The Psychology of Aboriginal Australians
G.E. Kearney, P.R. de Lacey and G.R. Davidson (1973). Striking refutation of theories that link intelligence to race, in the context of comparisons between European-Austrialians and Australian aborigines. The Psychology of Aboriginal Australians shows the failure of replication of reports on aboriginal IQ testing passed on to the world by Arthur Jensen.

I.Q. Tests and your Child
(by Carolyn Callahan and Howard Eichner)
Question:
A reader from Tampa, Florida writes "I think my child is very bright. Should I ask the school district to give my child an IQ test?"
Answer:
Before requesting that an IQ test be administered to your child, it is very important to know why you wish to know your child's IQ. You have information that leads you to conclude that your child has an exceptional capacity to learn. Is that capacity recognized by the school? Is your child's current level of achievement taken into account in the teacher's planning and instruction? Is your child challenged by the learning environment in which he or she is currently placed? If the answers to these questions are "yes", then there is little reason for requesting further assessment of your child. The teachers in the school are obviously responding to the characteristics you have recognized and an IQ score will do little to enhance the education of your child. On the other hand, if your child is bored or unchallenged by the classroom activities and his or her teachers do not recognize the level of achievement or the knowledge and skills your child has already mastered, there may be a need to provide documentation of your child's learning capacity. If you have attempted to provide evidence of your child's learning capacity and it has been denied by the educators in your child's life, then a request to have further evidence to use as argument of need for a more challenging curriculum may be warranted. Finally, if there are educational opportunities that are available only to students with a demonstrated level of aptitude (as in test score), and you believe that your child should be afforded these opportunities, then you may wish to request testing.

David and Laurie Callihan Authors Aptitude tests are very different from achievement tests. Aptitude tests are used to determine the student's ability to learn a particular skill. There are many types of aptitude tests, meant to measure everything from intelligence quotient (IQ), to ability to learn in school, to likelihood of success in a given occupation. As with any test, be careful not to put too much weight on their interpretation. They are useful as general guides, but they hardly ever offer a complete picture of abilities. For instance, an aptitude test may be able to indicate if a student is under-achieving (high aptitude scores, low achievement scores). However, a low aptitude score may simply indicate the child had a bad day. We recommend using those tests that are normed with an achievement test for the best correlating information. Laurie focused on music in high school and intended to pursue a degree in teaching music until a test in high school revealed she had especially high mechanical aptitude. At the prompting of her guidance counselor, she applied to MIT and other technical institutions for their program in mechanical engineering. Unfortunately, though she had high mechanical aptitude, she hated the ME program and ended up switching to a biology major at another school. In retrospect, she wishes she had stuck with the music program, since that represented her real interest.

Home School Legal Defense Association consistently argued that parents have the fundamental right to teach their own children. And we maintained it could not be demonstrated that teacher certification was an essential qualification for teaching. The number of home schoolers taking the ACT increased more than 40 percent-from 3,200 last year to over 4,600 this year. This increase indicates two things. First, more students are being educated at home. Second, more parents are gaining the confidence to teach their children through high school. On the 2000 Scholastic Achievement Test (SAT), home schooled students achieved an average score of 1100, 81 points above the national average of 1019. About 5700 home schoolers took the SAT this year. The SAT is scored on a scale of 400 to 1600.

Aptitude Tests
Aptitude tests
are a form of psychometric test that assess your ability in a particular skill for instance with words or numbers.
Personality questionnaires
are another form of psychometric assessment. These look at how you react or behave in different situations, and your preferences and attitudes. There are no right or wrong answers and the only way to approach them is to answer the questions honestly! Aptitude tests are administered under exam conditions and are strictly timed - typically each test lasts between 20 and 30 minutes. They are normally multiple choice where you have to select the correct answer from a number of alternatives. Speed is as important as your ability to get the right answer. Note that very often you are not allowed to use calculators in numerical tests.

And unless they've been singled out for remedial education or gifted classes, they probably haven't. The traditional pencil-and-paper IQ test is now seen as an incomplete gauge of intelligence, psychologists and educators say. The exam, which had nearly vanished in discourse about education, made headlines again in June after the Supreme Court, banning the execution of the mentally retarded, determined that IQ scores would be used to help decide whether an inmate should be executed. While the IQ test was once the dominant way educators evaluated ability and predicted performance, the test has now been deemed discriminatory and inaccurate, the experts say. A cadre of achievement-oriented tests has replaced the once vaunted status of the IQ test.

Preschool boosts school success
  • Children who spend more months in preschool do better on achievement tests in the second grade, have fewer behavior problems in third grade, and are less likely to have to repeat a grade. (National Research Council) Children in low-income families who attend preschool do better academically and socially when they get to school and are less likely to repeat a grade or to need special education. (Future of Children)
Quality makes a difference
  • Children from low-income families who had attended quality educational child care programs from birth to age five scored better on reading tests when they got to elementary and middle school. At age 21 they scored higher on IQ, reading, and math tests. They were also more likely to be enrolled in or to have graduated from a four-year college, to be working, and to have delayed parenthood. 20. Intelligence Quotient
A home and school life that encourages learning may result iq thus depends on bothheredity and environment tried to create culturefair or culture-free tests.
http://www.a2zpsychology.com/a2z guide/intelligence_quotient.htm
Intelligence quotient Intelligence quotient, or IQ, is a number used to indicate a person's intelligence. A person's IQ is based on a comparison of his or her score on an intelligence test with the scores of others on the same test.
Testing intelligence. Educators and psychologists use an intelligence test to determine a person's mental age (MA)the level of understanding and performance that the person has reached. Such a test consists of a series of mental tasks arranged in order of difficulty. Most intelligence tests include tasks involving memory, reasoning, definitions, numerical ability, and recalling facts.
Psychologists have worked out the age at which most people can correctly answer each question of an intelligence test. Suppose that a 10-year-old is asked to define certain words, to work out relationships of words and ideas, to solve simple arithmetic problems, and to remember certain facts. The child does as many of these tasks as possible. A child who completes the tasks expected of a 9-year-old but cannot complete those of a 10-year-old has a mental age of 9 years.
Calculating IQ.
