September - Shadows and Lights
Let children explore the kinds of shadows various objects make. Let them use blocks, umbrellas, and construction paper with holes to make shadows that are varied and interesting.
Go outside in the morning or in the afternoon on a sunny day and have children draw with chalk around their classmates shadows on the pavement. Do shadow plays. Use lamps, sunlight or mirrors to make shadows.
October - Leaves
Go on a leaf hike with the children. Ask them to pick up leaves as they go. Be sure to avoid leaves such as poison ivy, oak, and sumac. When they return to the classroom have them sort the leaves they collect into groups. Ask the children to tell you how they sorted the leaves. Then tape a leaf on the wall and let each child match it with a leaf from their collection. Make and display a class leaf collection or a leaf museum using as many different kinds of leaves as possible. Then let children make leaf prints using crayons or colored pencils.
November - Sounds and Musical Instruments
Collect or make musical instruments for the children to explore, such as a series of clay flower pot bells, pipe wind chimes, xylophone, sand blocks, and a wood block tambourine. Have children tell you whether the sound is high or low, loud or soft. Then ask children to match the sound their instrument makes to a tone on a pitch pipe. Create a rhythm sequence on the tambourine or sand blocks and have children imitate it on their instrument. Have children identify mystery instruments and sounds played by children hidden from view.

World Wide Web Edition (1997)
Tennessee's Four Components For Science Education and
And National Science Education Standards Based T he Science Activities Manual: K - 8 has been written to aid in the adaptation of the "Touch Science Concept" to the elementary/middle school classroom. Each terminal/content objective has been organized into a classroom connector which begins with a Set and ends with a Closure. Through the revisions that were made to the original Science Activities Manual: K - 8 as it was transformed into the World Wide Web Edition (1997) a significant content relationship was drawn with the National Science Education Standards . Specifically, the National Science Education Standards were used to define the selected content topics. In addition each classroom connector addresses one of Tennessee's Four Components for Science Education as identified in the and edtions of the state framework. T he Science Activities Manual: K-8 classroom connectors address content with an activity approach while incorporating the themes necessary to raise the activity to a higher cognition level. This emphasis on both the physical and mental aspects of teaching and learning science is best described as "touch science" or "hands-on science." The major motivation is to employ instructional strategies that bring the students physically and mentally into touch with the science they are studying. T he first edition of SAM was available for use in the fall of 1986 for kindergarten through fourth grade. Grades five and six were released in January of 1987.

Science Activities
Colors, Shapes, Rainbows, and Robins
This is a year-round preschool/kindergarten science curriculum. Monthly activities invite children to explore a variety of objects and phenomena in their world. Each activity focuses on developmentally appropriate concepts and simple science process skills. Most of the materials required are already present in the preschool or kindergarten classroom.
Changes
This activity is designed for the primary grades. Students will learn about the properties of objects and how they change over time. Each student will observe, predict, communicate, pattern, and classify their experiences through drawings and group and class discussions.
Rubberbandology
This activity is designed for upper elementary school. Students will explore the property of elasticity. During the activity, small groups of students observe, collect data, and develop relationships while stretching a rubber band at various lengths and at varying temperatures. After the activity, students graph data to help make accurate predictions and inferences about the elasticity of a rubber band. Students will communicate their ideas through short written summaries and group and class discussions
Peas and Particles
This is an activity in which children deal informally with estimation and numbers in ways that may be new to them. In addition to constructing the concepts of estimation or "educated guesses," students develop a repertoire of counting methods as they interact with their peers and the instructor
