International Diamond Manufacturers Association

December 2, 1999
Press Release – For Immediate Release The Diamond Manufacturers and Importers Association of America (DMIA, Inc.) is the Association of the leading diamond manufacturing and importing companies in the United States. The DMIA, in concert with the International Diamond Manufacturers Association (IDMA) has, for some time, worked closely with representatives of the United Nations, as well as various non-governmental organizations such as Global Witness, in an effort to bring about an end to the ongoing conflicts in some of the diamond producing regions of Africa. At a meeting of the DMIA on November 30, 1999, its membership voted unanimously to issue a strong and unequivocal statement of support for UN Security Council Resolution 1173. The DMIA membership is repulsed by the ongoing and unnecessary infliction of human suffering in Africa which UN Resolution 1173 seeks to halt. Out Association membership has pledged to do everything possible to cooperate with the United Nations, the government of the United States and the legitimate non-governmental organizations such as Global Witness, in order to ensure full compliance with Resolution 1173 by every member of the diamond industry. Our Association member wish to restate our industry's position of "zero tolerance" for anyone, anywhere in the world, who knowingly and/or intentionally trades in illicit diamonds or, who violates the sanctions imposed by Resolution 1173. We recognize that such violations are clearly unlawful. Our members will not stand by idly while a mere handful of nefarious and presently anonymous criminals purchase illicit rough diamonds in disregard of international law, this to the detriment of the entire global diamond industry. While only a very small percentage of the world's rough diamond supply emanates from Angola, any breach of these principals are nevertheless unacceptable.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course will address some of the issues associated with the governmental regulation of international trade, through a problem oriented approach. At least two regulatory systems will be considered in almost every problem, one being the regulatory regime embodied in the domestic law of the country of import or export, and the other being the system of international agreements (such as WTO/GATT and NAFTA) that are intended to limit the actions which may be taken by individual governments. The impact of "globalization" within this framework will also be considered. Three major areas will be explored (1) tariffs and non-tariff barriers to trade, (2) domestic responses to import competition, and (3) trade regulation and international economic relations. These are topics which potentially concern any business dealing internationally, from global multinational corporations to small start-up ventures desiring to expand abroad.

50 Years Struggle for Sudan Workers:
The Memories of Mahgoub Sid Ahmed
HUMAN RIGHTS AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF WORKERS" MOVEMENT IN THE SUDAN (1946-1996)

BY MAHGOUB SID AHMED In 1996, SHRO-Cairo published a unique book on the Human Rights and the Development of Workers' Movement in The Sudan (1946-1996) by the famous Sudanese trades unionist, Ustaz Mahgoub Sid Ahmed, the Assistant Secretary General for Foreign Relations of the Sudan Workers' Trades Unions Federation (in exile). The book was compiled by Ustaz Ali Mahgoub, SHRO-Cairo executive-administrator, through a strenuous pursuit of Sid Ahmed's memories. The work was further translated by Mahgoub El-Tigani and is now in print. COVER PAGE
Mahgoub Sid Ahmed "The workers trades’ unionist movement was closely linked with popular organizations in the striving for the achievement of national liberation from colonialism in the pre-independence era. Equally important, their movement collaborated with the organizations that struggled for the economic and political independence of the Sudan through the assurance of democratic rule, social welfare, and human rights for the citizenry. The relationships of the workers were strongly correlated with the farmers' movement all over the country, as well as the movement of the youth, women, and students.
