Laos China Japan Thailand ... Map of Laos, courtesy Britanica.com Laos is a landlocked country which is surrounded by Cambodia to the south, Thailand and Myanmar to the west, China to the north and Vietnam to the east. Laos covers an area of 236,800 sq.km ( 91,400 sq.miles)with rivers and mountains dominating most of the landscape. (Library of Congress: Laos A country study). The Mekong ("Mae Nam Kong" - Mother of Waters-) runs through Laos and in the south, can measure up to 14 kms wide during the rainy season (near Si Phan Don). It runs through more of Laos than any other South East Asian country. (Lonely Planet, 1997, P. 23) The Mekong is used by the Lao for transportation of goods and people and also for fishing. The country's main agricultural land is in the Mekong river valley. The two main agricultural centers are around the two most populated cities which are Vientiane, and Savanakhet in the south (Lonely Planet, 1997, p. 24). A very important source of revenue for Laos comes from the electricity it sells to Thailand. This electricity is generated by the Nam Ngum dam and its hydroelectric plant, 90 kilometers northeast from Vientiane (Let's Go Southeast Asia, 1998, p. 328). Laos is mostly made up of plateaus and mountains which cover 70% of the country. (Let's Go Southeast Asia, 1998, P. 312). The Annamite chain runs through about half of Laos and is characterized by its majestic peaks which dot much of northern Laos. Phu Bia is 2820 meters high and the highest peak in Laos. In Xieng Khouang province one finds the largest mountain plateau and the famous Plain of Jars which is littered with huge prehistoric stone jars of unknown origin. In the south, at the end of the chain, is the famous Bolovens Plateau. This plateau covers about 10,000 sq kms and is where a lot of the mountain rice, coffee and tea are produced (Lonely Planet, 1997, P. 24)

The mighty Mekong in the west and the Annamite Mountains in the east offer natural borders to Thailand and Vietnam respectively, while Laos also shares borders with China in the north, Myanmar in the northwest and Cambodia in the south. With over half of this landlocked country's 236,800sq. km densely forested, and 70% of it mountainous, it is hardly surprising that a profusion of rare flora and over 1,200 species of wildlife finds a home beneath its tropical canopy. The country's highest peak, at 2,820m, can be found in the mountainous ranges of northeastern Laos, in the province Xiang Khouang, However, nearly equally as impressive are the mountains at the southern end of the Annamite range which reach heights of 2,600m. The Khammouanne and Bolaven plateaus dominate the central region of the Annamites. Almost all of the rivers and streams in Laos eventually end up feeding into the Mekong through one of its 15 tributaries, making a total of 2,400km of waterways and feeding the Mekong with more than half of its overall water flow. Though averaging rainfalls of between 1360mm, in Luang Prabang, to 3700mm on the Boloven Plateau during the June to October monsoon season, Laos regularly suffers from water shortages in the low-lying Mekong Delta plains. This can adversely effect the rice crops that account for almost 80% of the country's agricultural land.

It has been uneasy access to international trade over the centuries, but it was heavily suffer specially during the Vietnam War as result of its location and unsettle of its own revolution. On other hand, Laos today with its location at the heart of Southeast Asia has provided opportunity to capitalize on its strategic location for major trading routes in the region. There is more of the great location, especially lot of mountains and major parts of the country is covered with forest which provides best for hydroelectric dams, estimated to be more than 46 dams can be built and presently there are more than 20 dams in the planning stages throughout the country. With all such projects being planned and it is believed that Laos may become an energy source for the region once these projects are finished. The great Mekong, the twelfth longest river in the world, flows through the country that provides fertile valley for agriculture, with the fish that-along with rice - is a main diet of Lao. The terrain in the north is marked steep, jagged mountain slopes, while in the south profit from the fertile plains such as the Pakson Bolaven Plateau where most of famous coffee is grown.

    Geography Laos
is a landlocked country in the center of Indochina. It shares borders with China and Burma to the north, Cambodia to the south, Thailand to the west and Vietname to the east. Approximately 70% of its total area (236,800 square kilometers) comprises of mountain and plateaux areas. Mekong river (one of the longest rivers in the world) forms a natural border with Thailand. It flows through almost 1,900 kilometers of the territory of Laos. Population It was estimated that, in 1999, the population of Laos was 4.8 million. Around 85% of the population are farmers and live in rural areas. There are 3 main ethnic categories: Lao Loum (low landers), Lao Thueng (lower mountain dwellers), and Lao Soong (high landers). The great majority of Lao are Buddhist.
Climate Laos has a warm and tropical climate with two seasons: the rainy season from the beginning of May to the end of September and the dry season from October to April. The average temperature 29 degree centigrade. Maximum temperature can reach up to 40 degree centigrade. Temperatures can drop to as low as 15 degrees or even lower in mountains. Generally, tourists are recommended to visit Laos during the months of November to March because these are cool months and rainfall is lower than other periods.
