Map and Geography Library
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign about the library collections digital journals web links ... home Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps The Map and Geography Library has a large collection of Sanborn Fire Insurance maps for Illinois cities. Sanborn maps were made to assist insurance underwriters in determining fire insurance rates for individual buildings by examining the buildings' construction methods, heat and lighting sources, manufacturing uses, and the same attributes of nearby buildings. The maps primarily provide information on the downtown areas of cities and adjoining residential areas. They are especially useful in providing a record of urban development from the 1880s through the first half of the twentieth century. Family historians may also find them interesting. Map and Geography Library personnel will retrieve Sanborn maps for patrons upon request. Sanborn maps are available for consultation Mondays through Fridays, 9:00am-4:30pm. The Map and Geography Library can also provide information about other libraries that have Sanborn map coverage of cities in states not included in the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Library Sanborn collection.

Welcome to the Department of Anthropology at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Anthropology is the study of human cultural and biological diversity over time and space. The expertise of the faculty gives students the opportunity to pursue interests in most of the major eras and geographical areas of the world. The Department of Anthropology offers programs in Anthropology and Geography, both at the undergraduate and graduate level. The department has research laboratories supporting studies in archaeology, sociocultural anthropology, physical anthropology, and environmental and urban geography. The archaeology faculty offers opportunities for student fieldwork and data analysis; facilities for and training in microwear analysis. The program in biological anthropology emphasizes paleoanthropology and human evolution. There are training opportunities and affiliated faculty at the Medical Center on the campus, and at the Field Museum of Natural History. The program in cultural and social anthropology, while emphasizing theoretical and topical diversity, has area emphasis in Africa, South Asia, Europe, Oceania, and the Americas.

The Island Project
This web site was developed by the students in Ms. Kathy Dorman's 1995-96 5th Grade Class at University of Chicago Lab Schools. The stories and maps are entirely student work. Maps were drawn by hand then scanned; map titles were added by the students using Adobe Photoshop. Students wrote and edited their stories, by hand and on computer. Then they made final corrections suggested by a teacher.
