Latin Americans and Caribbeans know little about blood donation, study shows Washington, DC, August 8, 2002 (PAHO) Many people in Latin America and the Caribbean know little about blood donation and have difficulty accessing blood services, according to a study in 15 countries sponsored by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). The study demonstrated that Latin American and Caribbean citizens have little information on how donated blood is obtained, processed and utilized. Furthermore, it is difficult for them to gain access to these services and blood bank hours pose obstacles. The findings also confirmed that many myths about blood donation are prevalent, including the mistaken idea that donating blood will cause people to gain weight, lose weight, or induce disease. PAHO, which launched a Regional Blood Safety Initiative in 2001 to achieve sufficient safe blood in the Region, developed guidelines to explore the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of the population of Latin America and the Caribbean regarding blood donation. With the support of experts and in consultation with health authorities of each country, personnel were trained to carry out the surveys. The survey's main result was that there is a need to educate people to eliminate false beliefs and to give precise information on blood and blood donation.

According to the Merriam Webster dictionary, honesty implies a refusal to lie, steal, or deceive in any way. Integrity implies trustworthiness and incorruptibility to a degree that one is incapable of being false to a trust, responsibility, or pledge. Probity is defined as adherence to the highest principles and ideals, and implies tried and proven honesty or integrity.

Welcome to the Probity or Probidad (in Spanish) web site. Probidad or Probity, in English, aims to contribute to the reduction of poverty and other inequities and injustices, to increased social and political development, and to democratization processes and peace efforts by combating corruption in Latin America. Probidad works towards these goals vis-à-vis diverse and integrated anti-corruption initiatives, most which rely on the use of information and communication technologies and an extensive network of contacts. Almost 20,000, mostly Latin Americans, subscribe to one of Probidad's listservs and its web sitesreceive betwen 60,000 and 80,000 monthly visitors. Probidad's activities are designed to monitor corruption and control mechanisms; mobilize awareness about the complexities and costs of corruption and increased interest and participation in curbing it; enhance the anti-corruption capacity of other civil society organizations, media, government, business, and researchers in our region; and contribute to more informed local and context-specific measures that undermine corruption and promote good governance. Probidad also monitors, defends and advocates on behalf of access to information, free expression and other conditions important to the watchdog role of the press.

    INDUSTRY ANALYSIS
Mining for Revenue in the Latin American Telecommunications Boom
Newcomers to the Latin American ICT market can't help but be impressed with the sheer growth of both the infrastructure and the subscriber base. Some sales directors get starry-eyed, thinking that consumer and business purchasing power have driven this impressive rollout. Others recognize the lower spending power of Latin Americans, but still assume that their propensity to consume ICT products stands at developed country levels. As this article points out, however, annual per capita spending on ICT products and services in the region is less than 6% of the level in the United States. Nonetheless, telecommunications networks will continue to be rolled out, and millions of Latin Americans will become regular telephone and Internet users for the first time.
