HOME BUILDERS PARTNER WITH U.S. LABOR DEPARTMENT TO ENSURE A POSITIVE WORK EXPERIENCE FOR YOUTH
WASHINGTON, June 19-The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and its workforce development arm, the Home Builders Institute (HBI), today emphasized the housing industry's commitment to student employment and safety by partnering in the U.S. Department of Labor's new YouthRules! program. Unveiled today by Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao, the program aims to educate young workers, parents, and employers about the resources and protections that exist to ensure teens have a positive work experience. "The nation's home builders applaud Secretary Chao for her commitment to youth employment and safety through the creation of the YouthRules! initiative," said Gary Garczynski, NAHB President and a builder/developer from Woodbridge, Va. "We are pleased to partner in this worthwhile endeavor with the Labor Department. While nothing is more important than keeping our kids safe, a positive jobsite experience when you are young can easily lead to a career choice in the home building industry, and that is something we want to encourage." In accordance with the legal statute prohibiting minors from performing certain hazardous tasks, the home building industry does not, as a rule, hire people under 18 to work on construction sites. However, adhering to DOL regulations, NAHB's Home Builders Institute does allow 16-18 year-olds to participate in most construction-related activities if they are enrolled in a registered apprenticeship program or engaging in a student-learning experience as part of a recognized vocational training program. NAHB and HBI are committed to ensuring the safety of participants in these programs and to helping NAHB's 205,000 members comply with federal workplace safety rules.

RELATED LINKS Federal OSHA Related Safety Links For nearly 30 years, Vermont's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (VOSHA) has labored diligently to protect the health and safety of working Vermonters. Operating in concert with business and industry, VOSHA has greatly reduced the number of work-related injuries and fatalities occurring in Vermont. As a result, fewer families have suffered the premature loss of a loved one, fewer productive work days have been lost due to preventable injuries, and a large number of employers have avoided costly and unnecessary lawsuits. We, in Vermont, can be proud of our state's accomplishments on behalf of its workforce. A safe and healthful workplace is important to the financial well being of a company. Employees are more productive and happier when the risk of injury or illness is reduced. A first line defense against rising Workers' Compensation costs is to reduce or eliminate the injuries in your workplace. VOSHA wants to work with employers and employees to reduce workplace injuries and illnesses.
