Latin language It is very hard to write a short description of Latin, because of the huge massive of history and information about it. But in short the facts are the following: Latino-Faliscan subgroup of Italic languages occupied lands on the left bank of the Tiber river in the 10th or 9th century BC. At this time Latinians did not know writing yet, and were under the influence of Etruscans. Only in the late 8th century Greek alphabet was modified to make the Latin one, and since then the historical development of Latin began. The earliest inscription found in Latin shows the archaic stage of the language similar to Oscan and Venetic languages. At this time, when Rome was found, Latin already had its structure with all complex verb forms and noun declension. The Classical Latin language took birth in the 6th century BC and gradually disappeared in the 4th and 5th century AD, becoming Popular Latin . In this period of time, Latin was flourishing and spreading all over Europe, was spoken in Asia and northern Africa. It assimilated other Italic languages, other Indo-European and non-Indo-European languages of Italy, France, Alps, Thracia, Illyria, many other ancient tongues. The list of languages Latin caused to disappear is very long. But it all was leaving deep traces in Latin itself. And in the new era the language of Romans began to suffer much simplification, changes and mutations, being restructured in Popular Latin. And as the Classical language remained as an official tongue of medieval Europe, Latin as a living language became extinct, used only in Pope's office in Vatican even now.

Roman conquests later spread Latin throughout Italy and the vast Roman Empire. Numerous documents, such as Latin inscriptions and literary works, furnish much information about the language, as do the comments of ancient scholars and various related dialects and languages. After the ancient Romans began to develop a literature (in the 3d cent. B.C. ), a gap emerged between literary, or classical, Latin and Vulgar Latin, which was the popular (spoken) form of the language. This division had become considerable by the beginning of the Roman Empire. It is especially from Vulgar Latin, carried by the soldiers and colonists of Rome throughout the Roman Empire, that the modern Romance languages are descended. Sections in this article:

Bilingualism and the Latin Language
J. N. Adams
In stock Since the 1980s, bilingualism has become one of the main themes of sociolinguistics - but there are as yet few large-scale treatments of the subject specific to the ancient world. This book is the first work to deal systematically with bilingualism during a period of antiquity (the Roman period, down to about the fourth century AD) in the light of sociolinguistic discussions of bilingual issues. The general theme of the work is the nature of the contact between Latin and numerous other languages spoken in the Roman world. Among the many issues discussed three are prominent: code-switching (the practice of switching between two languages in the course of a single utterance) and its motivation, language contact as a cause of change in one or both of the languages in contact, and the part played by language choice and language switching in the establishment of personal and group identities.

Latin Language and Latin Culture
From Ancient to Modern Times
Joseph Farrell
Hardback In stock The Latin language is popularly imagined in a number of specific ways: as a masculine language, an imperial language, a classical language, a dead language. This book considers the sources of these metaphors and analyses their effect on how Latin literature is read. It argues that these metaphors have become idées fixes not only in the popular imagination but in the formation of Latin studies as a professional discipline. By reading with and more commonly against these metaphors, the book offers a different view of Latin as a language and as a vehicle for cultural practice. The argument ranges over a variety of texts in Latin and texts about Latin produced by many different sorts of writers from antiquity to the twentieth century.

Proposal for a volume to appear in the series
ÒRoman Literature and its ContextsÓ
Working title: ÒLatin Language and Latin CultureÓ
Joseph Farrell
, University of Pennsylvania
Introduction
The subject of the book is the Latin language as a context for literature. By this I do not mean the linguistic or aesthetic properties of the language so much as the characteristics that have been and are imputed to it as a cultural artifact in its own right (e.g. that it is a ÒlearnedÓ language, that it is difficult to acquire and use properly, that it is nevertheless not so ÒrichÓ a language as, especially, Greek, that is seen alternately as a pagan and as an ecclesiastical language, that it has generally been taken to be the province of men, not of women, etc.). My intent is to explore the ways in which the tendency of readers to impute these qualities to the language affects their understanding of Latin literature. This proposal consists of a complete preliminary draft of Chapter 1 , tentatively entitled ÒThe Nature of Latin CultureÓ , and a short outline of the rest of the book as I currently envision it . (Of the subsequent chapters a quantity of text perhaps equivalent to the first chapter already exists, but it is in rather rough condition, not yet ready to be seen.) Chapter 1 is intended both to suggest the range of topics I will address in the book and to give an idea of my working method. I stress the continuity of Latin culture from antiquity down to the present day, though not in the way this is usually done. The argument develops through alternate passages of rather large-scale cultural critique and close readings of various texts of all sorts from different periods.

Beside improving your use of English, Latin opens to you a culture which is both reassuringly familiar and formidably alien today. The study of Latin at UCT endeavours to set the lanugage in the context of the whole of Roman culture - against the background of its literature, art, philosophies, political structures and legal system. The understanding we gain of the Roman heritage helps us understand our own age and society. For prospective Law students it is particularly fascinating to see how Roman law has enjoyed a 'second life' as the basis of some European legal systems and our own here in South Africa. There are two ways to start Latin at UCT:
i) for those who have no knowledge of Latin or a smattering from school
ii) for those who have Matric Latin (Grade C or above)
If you have Matric Latin you will enter at second year level, Latin IIA.

They took 12 Black Sabbath classics and turned them into something totally unheard. You don’t have to take history lessons to get the feeling. What the Church says on the Latin Language Pope Pius XI, Officiorum Omnium "For the Church, precisely because it embraces all nations and is destined to endure until the end of time... of its very nature requires a language which is universal, immutable, and non-vernacular." Pope Pius XII, Mediator Dei "The use of the Latin language prevailing in a great part of the Church affords at once an imposing sign of unity and an effective safeguard against the corruption of true doctrine." Pope John XXIII, Veterum Sapientia "The Catholic Church has a dignity far surpassing that of every merely human society, for it was founded by Christ the Lord. It is altogether fitting, therefore, that the language it uses should be noble, majestic and non-vernacular." Second Vatican Council, Sacrosanctum Concilium #36 "The use of Latin, with due respect to particular law, is to be preserved in the Latin Rites." #54 "Nevertheless care must be taken to ensure that the faithful may also be able to say or sing together in Latin those parts of the Ordinary of the Mass which pertain to them."
