Indian Art
PARTHA MITTER

The only survey to cover fully all the key periods in Indian artincluding colonial and contemporary art

This concise yet lively new survey guides the reader through 5,000 years of Indian art and architecture. A rich artistic tradition is fully explored through the Hindu, Buddhist, Islamic, Colonial, and contemporary periods, incorporating discussion of modern Bangladesh and Pakistan, tribal artists, and the decorative arts. Combining a clear overview with fascinating detail, Mitter succeeds in bringing to life the true diversity of Indian culture. The influence of Islam on the Mughal court, which produced the world-famous Taj Mahal and exquisite miniature paintings, is closely examined. More recently, he discusses the nationalist and global concerns of contemporary art, including the rise of female artists, the stunning architecture of Charles Correa, and the vibrant art scene. The very particular character of Indian art is set within its cultural and religious milieu, raising important issues about the profound differences between Western and Indian ideas of beauty and eroticism in art.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The Florida Museum of Natural History will display selections from an important 19th- and early 20th-century American Indian art collection beginning March 22 during "The Pearsall Collection of American Indian Art: 40th Anniversary Selections.” Many selections from this little-known collection will be on exhibit for the public for the first time in 40 years to honor the collector, Leigh Morgan Pearsall, as well as the University of Florida's acquisition of the collection in 1963. Pearsall, who retired to Melrose in the 1950s, spent his life collecting art from nearly every Native American cultural group in North America. He also bought other entire collections, leading him to become the owner of one of the largest private American Indian art collections in the nation during the early 1900s. “Pearsall’s collecting passion brought him into competition with George Gustav Heye, whose collection is the foundation of the new National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C.,” said guest curator Sandra Starr.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The Florida Museum of Natural History will present two lectures on March 22 that coincide with the opening of "The Pearsall Collection of American Indian Art: 40th Anniversary Selections" exhibition. At 1 p.m., Pearsall exhibit guest curator Sandra Starr will speak about "Early 20th Century American Indian Art Collectors: Hero or Villain?" Starr will discuss the story of L.M. Pearsall and how he came to collect over 3,000 objects of American Indian art. "While the collector is viewed as a hero for saving objects of the past that will inform the future, he may also be considered a villain for removing objects of heritage that provide vital links in cultural continuity to Indian communities," Starr said. At 2 p.m., Dr. Gerald McMaster, Plains Cree, deputy director for cultural resources at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian will explore the idea of "native voice" versus the authoritative voice of museums. "Museums across the country have long informed visitors about the 'cultural other' in ways that are now being challenged," McMaster said. "Today, contemporary artists are using particular strategies to critique the museum voice. In this presentation, I will examine the idea of native voice in the works of contemporary native artists through the ideas of authority, representation, perspective and visuality."

Annual faculty lecture will paint history of Northwest Coast Indian art
Ever since 1774, when the Spanish explorer Juan Perez made the first recorded contact with the native people of the Northwest Coast, the outside world has been drawn to their artistic creations. Perez and James Cook, the English explorer who circumnavigated Vancouver Island four years later, were the earliest gatherers of Northwest Coast Indian art. A full appreciation and understanding of this art – an astounding array that includes totem poles, masks, ceremonial objects, canoes, boxes and baskets – would have to wait for nearly two centuries. This tale of discovery is the topic for the 27th annual University of Washington faculty lecture to be delivered by Bill Holm at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 14 in Kane Hall, room 130, on the UW's Seattle campus. Holm is professor emeritus of art history and Burke Museum emeritus curator of Northwest Coast Indian Art. His topic for the free lecture, which is open to the general public, is "The Exploration of Northwest Coast Indian Art 1774-2003." Holm is a noted scholar, perhaps most well-known for his seminal 1965 book "Northwest Coast Indian Art: An Analysis of Form," which has been called a Rosetta stone in understanding the art produced along the west coast of the United States and Canada. He also taught art history and anthropology at the UW and is artist in his own right whose work focuses on Northwest Coast, Plateau and Plains Indians.
