Mission of the Division to prevent occupational injuries, illnesses and fatalities in the state. Its means of action enforcement, consultation, hazard evaluation, licensing of dangerous work, standards setting. The Division also has nonsafety-related duties related to employment agencies and wages.
http://www.state.ma.us/dos/
Minimum Wage Opinion Letters FEE SCHEDULE The Division of Occupational Safety administers several workplace safety and health programs, all focused on the goal of having every worker return home safe and healthy each day. Also, part of our mission is the effective administration and enforcement of the employment agency laws in Massachusetts; the issuance of prevailing wage schedules for many public works projects; the promulgation and interpretation of the state's minimum wage regulations; and the issuance of minimum wage, seasonal business overtime, and uniform deposit waivers. In doing so, we employ several approaches:
  • We enforce certain laws, such as in the areas of lead paint and asbestos abatement, for the protection of workers, the general public and the environment. We provide consultation services to employers who seek compliance assistance with safety and health laws. We perform laboratory analysis of potentially toxic substances found in the workplace such as organic solvents, metal dust, fumes, water and soil. We issue licenses to employment agencies that provide temporary and permanent employment services.

A Message from the Secretary of Labor
Every year, millions of teens work in part-time or summer jobs. Early work experiences can be rewarding for young workers – providing great opportunities for teens to learn important work skills. Today’s youth will be the workforce of the 21 st Century. One of my priorities for the U.S. Department of Labor is to assist America’s youth in preparing to enter that workforce. Through the new YouthRules! initiative, the U.S. Department of Labor and its strategic partners seek to promote positive and safe work experiences for young workers. The YouthRules! web page and activities will educate teens, parents, educators, employers and the public on Federal and State rules regarding young workers – the hours youth can work, the jobs youth can do. U.S. LABOR DEPARTMENT AND EEOC AGREE TO BOOST ENFORCEMENT OF PAY DISCRIMINATION LAWS
WASHINGTON The U.S. Department of Labor and the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission have approved two Memoranda of Understanding that will enable them to better enforce the laws prohibiting discrimination in the workplace, particularly laws that prohibit discrimination in compensation. The memoranda establish better coordination and communication between the two agencies and provide for training to increase staff awareness of potential compensation discrimination cases. These efforts will increase both the efficiency and effectiveness of investigations by both organizations. "Our economy is the strongest it has been in a generation and yet a pay gap still exists between men and women," said Secretary of Labor Alexis M. Herman. "A woman earns only 75 cents for every dollar that a man earns. For minority women it's worse. African American women earn just 65 cents and Hispanic women earn 55 cents for each dollar that white men earn. The closer working relationship between our agencies will ensure equal pay, equal opportunity and equal dignity for working women."
