Risk Management . . . por favor!
(Risk Management in Latin America)
by Stavros Costarangos What is happening in Latin America? Everything! From globalization, automation, deregulation, and competition to privatization. Risk and insurance do not escape this reality and changes are being felt in the market. Risk management as a discipline and management process is not well known throughout the region but there is a growing need for these issues to be discussed and researched. Little by little those involved in the process of buying insurance for corporations are adding the risk management ingredient to their performance. Although there are not many full time "risk managers" in Latin America, other corporate officials are fullfilling the risk managers duties in a partial manner. Such is the case with those in charge of Industrial Safety & Engineering, Comptrollers, Finance Directors, General Managers, etc.

    development of immigrant communities,
    preserve Latin American culture, establish solidarity with Latin American peoples
Protecting Immigrant Rights Since 1984 The Latin America Action Program (LAAP) has worked to protect the rights of thousands of Latin American immigrants living in Greater Boston. In 1990, a discrimination suit settled between the American Baptist Church (ABC) and the United States government granted temporary protection to immigrants from El Salvador and Guatemala. Now, under new rules they must apply for political asylum. To assist ABC class members in their application processes, LAAP has trained paralegals to help them understand the political asylum application and suspension of deportation processes and to prepare their legal cases.

Annual Report, 2002
The 2001 2002 goals for the CAMWS Committee for the Promotion of Latin were very ambitious: 1.) identifying Latin programs in each state and anticipating openings; 2.) developing contacts between CAMWS members and state foreign language coordinators; 3.) creating a list of expert high school teachers willing to speak to college students about careers in high school Latin teaching, sponsoring such events, putting testimonials on the CPL website; 4.) identifying the Latin teacher programs and their coordinators in CAMWS territory and obtaining statistical information about their graduates; and 5.) developing and distributing information about Latin to high school administrators and counselors. This information has been posted on the following webpages: http://department.monm.edu/classics/CPL/SupervisorsofForLangList.htm (for state foreign language coordinators); http://department.monm.edu/classics/CPL/master_latin_teacher_list.htm (for expert high school teachers);

In the 20th century, rice ( Oryza sativa ) has gradually become the most important food grain in Latin America and the Caribbean, supplying consumers with more calories than staples such as wheat, maize, cassava, and potatoes. It is surpassed only by sugar as a source of energy in the diet.

The Importance of Rice
The displacement by rice of traditional staples, such as cassava and plantains, which are bulkier and more perishable, has its roots in rapid urbanization throughout the region. Because of its convenience, rice has found sizable markets in recent decades in the cities, where nearly three-quarters of all Latin Americans currently reside. Rice has many other dietary virtues as well, being rich in vitamins and minerals, low in fat and salt, and free of cholesterol. Rice is a versatile crop, with varieties adapted to a wide range of climates, soils, and moisture conditions. In Latin America about 55 percent of the crop (3.7 million hectares) is concentrated in wetlands, and roughly two-thirds of that area is irrigated. The other 45 percent (3.0 million hectares), referred to as "upland" rice, is grown under rainfed conditions.

International Economics The Latin world is a challenging region in which to do business, but it offers many rewards. In this chapter from the book "Winning Strategies for the New Latin Markets," the authors provide recommendations on how firms may continue to operate in the powerful yet volatile Latin markets. Other articles by Jerry Haar Other articles by Fernando Robles Other articles by Francoise Simon Advertise With Us The last decade of the twentieth century was a time of profound economic transformation in Latin America. We began this book with an identification of key drivers of such transformation: global financial systems, regulatory reforms, regional integration, market transformation, and technology (see Figure 1.1). With different levels of intensity and at different times, these drivers have had a profound impact on all Latin American countries, without exception. The impact has transformed industry and business strategy. In Chapters 3 to 7, we analyzed the impact of these drivers on the infrastructure, consumer markets, banking, and health sectors. In this chapter we revisit our initial framework, assess the strategy of adapters and shapers introduced in Chapter 1, and provide recommendations on how firms may continue to operate in Latin markets.

    español click the image to enter The project’s intent is to support the strengthening and expansion of democracies in Latin America. The debate within Latin America concerning its own democratic experience has been fragmented and often limited to very restricted circles. The vast majority of Latin Americans, including even groups of its leaders, are unaware of the degree to which their dilemmas are not exclusively limited to their own countries but are at least partially shared by other countries in the region. To reach these goals the project’s task is not merely academic. If indeed theoretical and systematic thought is required to ground the analysis and knowledge concerning regional realities, so too is the practical experience of actors and the perceptions of Latin Americans themselves concerning their social experience in democracy. This effort focuses in on the examination of the issues touching on the governability of these democracies, on the description of their current situation, on the identification and in-depth discussion of their most severe challenges, and—as a result of these tasks—on the laying out of the criteria which might lift up the political options in the region. The first report on Democratic Development in Latin America will be published in the second trimester of 2003, and for its elaboration will rely on three basic sources of analysis and information: 1) the academic analyses written by the project team together with renowned academics from within and without the region; 2) in depth interviews with political, social, and economic actors; and 3) a quantitative data base resulting from the analysis of comparative indicators on democratic governability together with an opinion poll carried out in 17 countries of the region.
