Addison East Peoria Macomb Quincy ... Prospect Heights ILLINOIS - Geography Midwestern state in the N central United States. It is bordered by Lake Michigan and Indiana (E); Kentucky, across the Ohio R. (SE); Missouri and Iowa, across the Mississippi R. (W); and Wisconsin (N). The broad level lands that gave Illinois the nickname Prairie State were fashioned by late Cenozoic glaciation, which leveled rugged ridges and filled valleys over the northern and central parts of the state. The fertile prairies are drained by more than 275 rivers, most of which flow to the Mississippi-Ohio system; the Illinois is the largest river in the state. These rivers provided early explorers a way SW from Lake Michigan into the interior of the continent and later, in the days of canal building, played a big part in hastening settlement of the prairies. The completion of the Erie Canal linked Illinois, through the Great Lakes, to the eastern seaboard of the United States. The Illinois Waterway links Chicago to the Mississippi basin as the old Chicago and Illinois and Michigan canals once did, and the St. Lawrence Seaway provides access for oceangoing vessels. The waterways are but a part of a transportation complex that includes railroads, airlines (Chicago's O'hare airport is one of the busiest in the world), and an extensive modern highway system.

Geography Lesson Princeton men's basketball has literally gone from coast to coast. Jan. 9, 2003 When Princeton played in the Cable Car Classic between Christmas and New Year's, it marked a homecoming of sorts for the four Tigers from the state of California. That would be more than 25% of the current roster. In recent years, Princeton's roster has had a decidedly Californian flair to it. Beginning with the Class of 2000, Princeton has had 32% (six of 19) of its players who have either lettered as seniors or are still on the team come from the Golden State. That trend is set for the near future, as two of the four members of the incoming Class of 2007 are from California. Of all the trends in Princeton basketball in the last 30 years, perhaps the most interesting and least talked about is not the shot clock, the three-pointer or the up-tempoing of the offense. It's geography.

Volume I: Geography in Illinois History G eography has played an important role in Illinois history. Geography has influenced where people have chosen to hunt, gather, farm, settle, and industrialize. People have left their mark on the land, and studies of human interaction with the land are the focus of archaeological investigations, archival studies, and historical research. Geography cuts across time and space. It is one of the most useful concepts for comprehending human activity, whether studied from the perspective of social science or the humanities. The study of geography is organized around five fundamental themes developed jointly by the National Council for Geographic Education and the Association of American Geographers: location, place, human environment interaction, movement, and regions. Their Guidelines for Geographic Education: Elementary and Secondary Schools represents the collective professional wisdom of American and Canadian geographic educators and geographers. The Guidelines , which have been widely accepted as the basis for geographic education, are used to organize this volume.
