50. Code Languages-- Index

http://www.lamc.utexas.edu/hebrew/personal/language/codes/
Code Languages
This activity is mainly intended for fun. While discussing secret languages and street languages, students become familiar with syllable structure, consonants and vowels, and with general issues associated with the development of slang and languages used for special purposes.
Handout 1 introduces a set of statements from well-known movies in Pig Latin. Students are asked to identify the language and decipher the statements.
Handout 2 does the same thing in Eggy Peggy.
Handouts 3-6 deal with Verlan, a French dialect developed in the suburbs of Paris in the early 1980's as a new street language, and spoken today among teenagers across France. They are much more challenging than the first two, and the answers to the problems are given on the bottom of the page in case students cannot figure them out. A good strategy would be to fold the page and hide the answers, and use them only as a last resort. The Verlan handouts can be used as a separate activity.

Background information
On the initiative of Professor Stephen Wurm I was asked to compile the European section of the Unesco Red Book Report on Endangered Languages with a couple of weeks' notice in December, 1993. The full version of that preliminary report is now available. It is, however, easier to study it with the help of the indexes. Demographic data for Finno-Ugrian languages appear as a separate table Languages were originally divided into five categories; a sixth, potentially endangered languages, was added later:

The Random Programming Languages List
Preface
Have you ever programmed something just for fun? Written a program just for the challenge of writing it? Have you ever wondered whether there are languages that are more fun than C? Have you ever wondered what life would be like without our nifty tools? If so, this is the page for you. It might be the page for you even if you didn't answer yes, but it is definitely the page for you if you did. This is the Random Programming Languages list. Here are all those languages that are fun to program in, but not really meant for serious work. So far as I know, all of them are toy languages, and many are purely interpreted. So welcome, share and enjoy, maybe even learn something... I have attempted to say when the interpreter/compiler for a language was not written in C. Or when the source is not available. (Mumble, mumble.) bem@mad.scientist.com Updated Mon 10 Jul 2000: updated TRUE, fixed webring link, cleaned several entries
Updated Thu 01 Jun 2000: updated BrainF*** entry.

ARTFL Project
The University of Chicago's Project for American and French Research on the Treasury of the French Language (whew...no wonder they use an acronym!) was created as a database of words from written French. It now contains over 150 million words ranging from the 17th to the 20th centuries. A great tool for French scholars and researchers, as well as lovers of language.
Association des Bibliophiles Universels
An extensive collection of public domain French literature, in French.
Bienvenidos Bienvenus Welcome
Put together by a Spanish teacher, this is an impressive group of foreign language links. There are French, German, and Spanish collections, including newspaper and magazine links in all three languages. There's also a chat section, and one for homework help.

Chinese Character Genealogy
This is "An Etymological Chinese-English Dictionary" which would be very useful to students of Chinese. The point and click translation method and excellent use of frames make the site a pleasure to visit, and the background information is interesting even if you're not studying Chinese.
