The J.D. Program
Core Knowledge and Fundamental Skills

As a lawyer you will be a problem solver with acute analytical skills. Your courses here will help you acquire and refine these skills by combining theory and practice, proposition and synthesis, reflection and action. Our program teaches critical thinking and analysis, legal theory and perspectives, written and oral communication, and the skills, values, and ethics of lawyers-as well as the public policies underlying legal issues. Our program challenges our students to reach and grow intellectually and professionally. We pride ourselves on blending the best of classical legal education with leading-edge innovations. We are facing head-on some fundamental changes in the world and in the legal profession. The expansion and growing complexity of the law, the effects of globalization on virtually every segment of our economic, social, and political lives, and the quest for a fair and effective legal system have altered the responsibilities of lawyers and the skills and learning that our graduates need. Our goal is to ensure that our graduates will be prepared to understand their clients' enterprises and the economic, social, and political context in which they operate. The First-Year Curriculum
Over the past two years we have implemented important changes in our first-year curriculum as well. The primary focus is on required courses that provide the essential foundation for the upper-level curriculum. In addition, however, we have begun a process of reconfiguring our array of first-year electives (each first-year student chooses an elective in the spring semester) to correspond to our Concentrations so that students can begin to focus on an area of particular interest to them. We have also implemented a new series of lectures for first-year students, at which guest speakers address issues of professionalism, emerging trends in the law and practice, and broad issues that cut across the boundaries of the traditional courses.

Search engines often find many sites, and there's no way of knowing which of the sites you need without testing them. To be sure that your own Web site appears in searches, you should register it with the major search enginges. Most allow you to do that. But beware, registering with search engines usually means you'll be getting more junk email since it makes you visible to spammers. In the past few years, the major search engines transmogrified into portals that pre-select the hits displayed for the more common searches. The portals say they save us time by screening and rejecting large numbers of irrelevant sites. Maybe so. Sometimes the portals' search results are right on the money; sometimes you need to make broader searches with a less selective search engine. Note that, in August 1999, studies reported that only a small percentage of the Web was actually being indexed by search engines (another reason to register with them). Even AltaVista, which once searched the entire Internet, was found to index only 15%. Some search engines have improved greatly since then, but caveat emptor is still the word of the day, especially since many portals and search engines sell positions in their searches.

Page 1 o f 5 Step 1 : The Idea and Start-up Plans
This is the most important step of all! Without a good concept, a good product, good services or good content, anything else you do is a waste of time. So what should you look for here? If you already have a business off the Internet (in the "real world"), this is the logical place to start. However, we do not recommend that you stop there. So many businesses launching websites view the Internet as just another place they need to advertise. Their websites tend to be little more than what are known in cyberspace as "Brochure Websites." They simply replicate print advertisements and brochures. While these sites are not totally worthless, they fail to take advantage of the unparalleled opportunities afforded by the new technologies online. The Internet is fast becoming the busiest business district the world has ever known. However, having a web site should be more than reproducing existing advertising. It should mean taking full advantage of the Internet's capability of interactive shopping and globally convenient access. Your web site can be the perfect showcase for people to obtain information about your company and products, an efficient way of communicating with your present clients, potential customers and an international marketplace to sell your products and services.

Free Software Matters:
When Code Isn't Law
Eben Moglen
April 23, 2000 Most of my time is spent writing and teaching about law for the Internet society, or proposing and helping to implement legal strategy for the free software movement. As a Linux user, you know that free software, because of the way it's made, achieves levels of quality that proprietary software rarely meets, and delivers reliable cutting-edge technology at a price every individual user and small business can afford. But from where I sit, free software is also central to the biggest legal and political issues that the global Internet society will face in the next twenty-five years. We often discuss ``the Internet'' as though it were either a thing or a place, but we do better at grasping the legal and political issues the net presents if we think of ``the Internet'' as the name of a social condition: the fact that everyone living in the networked portions of the world can now communicate with anyone else directly, without intermediaries, reaching very large numbers of people at almost no cost. A society in which everyone is connected to everyone else behaves differently from any society that has ever existed before; past ``principles'' of social and economic law, things that seemed always true everywhere, aren't anymore. Free softwarelike the Linux kernel, GNU Emacs, LaTeX, Apache, Perl, and all the other tools you use all the timeexists because in this pervasively interconnected society, non-traditional means of production can be amazingly efficient. Large numbers of programmers can collaborate easily on enormous projects without having to be locked into a hierarchical organization. Everyone can participate in finding and fixing bugs and everyone can readily incorporate all the fixes, so the quality of free software can be much higher than that of programs produced by a limited number of developers and testers inside a commercial proprietary manufacturer.

Administration of Relationships with Primary Dealers January 22, 1992 The Federal Reserve Bank of New York (FRBNY) is adopting certain changes in the administration of its relationship with primary dealers in U.S. Government securities. The primary dealer system has been developed for the purpose of selecting trading counterparties for the Federal Reserve in its execution of market operations to carry out U.S. monetary policy. The designation of primary dealers has also involved the selection of firms for statistical reporting purposes in compiling data on activity in the U.S. Government securities market. These changes in the administration of these relationships have been developed after consultation with the Federal Reserve Board, the Federal Open Market Committee, the Treasury and the Securities and Exchange Commission. The changes announced today have been prompted by two related factors:
First Second , and more important, while the system of designating primary dealers on the whole has served the Federal Reserve, the Treasury, and the nation well for many years, there also have been some drawbacks to the existing arrangements. Prominent among these is the public impression that, because of the Federal Reserve Bank's standards for selecting and maintaining these relationships, the Fed is in effect the regulator of the primary dealer firms. Moreover the primary dealer designation has been viewed as conferring a special status on these firms that carries with it elements of "franchise value" for the dealer operation and possibly for other aspects of the firm's standing in the marketplace.
