Pennsylvania, FBI share crime data
By Jason Miller
GCN Staff
When the call came for cooperation among government law enforcement officials after Sept. 11 and the anthrax strikes, some state and local agencies were ready to take part immediately. A few weeks later, Pennsylvania State Police used JNet to help the FBI track down another suspected terrorist who was already in a state prison. JNet was designed to help state law enforcement agencies share information but also can be valuable to federal investigators. JNet shows all information no matter how it is formatted in HTML through a Web browser. Built to adapt JNet also uses a public-key infrastructure developed by VeriSign Inc. of Mountain View, Calif., that lets agencies use digital certificates to access information and send secure messages. Cooperation between the state police and the FBI is not uncommon. Federal officials regularly use JNet to track suspects. The FBI used the system to catch a burglary suspect in Boston and another terrorist suspect in New York. Home About GCN Contact GCN Customer Help ... Advertise

Enforcement The enforcement of regulations on food standards is primarily the responsibility of local authorities. Learn about food law, food hazard warnings, who to contact with complaints or concerns about food safety, and the FSA's role in protecting the consumer. Who is responsible for enforcement? Responsibility for enforcement is shared between central and local government bodies. While the making of legislation in the UK is the function of central government, the enforcement of food law is primarily (but not solely) the responsibility of the 499 local authorities in the UK, and more specifically Environmental Health Officers (EHOs) and Trading Standards Officers (TSOs). The FSA is also an enforcement authority in its own right. Central government role Where food law enforcement does not rest with local authorities, it is carried out by central Government or its enforcement agencies. The Food Standards Agency (acting through its executive agency the Meat Hygiene Service in England, Scotland and Wales, and through the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Veterinary Service in Northern Ireland) is the enforcement authority in respect of around 1700 licensed premises in the UK producing meat for sale for human consumption. Such premises include Slaughterhouses, Cutting Plants and Cold Stores. Inspection of the meat industry is essential to protect public health and promote consumer confidence. For more information about the Meat hygiene Service see link below. Formal enforcement, ie prosecutions, investigations, etc. is the responsibility of the FSA itself.

Ptech Linked to al-Qaida?
Associated Press Page 1 of 1
03:03 PM Dec. 06, 2002 PT WASHINGTON A Massachusetts software company whose clients include the FBI, Air Force and Navy was searched by federal agents looking for links to a Saudi businessman who in turn is believed to be connected to al-Qaida, government officials said Friday. Agents from the Customs Service, FBI, Internal Revenue Service and other agencies, armed with a search warrant, went to the offices of Ptech late Thursday to look for information on Yasin al-Qadi. He is on the Treasury Department's list of Specially Designated Global Terrorists whose assets should be immediately frozen.

Al-Qadi, who is from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, heads the Saudi-based Muwafaq (Blessed Relief) Foundation, which Treasury officials allege is an al-Qaida front used to funnel millions of dollars to the terrorist organization. No arrests were made but agents did recover evidence from Ptech, which consented to the search. Officials declined to specify what was found. U.S. Attorney Michael J. Sullivan of Boston said the search involved "an ongoing financial crime investigation" but said an affidavit supporting the warrant was sealed by court order.

Geography Matters to Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice
Geography plays an important role in law enforcement and criminal justice. Response capabilities often rely on a variety of data from multiple agencies and multiple sources. The ability to access and process information quickly while displaying it in a spatial and visual medium allows agencies to allocate resources quickly and more effectively. In the "mission-critical" nature of law enforcement, information about the location of a crime, incident, suspect, or victim is often crucial to determine the manner and size of the response. Police and Sheriffs Corrections Parole and Probation Criminal Justice
Geographic Information System
GIS software uses geography and computer-generated maps as an interface for integrating and accessing massive amounts of location-based information. GIS allows law enforcement and criminal justice personnel to plan effectively for emergency response, determine mitigation priorities, analyze historical events, and predict future events. GIS can also be used to get critical information to emergency responders upon dispatch or while en route to an incident to assist in tactical planning and response.
