Geography
Topics: Quick Facts Population Education Climate ... Government Iowa lies in the heart of the Midwest, bordered on the east by the Mississippi River and on the west by the Missouri. The landscape is generally characterized by gently rolling plains consisting mainly of open farmland, with clusters of deciduous woodland and crisscrossing streams to complete the picture. Exceptions to the typical landscape are found in the northeast corner of the state with its rock cliffs, and in the river bluffs along the eastern and western borders. Iowa's rivers feed into the Mississippi River from the eastern two thirds of the state, and into the Missouri River mainly from the southwest portion of the state. Geologically, Iowa is a young land. All of Iowa's surface formations were formed in the last 25,000 years, a blink of an eye in geologic time. Glaciers shaped the land during the last ice age, which ended about 10,000 years ago. The glaciers smoothed out the landscape, depositing layers of rock and debris on top of the existing sedimentary rock. The top, newest layer of earth is the rich soil of Iowa that farmers currently use to lead the nation in crop production.

All the information was collected by the students. Davenport LOCATION: (The relative location of Davenport) Davenport is located in the east central part of Iowa, United States of America. It can be found directly along the west bank of the Missisippi River, approximately half way between the state's north and south borders and is directly along Iowa's eastern border. HUMAN-ENVIRONMENT INTERACTION: Davenport is a rail and commercial center for the Mid-west, with major products being processed food and agricultural equipment. The main part of the city of Davenport is urban. Davenport is part of a great urban area called the Quad Cities, which is made up of other cities on both sides of the Missisippi. These cities are back to back with one another, giving the look of one large urban area. MOVEMENT: Movement of people around Davenport is accomplished mainly by automobile. Trucks and the railroad are the major that goods and products are moved. Because is located directly on the Missisippi River, barges are also used to move products up and down the river. Davenport also has a public transportation system (buses) and an airport is located nearby. Davenport has an NBC television station which allows information to be given to the entire population. The is also a newspaper (The Quad City Times) which also allows people access to information. REGION: Though Davenport and Bettendorf are both cites along the Missisippi and border each other, they are actually different in many ways. Bettendorf is smaller and is mostly a residential community, where people live, but the majority work somewhere else. It does not have a major shopping areas, or as much industry. Davenport is the seat of country government, so it has many country, as well as city governmental offices. Bettendorf does not.

    State History
    General History of the State
When early European explorers first saw the land of Iowa in the late 1600s, many Indian groups lived or hunted there. The Iowa, Miami, Ottawa, and Sioux tribes lived along the Mississippi River. The Omaha, Oto, and Missouri tribes lived in the western part of the state. In 1673, French explorers canoed down the Mississippi River reaching the shore of Iowa. It is believed that the 1673 voyage marked the first time that white people visited the region of Iowa. Other expeditions followed and in 1682, Robert Cavelier reached the mouth of the Mississippi River. He claimed the entire region for France and named it Louisiana, in honor of King Louis the Great.
