The Freedom of Information Center U.S. Iraq history
Philadelphia Daily News
January 27, 2003. June 1979: Saddam Hussein, a leader of a coup that had seized power in Iraq 10 years earlier, officially becomes the nation’s leader. He launches war on neighboring Iran the next year. Dec. 20, 1983: Then-President Ronald Reagan dispatches a former defense secretary, Donald Rumsfeld, as a special envoy to Baghdad, where he is photographed shaking hands with Saddam. The U.S. sees Iraq as a possible buffer against Iran’s radical Islamic fundamentalism. 1988: George H.W. Bush is elected president, while the Iran-Iraq war finally ends. Aug. 2, 1990: Iraq invades and occupies oil-rich Kuwait, its neighbor. The United States and other allies vow to dislodge Saddam. March 3, 1991: U.S.-led Operation Desert Storm retakes Kuwait and routs the Iraqi army. Then- President Bush decides not to oust Saddam, fearing a power vacuum and uncertainty if he is dislodged. February 1992: A team working with deputy defense secretary Paul Wolfowitz drafts a policy to more aggressively use American military power around the globe, both to rout unfriendly regimes and to keep potential rivals in check. The plan is rejected after public outcry. Later that year, Bush is defeated for re-election by Bill Clinton. June 3, 1997: A new conservative policy group with close ties to a number of former members of the Bush administration is formed, calling itself the Project for the New American Century, or PNAC. The group supports more funding for the military and pre-emptive use of American might, if necessary.

The world's first great cities develop along the Euphrates and Tigris rivers. Two regions become dominant: Akkad in the north and Sumer in the south. The Sumerians develop the wheel, writing, counting and calendars. Sargon the Great establishes the Akkadian Empire. Hammurabi establishes Babylon as the region's power center. Hammurabi is best known for a code of laws that bears his name. Assyrian, Babylonian, Hurrian and Elamite kingdoms flourish and vie for ascendancy.

Early History through British Influence
Iraq is a veritable treasure house of antiquities, and recent archaeological excavations have greatly expanded the knowledge of ancient history. Prior to the Arab conquest in the 7th cent. A.D. , Iraq had been the site of a number of flourishing civilizations, including the Sumer , which developed one of the earliest known writing systems, Akkad Babylonia , and Assyria . The capital of the Abbasid caliphate was established at Baghdad in the 8th cent. and the city became a famous center for learning and the arts. Despite fierce resistance, Mesopotamia fell to the Ottoman Turks in the 16th cent. and passed under direct Ottoman administration in the 19th cent. (see Ottoman Empire , when it came to constitute the three Turkish provinces of Basra, Baghdad, and Mosul. At this time the area became of great interest to the European powers, especially the Germans, who wanted to extend the Berlin-Baghdad railroad all the way to the port of Kuwait. Faisal I . With strong reluctance an elected Iraqi assembly agreed in 1924 to a treaty with Great Britain providing for the maintenance of British military bases and for a British right of veto over legislation. By 1926 an Iraqi parliament and administration were governing the country. The treaty of 1930 provided for a 25-year alliance with Britain. The British mandate was terminated in 1932, and Iraq was admitted to the League of Nations.

Letter: Iraq: History repeating itself?
Editor, Your editorial board really hit the nail on the head by asking the tough questions in the Sept. 5 editorial. We have every right to ask if the motives concerning our involvement in Iraq are political. Thirty years ago I was attending K-State, and only within the past few years did I really learn that President Lyndon Johnson had political motives for our involvement in the Vietnam War. In 1966, I didn't even question our president's motives. What a tragic loss and waste of young American lives just to fulfill his selfish political agenda. I fear history is repeating itself 30 years later. The names of the president and the countries are different, but the agendas are the same. Jim Wesch
1966 K-State graduate Do you have an opinion to share?

The conflict in Iraq: History in the making
Arizona Daily Wildcat Jill Dellamalva
"In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue." Students like myself use rhymes, flashcards or just about any other means to cram history facts into our heads. What was that date again? Who was the leader? This is how I study history now. This is how I've been studying it since the fourth grade. This is how I was taught. But history is more than the 100 pages we read the night before the test. History is going on all around us all the time. Here's a present example. MAIN CHARACTERS: Saddam Hussien and President Clinton, (although the government is trying to cast the U.N. as a main character, but I'll get to that later). LOCATION: Iraq. CONFLICT: Iraq won't back down on an order expelling U.S. members of U.N. weapons inspection teams, and it's threatening to shoot down U.N. surveillance planes. SOLUTION: Well, recent newspapers are reporting that the Clinton administration is considering a missile strike on Iraq if it carries out its threats. According to the history books, these kind of conflicts have been going on for quite a while. Perhaps they should have ended when the Gulf War was over. But when General Norman Schwarzkopf was ordered not to continue into Baghdad after bringing troops about 125 miles in the sand without opposition, Saddam Hussien was given the chance to continue tormenting the United States.
