Jamaica
The reefs of Jamaica are in poor shape due to over-fishing, fishing with explosives, coral harvesting, development, untreated sewage, and other human-caused problems. It is believed that the deterioration of the reefs is causing Jamaica's beaches, a precious tourism resource, to erode. Montego Bay Marine Park is considered severely threatened due to lack of management. Oil and other pollutants from the airport add to the damage caused by fish traps, spearfishing and collection of coral by tourists. The park is badly in need of management to save the remaining reef in this area.

Geographic Location Coordinates: 18 15 N, 77 30 W Jamaica, a member of the Greater Antilles, lies 150 kilometers south of Cuba and 160 kilometers west of Haiti. Jamaica is the largest of the West Indian islands. It has an area of 11,424 square kilometers, and is 243 kilometers long. Jamaica is a lush tropical island in the heart of the Caribbean.
The most striking physical feature of Jamaica is its mountainous nature. Nearly half the island is over 300m above sea level. The mountains of the island are located mostly on the interior and can be broken up into three main groups.
The first group situated in the eastern section is composed of the Blue Mountains. They are the highest mountains in Jamaica, reaching 2,250 meters and are about 75 kilometers long. The first group is also composed of the John Crow Mountains and are the most easterly mountains of the island, running form north-west to south-east in the parish of Portland, and divide the Rio Grande valley from the east coast of the island.

Geography
Jamaica, a tropical island in the heart of the Caribbean, has a diverse and unique geography. Jamaica is a 146 mile long island with 4411 square miles of lush island. More than half Jamaica is mountains above 1000 feet high, making it an island with a very rugged terrain. While the mountains are mostly on the interior, the coastlines are flat beaches that stretch for as long as the eye can see. The northwest is a pitted landscape due to the many sinkholes that settled on the limestone surface. There are over 120 rivers that flow from the interior to the coast. Jamaica is believed to have been formed from volcanoes billions of years ago. Originally Jamaica was a rough rugged land, but eventually the climate and soil changed to provide conditions very suitable for the lush flora that can be seen today. Most of the plants except for pineapple, and guava were brought over by humans or bird droppings. There are over 3000 varieties of flowers can be found, including 800 species found only in Jamaica. The animal life, however is much plainer. There are rats, and mongooses, which are used to hunt the rats. There is also something known as the coney, a relative of the rat. There are also bats, crocodiles, and frogs. Far more impressive is the variety of birds on the island. There are over 200 species, ranging from the Doctor bird, to the brightly colored parakeets, parrots and finches.
Since Jamaica has such lush plant and animal life, it figures that there is a lovely climate. There is an average of 77 inches of rain, mostly in October and May. This helps to the explain the many plant form that thrive there. The average temperature is 80 F, with a temperature below 50 F being considered frigid.

GEOGRAPHY

Jamaica is located in the middle off the Caribbean Sea and belongs to the Antilles together with more than 1000 other islands. It lies some 150 km south of Cuba and 160 km west of Haiti. The island measures 200 km from E to W and 65 km from N to S. The total surface is 7058 square km which is about one third of the surface of Belgium. Jamaica is crossed by a range of mountains reaching 2256 m at the Blue Mountain Peak in the E and descending towards the W, with a series of spurs and forested gullies running N and S. There are approximately 2,500,000 Jamaicans. 90 per cent of the islanders are from African origin but there are also Chinese, East Indians, Arabs and European minorities. They speak English and Jamaican Creole or Patwa. The climate is hot and sunny all year and is called a tropical marine climate. The average temperature is 26°C (Belgium 10 °C). The moist trade winds blow all the year from the east or north-east and brings rains to the island (average rainfall on the island is 190 - 380 cm/year, here in Belgium only 76 - 127 cm/year, still we are always complaining...). Due to the mountainous relief the NE will be wetter than the rest of the island. The wettest place on the island are the John Crow Mountains. These limestone mountains reaching nearly 1200 m get an annual average rainfall of an unbelievable 635 cm/year.
