Travel Overview Geography and landmarks in Laos Laos is girdled by Vietnam Thailand Cambodia China and Burma Rivers and mountains dominate the country's topography. The Mekong River , which is the country's largest, runs the entire length of the country, providing fertile flood plains for agriculture and forming the country's border with Thailand. It is also Laos' main transportation throughway. Over 70% of the country contains mountains and plateaus. Bordering Vietnam, the Annamite Chain runs parallel to the Mekong for half the length of the country. The rough mountains average between 1500-3000 meters in height, and at their southern extremity open up to form the Bolaven Plateau , a 10,000 square kilometer large area that produces mountain rice, coffee, tea and other high-altitude crops. The highest mountain is Phu Bia (2819 meters) in northern Laos. Two-thirds of Laos is forested and only 10% of the country is considered suitable for agriculture. Given the topography, it is fortunate that Laos has one of the lowest population densities in Asia - around 18 people per square kilometer. Most of the population is settled along fertile river valleys, although there are many small tribes living in the hills. The largest population centers, Vientiane and Savannakhet , are both in the Mekong River Valley; 85% of the population lives in rural areas.

Generally speaking, the monsoon season produces severe rain that lasts for short periods of time. The wet months vary according to location, in Vientiane, they are from May to September, in Luang Prabang, August is far wetter than any other month.

Vientiane's major attractions are its serene Buddhist monasteries and significant monuments that dominate the scene on the streets of central Vientiane. Luang Prabang Vientiane In 1563, King Setthathirat made Vientiane, the capital of the kingdom of Lane Xang (The Land of a Million Elephants). The two most important Wats of Vientiane, Wat That Luang and Wat Phra Kaeo date back to that time. In 1827 Vientiane had been conquered and sacked by a Siamese army. For decades the town lay in ruins, until the French, at the beginning of their colonial reign rebuilt it. However, Vientiane today does not feature French-influenced architecture to the same extent as Phnom Penh and Saigon but instead shows a strong Thai influence. The capital city and seat of government sits on a bend in the Mekong River amidst fertile alluvial plains. It supports a population of 464,000 with an area of 180 sq. km.
