Information Bulletin No. 200112 (Replaces 979811 989913 990001 and 990024) July 2001 TABLE OF CONTENTS INTRODUCTION Local leaders and members are currently faced with many problems and questions concerning certification. This is due in no small part to the certification regulations which went into effect on September 2, 1993 as well as the changes recently adopted by the Regents that go into effect in September 2004. This Bulletin describes those regulations which are currently in place. The purpose of this Information Bulletin is to summarize the information most commonly sought by members and local leaders. Please bear in mind that this Information Bulletin is for INFORMATION ONLY , and is not to be considered as an official interpretation of the rules and regulations of the Commissioner. Official answers on the interpretation of certification regulations and certification status can only be obtained from the Office of Teaching of the State Education Department (see sidebar for contact information). HIGHLIGHTS
    • Certification may be achieved in six ways: through the completion of an approved program; through individual assessment of a candidate's educational background; through Interstate Agreements, including the Northeast Regional Credential; through completion of a new alternative certification program, and new regulations for out-of-state teachers.

    Indiana Teacher Survey Results
The information in this section is based on responses from 123 Indiana teachers who began their teaching careers during the 1994-95 school year and who still were teaching in 1999-2000. This sample was chosen to be representative of the entire 1994-95 population of newly hired Indiana teachers (1,507 teachers). All 123 teachers were asked to indicate the availability of, and their satisfaction with, 21 characteristics associated with teaching. The teachers then were asked to rate the importance of each characteristic for their decision to continue teaching. Table 1 below shows the seven characteristics that the novice teachers in Indiana judged to be most important to their decision to continue their teaching career, the percentage of teachers indicating the perceived importance of each job characteristic, and the percentage indicating satisfaction with each job characteristic. It shows some of the disincentives for beginning teachers to continue teaching in Indiana. Table 1. Programs of Study The Center offers an alternative approach to the conventional method for preparing vocational teachers called field-based, performance-based teacher education (F/PBTE). With F/PBTE, the classroom at the school where the vocational intern teacher is employed (inservice teacher) or assigned (pre-service teacher) becomes the site for delivery of the program. Consequently, travel to a university or university center to obtain vocational professional credit is greatly reduced. Vocational teachers are required to demonstrate occupational/technical proficiency on a nationally standardized Occupational Competency Examination , and to complete 60 semester hours of the Pennsylvania Department of Education's approved university program. A plan of studies will be tailored to each student's unique background and professional needs.
