    Abbreviation:
ID The state's name is thought to be an Indian name, Ee-dah-hoe, which means "gem of the mountains." Idaho, the 43rd state, joined the U.S. in 1890. Logging as well as mining are big industries in the state. But the state is probably best known for its potatoes. Idaho has a rugged landscape with some of the largest unspoiled natural areas in the country. Idaho is a Rocky Mountains state with exciting scenery and enormous natural resources. Idaho has towering, snow-capped mountain ranges, swirling white rapids, peaceful lakes and steep canyons. The churning waters of Snake River rush through Hells Canyon, which is deeper than the Grand Canyon. Shoshone Falls plunges down rugged cliffs from a height greater than that of Niagara Falls. Idaho is a skier's paradise but also provides excellent opportunities for hikers and campers during the summer.

Geography The Panhandle of Idaho is only 50 miles wide, while the southern portion is more than 300 miles wide. Each area has a varied type of geography. Forested mountains, large lakes and pastureland are all found in the panhandle area. The Rocky Mountain Ranges are found in much of the north-central area. The Snake River valley has the lowest spot in the state and has spawned several magnificent waterfalls. The Salmon River, sometimes known as "The River of No Return," is rival to the Snake River and eventually joins it south of Lewiston. Some of the larger lakes in Idaho are Coeur d'Alene, Pend Oreille, Priest, Payette Lakes and Bear Lake which is partially in Utah too.

    About INSIDE Idaho
I NSIDE Idaho was made possible by a 1999 Congressional Appropriated National Leadership grant awarded to the University of Idaho Library by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. A 1999 FGDC "Don't Duck Metadata" grant provided by the US Geological Survey made the creation of FGDC compliant metadata possible for INSIDE Idaho. In addition, two FGDC CAP Program grants have been awarded to the team members of the INSIDE Idaho Project in FY 2001/2002. Two team members who received the Metadata Training grant will be conducting metadata workshops through out the region to train other GIS users to create metadata. The Web Mapping grant will provide funding to further enhance the functionality and mapping applications for INSIDE Idaho.
The main purpose of this project is the creation of a digital geospatial and numeric data library for the state of Idaho. Geospatial and numeric data sources for the state are scattered and housed in individual agencies and libraries, not only in various formats but also mostly unavailable for public access. Data format conversion and documentation often require significant computer hardware, software resources and technical experts. The creation of a centralized virtual library via Internet eliminates the duplication of efforts and provides efficient access to resources. This project hopes to achieve enduring information environments for research and learning, to increase the use of public domain government information by providing easier access, and to improve public knowledge of the new accessibility to resources within INSIDE Idaho.
