Pop Quiz: 1. Why were Betty Currie's cell phone records important? 2. What was the Gorton-Lieberman plan and what happened to it? I'll wager that 1) you don't know the answers; and 2) you don't care. And that is the news. (If you are genuinely curious about the answers, click here An anniversary passed strangely and happily without notice this week: Six months ago, the president was impeached. During the Flytrap hullabaloo, commentators promised that the country would spend years pondering the meaning of this impeachment. They could not have been more wrong. It's been half a year since impeachment and four months since acquittal, but it might as well be a generation for all that America has thought about it. Americans don't gossip about it, pollsters don't poll about it, pundits don't pund about it, the torrent of Nexis articles has dried to a trickle, and even the mythical Washington dinner party is devoid of impeachment talk. "Even the senators I have been talking to say they haven't thought about it at all. They had an active desire to rid their memory of it. The level of traumatic amnesia is quite remarkable," says Ross Baker, a Rutgers University political scientist who studies impeachment.

Impeachment
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Impeachment is the process by which a legislative body formally levels charges against a high official of government. Impeachment does not necessarily mean removal from office; it is only a formal statement of charges, akin to an indictment in criminal law , and is thus only the first step towards removal. Once an individual is impeached, he or she must then face the possibility of conviction via legislative vote, which then entails the removal of the individual from office. Because impeachment and conviction of officials involves an overturning of the normal Constitutional procedures by which individuals achieve high office (election, ratification, or appointment), it is usually only reserved for those deemed to have committed serious abuses of their office. In the United States , for example, impeachment at the Federal level is reserved for those who may have committed "high crimes and misdemeanors". Several Federal officials, including two Presidents and several judges, have been impeached over the course of US history.

This section cites the many times during the impeachment battle when Dan Rather displayed his desire for President Clinton to stay in office. Sometimes he defended Clinton outright, and other times he defended him through the use of euphemisms, questions, choosing only one side of a controversy to tell viewers about, and by insisting that the president's crisis was merely about Clinton's sex life , and not about whether or not perjury and obstruction of justice occurred. Still other times he would defend him by regularly presenting polls favorable to the President and negative to then-Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr
A fitting cartoon: Dan Rather's Impeachment. Rather showed a poll in the midst of the impeachment inquiry:

"There's a gap tonight between Congress's view and what the public wants next."
Dan Rather on the CBS Evening News , September 15, 1998. "Senator, when you talk to other Senators, particularly older Senators those who've been around for a bit is or is there not some concern of the public, concern in some quarters, not all of them Democratic, that this is in fact a kind of effort at a quote 'coup,'

Impeachment 1868/1999
by Eric Foner
Once before in American history, during the turbulent era of Reconstruction that followed the Civil War, a president was impeached by the House of Representatives and tried before the Senate. This was Andrew Johnson, like Clinton a Southerner who had alienated a majority of Republicans in Congress. There, however, similarities between the two impeachments begin and end. Johnson’s Reconstruction policy is often described as one of "leniency" toward the South. It was lenient enough to white Southerners, whom Johnson quickly restored to control over local affairs. To the four million emancipated slaves, however, Johnson’s lily-white plan of Reconstruction was extremely punitive. Johnson ordered black families evicted from land on which they had been settled by the U. S. army, and through the notorious Black Codes, the southern governments he created attempted to reduce blacks back to the condition of dependent plantation laborers. Between 1865 and 1867, Northern Republicans slowly became convinced that Reconstruction must recognize blacks as American citizens entitled to equality before the law and, for men, the right to vote. Johnson, a thoroughgoing racist, opposed these policies. The 1866 Congressional elections, a sweeping victory for the Republicans, demonstrated that unlike Clinton, Johnson had little popular support. Nonetheless, Johnson attempted to use the patronage and his command of the army to obstruct Congressional policies.

In the hallways of the Smithsonian, two moralists are debating the impeachment of the President of the United States of America, Mr. William Jefferson Clinton. One is clearly Anti-Clinton (AC) the other, a Democrat (DC), is not so much for him as he is for the rational and pragmatic application of moral principles.

The Impeachement of William Jefferson Clinton?
*Impeachment* There seems to be a rising possibility that the sitting President of the United States, William Jefferson Clinton, could be impeached. Proceedings had already been proposed even before the present scandals of possible subornation of a witness (Monica Lewinsky), and possible bribery by the Chinese Red Army. Congressman Bob Barr along with 18 other congressmen requested that the house judiciary committee begin the process. At the time he submitted that request, the president may have been guilty of accepting bribes, in the form of campaign contributions, for access to his power. It may be time to read up on the issue. The Conservative Bookstore staff has put together a list of a few books that you will want to take a look at. Click on a title for more information or to order: The Federal Impeachment Process: A Constitutional and Historical Analysis (hb) by Michael J. Gerhardt is a good place to start. Besides a thorough explanation of the process, it goes into the historical background of impeachment up to the present day. Presidential Impeachment by John R. Labovitz is a good book to peruse in the present political crisis. All manner of government officials can be impeached, from judges to presidents. This book focuses on the latter.

President Olusegun Obasanjo Weathers a Political Storm
Nigeria: Impeachment Impasse
Sarah Coleman
World Press Review contributing editor
Oct. 18, 2002
(Photo: AFP) Though his international profile is riding high following his involvement in the recently founded African Union and the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) economic recovery plan, Nigeria’s President Olusegun Obasanjo may be fighting for his political life at home. Obasanjo, a former military ruler of Nigeria whose 1999 election as president ended 15 years of military rule in the country, has said that he will seek a second term of office in a national election scheduled for early 2003. But if powerful elements in the Nigerian legislature have their way, the president may be impeached before he can get on the campaign trail. On Aug. 13, the Nigerian House of Representatives issued a two-week ultimatum to Obasanjo to resign or face impeachment proceedings. A main reason given for the threat was the president’s failure to implement the 2002 budget, but in a total of 17 charges, members of Parliament also accused him of disregarding Parliament’s authority, traveling too frequently, and failing to control violence in the country.

We go all out stoking up the blood lust for a war and before we even get it started Sharon is already asking us to start another against Iran.
