62. India The Melting Pot Of Cultural Diversity!
with 15 officially recognised languages, various styles of art, architecture, literature, music and dance, india has a fascinating culture. india's culture.
http://www.embassyofindia.com/in_cult.htm
MAP FACT SHEET VISITING INDIA India's Culture With about 800 dialects and 15 officially recognized languages, several religions including Hinduism, Islam, Christianity, Jainism, Buddhism, Sikhism, Zoroastrianism and Judaism, various styles of art, architecture, literature, music and dance, and several lifestyles from the urban and rural to the tribal, India is a melting pot of cultural diversity. Indian dance has an unbroken tradition of over 2000 years, with themes drawn from mythology, legends and classical literature. It also can be broadly divided into folk/tribal dances which have many regional variations, and the classical dances, which are based on ancient texts and have rigid rules of presentation. Some of the major classical dance traditions are Bharata Natyam, Kathak, Odissi, Manipuri, Kuchipudi, Mohiniattam and Kathakali. Indian literature can date its origins to the oral tradition of the Vedas and the great epics of India, which are still an integral part of daily life. Poetry, drama, fiction, non-fiction and all other literary styles have a substantial corpus in each of India's major languages and in quite a few dialects, while the oral tradition also continues through folk songs and dramas. Theatre in India also has ancient historical roots, though classical theatre is performed very rarely nowadays, having been overtaken by a vibrant tradition of folk theatre (including puppet and shadow theatre) and modern professional theatre, which draws not only dramas written in any Indian language but also on non-Indian theatre from Shakespeare to Chekov to Andrew Lloyd Webber, either in English or in translation.

Indian Languages

The Indian subcontinent consists of a number of separate linguistic communities each of which share a common language and culture. The people of India speak many languages and dialects which are mostly varieties of about 15 principal languages. Though distinctive in parts, all stand for a homogeneous culture that is the essence of the great Indian literature. This is an evolution in a land of myriad dialects. The number of people speaking each language varies greatly. For example, Hindi has more than 250 million speakers, but relatively few people speak Andamanese. India's schools teach 58 different languages. The nation has newspapers in 87 languages, radio programmes in 71, and films in 15. The Indian languages belong to four language families: Indo-European, Dravidian, Mon-Khmer, and Sino-Tibetan. Indo-European and Dravidian languages are used by a large majority of India's population. The language families divide roughly into geographic groups. Languages of the Indo-European group are spoken mainly in northern and central regions. The languages of southern India are mainly of the Dravidian group. Some ethnic groups in Assam and other parts of eastern India speak languages of the Mon-Khmer group. People in the northern Himalayan region and near the Burmese border speak Sino-Tibetan languages.
Festivals and Fairs
The Indian calendar is a long procession of festivals; if you can find yourself in the right place at the right time, it is possible to go through your visit with a festival each day. The harvest festivals of the south, the immersion of Ganesh in Bombay, the car Festival of Puri, snake-boat races in Kerala, Republic Day in Delhi... every region, every religion has something to celebrate.

Culture The Indus River Valley civilization people had a very advanced culture, as you will find out when you read on. They had many belief's, and many set ways of life. Bathes The people of the Indus Valley had a very complex culture. They had a place in their Valley called The Great Bath. The Great Bath was like a large bath that the priests would bathe in when they wanted to cleanse their souls. The Great Bath was a religious necessity. So were many other things in all the Indus Valley peoples' life. Marriages Ancient India's culture had many strong beliefs about how to live. They would have arranged marriages for all of their children. When the parents of both families would arrange the marriages the parents of the women would have to give a dowry. Dowries were like gifts that the women's side of the family would give to the future husband. The dowry was usually consisted of goods that the husband could use, so he wouldn't have to supply them. These were given in repayment for the trouble they were going through by marrying their daughter. They thought that it was a big trouble for the men to marry their daughter so they gave them a dowry. Religion The Indus River Valley people's religion was a very important part of their culture. Their two main religions were Hinduism and Buddhism. Hinduism was around the Indus civilization before Buddhism. Buddhism was started in India in 365 B.C. by a young man named Siddhatha Gautama.

Indian Cuisine
The unforgettable aroma of India is not just the heavy scent of jasmine and roses on the warm air. It is also the fragrance of spices so important to Indian cooking - especially to preparing curry.
The word "curry" is an English derivative of "kari", meaning spice sauce, but curry does not, in India, come as a powder. It is the subtle and delicate blending of spices such as turmeric, cardamom, ginger, coriander, nutmeg and poppy seed. Like an artist's palette of oil paints, the Indian cook has some twenty-five spices (freshly ground as required) with… more

N o land on earth has such a long cultural continuity as India – a mixture of popular philosophy, tradition, history, myth and legend. The story of Indian culture is one of unity and synthesis, of reconciliation and development, of harmony and assimilation, of fusion of old traditions and new values. Indian culture is the honey prepared from the nectar of cultural activities from various parts of the country. India’s geography has played a dominant part in its cultural unity and fusion. Physical features so sharply mark off India from neighboring countries that attempts to divide the country or to expand it beyond its limits have failed in its long history.

A thirsty nation
The country that produces the most tea, also drinks the most tea. About 75% of Indian tea (about 600m kilos) is consumed in the home market. The is surprise is that before commercial growing began in the first half of the nineteenth century, tea-drinking was virtually unknown in India.
Tea leaves go further in India than they do elsewhere. Strong teas that give good, cup-after-cup extraction rates are preferred. The more cups from a single brew, the better.
A meal in a cup
Indian tea is brewed in a single pot with lots of milk and sugar – and sometimes spices – all added at the same time. Each pot is brewed many times over to make it go further.
With all those calories piled in, tea becomes a far more sustaining drink. In a nation where hunger is never far away, tea is drunk as if it were a food. At street-corner and roadside teashops, it provides an instant pick-me-up and a chance to linger for a moment to catch up on the news of the day. R Twining and Company Limited 2001

Hinduism
The mega-tradition of India.Possibly the most ancient of human traditions and is fascinating and well worth studying. It is main religion and the social system of India. Jainism Jainism traces its roots to a succession of 24 Jinas ("those who overcome", or conqueror) in ancient East India. The first Jina is traditionally believed to have been a giant who lived 8.4 million years ago. The most recent and last Jina and the founder of the Jain community was Mahavira, "The Great Hero". Jainism is a syncretistic religion, which contains many elements similar to Hinduism and Buddhism. Sikhism The tradition that developed from the teachings of Guru Nanak and his nine successors. There are about fourteen million Sikhs worldwide, most of them still living in or near the Punjab state of northern India. Christianity St Thomas the Doubter brought Christianity to India before it reached Rome. St Francis Xavier's body still lies here. And Christianity has left its mark in different parts of the country and in different ways.
