Alternative Certification Many states have developed or are initiating programs that provide alternative routes to teacher certification, particularly for mid-career professionals. The goal of such programs is to draw a diversity of individuals with in-depth subject matter backgrounds into teaching careers. Requirements for an alternative teaching license vary by state. For an overseas position, it does not matter what state your license is from. Generally, applicants must hold a bachelors degree in the subject to be taught, achieve a passing score on state-required examinations, complete an intensive teacher preparation program, and possibly fulfill a supervised teaching internship. Specific information on which school systems are offering internships can be requested from the schools. After satisfactory completion of these requirements, the applicant will be issued a teaching credential.

Susan McCollum, of Baldwin, is a national board certified teacher who teaches in the Sante Fe Trail district. The education plan Gov. Bill Graves has proposed would provide incentives for teachers who become certified by a national board. Chris Ochsner/The Capital-Journal Certifying excellence As a part of his $100 million plan to boost funding for education, Gov. Bill Graves wants to give financial incentives to teachers who earn certification.
    By JIM McLEAN

The Capital-Journal Gov. Bill Graves is hoping that a $500,000 investment will get him a few more teachers like Susan McCollum. McCollum, a sixth grade teacher at Carbondale Elementary School, is one of 42 national board-certified teachers in the state. Simply put, that means she is one of the best in the business. It indicates that she knows how to reach children, ignite their imaginations and set them on a path of lifetime learning. "I needed something to stretch me," said McCollum, explaining why she decided to go through the yearlong certification process.
