Waseda University has, in Japan, a long tradition of being a pioneer in international activities in education and research. International programs offered by the University have traditionally centered, as in other universities in Japan, on exchanging students and scholars, and conducting joint research projects with overseas academic institutions. The University has long been seeking to further such international activities beyond the traditional exchange of scholars and students to a new dimension of international education and research.
The recent reform of the University Establishment Standards, enforced as a law, has made it possible for each Japanese university to develop a more flexible and unique curriculum suited its particular educational discipline. Reflecting upon the above, serious discussion has taken place throughout Waseda University specifically concerning how to incorporate transnational and hence interdisciplinary aspects into undergraduate education. Such an institutional effort also reflects the fact that the University envisages far beyond the ever globalizing society.
During the post-war period, international programs have not only quantitatively, but also qualitatively experienced drastic changes. One of such major changes is no doubt the diversification of expectations to the programs from students and institutions. That is, no longer satisfied with mere language training and intercultural experiences, students want to acquire specific knowledge and skills through the participation in research projects and internships of their fields of study, and institutions to try to implement various optional programs besides the core academic programs. Furthermore, through a thorough scrutiny of the background of changes in international education it has become apparent that conventional administrative system will no longer function and the reform of the administrative office system is requisite.

In response to the demands of our complex society and its rapid advances in education and research, the University of Tsukuba has functionally separated education and research ( About the University of Tsukuba: Organizations ). If you are interested in Open Courses, such as Extension Courses, Credited Auditors System, or Open Lecturers for High School Students, please refer to [About the University of Tsukuba: Open Courses].
The following web pages explain college clusters, colleges, specialized schools, master's programs, doctoral programs, interdisciplinary curriculum, cooperative graduate programs, daytime and evening graduate programs, and evening graduate programs.
College Clusters and Schools

The college clusters and schools are intended to educate undergraduate students. Each college cluster and school are based on a specialized field but is structured to cover a group of similar disciplines to promote further development from an educational viewpoint.
The first, second, and third clusters of colleges are primarily responsible for the education of the student. There are no colleges for Medicine, Health and Physical Education, or Art and Design since special abilities and qualifications are required in those respective fields. Instead, in those fields, the specialized schools are set up to conduct well-projected consistent education.
