Course goals The primary goals of this course are reinforcing and continuing to develop Italian listening, speaking, reading, writing and cultural knowledge about Italy and countries settled by Italians
IT 104 is a capstone course, intended to bring students to an ACTFL intermediate level (see the attached definitions ) by reviewing, expanding and pulling together students previous knowledge of Italian. Although there is a review of grammar, emphasis is placed on increasing listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. For that purpose, we will use selected readings, videos, film clips and Crescendo ! exercises.
The Loyola College Catalogue reads, The liberal arts foundation upon which Loyola was founded will forever remain the cornerstone of the Colleges curriculum. The programs of study emphasize the exercise of reason, intellectual curiosity and the power of communication... all students bring a shared foundation in the liberal arts to their specialized studies as a result of their work in the core program. The mission of the College is fulfilled only to the degree that it liberates students from self-absorption, parochial ideas, and unexamined beliefs, replacing these with concern and compassion for others, an appreciation of things past or unfamiliar, and a capacity for critical thought (2002-2003, page 6). The study of a modern foreign language in all its aspects is essential to these goals. As we complete the core program in Italian, we seek to synthesize knowledge acquired in earlier semesters and prepare those wishing to continue study of the language and culture to do so.
