The program has members from the Departments of Medicine, Pathology, Genetics and Pediatrics of the Faculty of Medicine. It offers a wide range of areas for education and research in the rapidly growing field of immunology, including immunochemistry, molecular immunology, cellular immunology, tumor immunology, cell activation, allergic inflammation, immunogenetics, and immune deficiency. Courses may be chosen from the offerings of all faculties of Harvard as well as from those of the Masachusetts Institute of Technology. Kentucky Wesleyan College IMMUNOLOGY (BIOLOGY 4412) SYLLABUSSpring, 2003 Instructor: Dr. D.F. Oetinger - Admin 204B - X3160 - acantho@kwc.edu Objectives of the Course: Immunology is an integration of many sub-disciplines of biology, most notably: microbiology, parasitology, histology, cell biology, physiology and biochemistry. In Immunology the student will become acquainted with theories and phenomena explaining the interactions of animals (and man) with their environments, and with other living organisms. The course should provide ample insights into areas of basic research as well as topics related to human immunology. While laboratory cannot always be closely synchronized with lecture, information will be mutually supportive. Laboratory time will allow the student opportunities to carry out standard immunological procedures, demonstrating some of the theories and phenomena of immunology. In so doing, the student should gain experience and develop dexterity in performing routine laboratory procedures. The student will also be given opportunity to carry out experimental protocols, illustrating known immunological principles or testing new hypotheses. Required Textbook and Laboratory Manual: Tizard, I. R. 1995. Immunology, 4th Ed. Saunders College Pub., NY

The Metchnikoff Club provides a forum for scientists in the Edinburgh area with interests in immunology. It organizes seminars on topics of current immunological interest and circulates information on local research and jobs in immunology. Metchnikoff Club meetings are held every few weeks during academic terms and consist of seminars given by leading research immunologists followed by informal discussions over wine. Our meetings are open to anyone interested in immunology. However, the continued success of the Club depends on postgraduate student members and those who are staff in paid, full time employment making a voluntary annual contribution to its running costs. Subscribers receive Email notification of the Club's meetings and other relevant news. Activities of the Metchnikoff Club are organized by a committee made up of representatives from most sites at the universities , hospitals and institutes in the Edinburgh area. If you have any suggestions for future activities please contact the Secretary

Why Study Aging? By the year 2003, the percentage of older Americans (65 years and older) is expected to increase approximately 22%. The average male can expect to live to age 79 and the average female to age 84. This increase in life expectancy is largely due to discoveries in the basic sciences and public health measures that have improved health standards. Increased longevity does not exist without its problems. It is apparent that a decline in the immune system plays an important role in the onset of many age-related health problems. Aging brings about an increase in the incidence of cancer, infection, and autoimmune disease. The elderly suffer reduced ability to fight infectious disease and tumor cells. Many older persons respond poorly to vaccines. Elevated production of inflammatory cytokines by lymphocytes and macrophages in aged individuals may lead to age-related diseases. Although many age-related changes in the immune system have been described, little is known about the mechanisms that bring about the decline in immune function in the elderly. Research in immunogerontology must continue in order to unravel the mysteries of aging and to provide future solutions to the challenges that our aging population will face in the 21st century. The Immunology and Aging Program is comprised of a group of research scientists at Loyola University Medical Center who are interested in addressing the mechanisms of aging of the immune system in order to improve the quality of life for the elderly.

Albany Medical College
Albany Medical College, one of the nation's oldest private medical schools, prides itself in offering an intimate, collegial environment which fosters humane values and genuine learning. The institution was founded in 1839 with an initial enrollment of 57 medical students. In 1953, the first graduate student received a Master of Science degree from the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology. Two years later students received Doctor of Philosophy from the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology as well as the Department of Pathology.
As expressed in the Act of Incorporation, the primary mission of Albany Medical College is to "promote medical science and instruction in the departments of learning connected there with." Albany Medical College continues to pursue excellence in the education of health care personnel, research in the basic and clinical medical sciences, and services to the community.
Union University
In 1873, Albany Medical College affiliated with Union College and Albany Law School to form Union University. They were later joined by Albany College of Pharmacy and Dudley Observatory. Each institution has its own governing board and its own programs. The Board of Governors of Union University serves both to advise and to expand the areas of voluntary cooperation.
