23. Landforms Of Idaho
Anticipatory Set Students will watch the video Visions of idaho geography. The studentswill have many experiences with Idaho, and its geography and people.
http://education.boisestate.edu/interchange/lessons2000/idaho.htm
Landforms of Idaho Subject: Social Studies/Landforms of Idaho Grade 4 Presented by Olivia Kardos and Linda Porter Anticipatory Set:
Students will watch the video Visions of Idaho: Geography . The IPTV video will introduce to students where Idaho is in relation to the United States and will identify and describe Idaho's key physical features.
The teacher will ask questions to get an idea of what students know about Idaho before the video:
1. List what you know about the landforms or geography of Idaho.
2. What is a landform? Objective:
Over two weeks the students will research and make a replica topographic map of Idaho. Important landforms of Idaho will be made and identified by students. Besides identifying important landforms, students will also be able to:
1. Compare and contrast different landforms of Idaho.
2. Analyze why people moved in specific geographic areas of Idaho. Input:
The teacher will group students into five groups of five. Each group will draw one of the major landforms from a can.
Mountains/Valleys
Rivers Lakes Unusual Landforms The mountains and valleys will be grouped together because they are one of the harder landforms to make, and they take up most of the area of the maps. Students can decide how they will split up the tasks in their own groups. The teacher will be available for help. The teacher will have several reference books for the students to use, and the pages will be marked so the students can easily find important material. We will discuss the importance of a glossary, index, and gazetteer.

Teacher's Guide
to Craters of the Moon Activity 2C
The Creeping Hot Spots
Students learn about the Mantle Plume Theory, plate tectonics, and Idaho geography by experimenting with a map of Idaho. Objectives:
  • Students will be able to explain the basics of the Mantle Plume Theory.
  • Students will understand that the crust slides over the mantle.
  • Students will be able to name key cities and geologic features of Idaho.
Duration:
1 to 2 hours Background:
The theory of plate tectonics explains much of Earth's geology. For example, California's famous San Andreas fault is formed where two tectonic plates come together and slide by each other. The tension that is created along the fault is periodically released, like a rubberband stretched to its breaking point, resulting in earthquakes. Other geologic phenomena require a combination of theories to be explained. For example, events creating the Snake River Plain that stretches across southern Idaho from Oregon to Wyoming cannot be described as easily as the San Andreas fault. A combination of "Rifting," "Basin and Range Faulting," "the Mantle Plume Theory," and Plate Tectonics are required to explain that big crescent. For a concise description of these theories and the likely sequence of events that made the Snake River Plain see pages 2.1 to 2.5. The student activity that follows will require that you understand the basics of these theories.

Idaho Geospatial Data Center
Project History
Overview
The Idaho Geospatial Data Center is a digital library for public-domain geographic data about the state of Idaho that is accessible free-of-charge to any group or person. This service is provided by the University of Idaho Geography Department and the Library as part of its charge to provide public access to a wide variety of mapping products. This central data repository is shared over the Internet to save time, money, and computer resources. User access to the data is provided through a flexible interface featuring geographic entity and location queries.
Background
Idaho Geospatial Data Center (IGDC) was created by the collaborative research team from the University of Idaho ( Department of Geography and the UI Library), the Lewis Clark State College (LCSC), and the Idaho Geological Survey. This research project was funded by the Idaho Board of Education'sTechnology Incentive Program. The IGCD was developed to create a digital information infrastructure for a geospatial data library and an interactive World Wide Web (WWW) Geographic Information Systems (GIS) training center for the state of Idaho.
The infrastructure is comprised of GeoLibrary software that allows access and retrieves all Digital Line Graphs (DLGs), Digital Raster Graphics (DRGs), Digital Elevation Models (DEMs), and Tiger boundary files for the state of Idaho. Additionally the site provides interactive links to other Idaho and national spatial data repositories. This digital library collects and distributes spatial data about Idaho via the Internet, that is quite different from a traditional library although the basic functions of documenting and distributing information are the same. Rather than being a centralized collection site, a digital library acts as an intermediary agent, providing access via computer networks to geographically distributed collection sites.

Post Falls fifth grader wins poster contest
: Thanks to Karisa Whitten, her fifth grade class at Mullan Trail Elementary was treated to an ice cream party sponsored by the Post Falls Fire District. Karisa was the winner of the North Idaho Injury Prevention Coalition's National Child Passenger Safety Week poster contest, and her winning entry will be on display in Boise at the Office of Highway Safety. Sheriffs deputy building float : What started out as a dilapidated, decrepit and stolen 1986 Jeep Cherokee has turned into something that amazes neighbors and even has its builder, Kootenai County Sheriffs Deputy Gary Dagastine, shaking his head, is now a nearly complete, 21- foot long, eight foot wide parade float, designed to raise awareness of multiple sclerosis. Gary began working on the float last February, and it's grown to dominate the driveway of his Post Falls home. Once complete, he plans to enter the float in parades throughout the region. First triplets in memory born at KMC: Rebecca Brooks, 25, Post Falls, gave birth to two boys and a girl, all healthy, March 16, the first triplets born at Kootenai Medical Center in the memory of anyone on staff. Kallie Rae, Kayne Lee and Kiel Henry, who join Dad Wayne and two sisters ages three and five, are likely to be the first triplets ever born at the hospital, said hospital spokesman Mike Regan, though he said there's no way to prove the assertion. Nurses, some of whom have been at the hospital for 25 years, say they are.

http://www.lili.org/isl/ltai/ThemesBooks/closetohome.htm
Writing Close to Home Contemporary writers John Rember, Gino Sky, and Tom Spanbauer draw heavily upon personal experience and Idaho geography in their fiction. By William Studebaker Life is opaque and dull compared to fiction. Fiction compresses and dramatizes. Fiction selectively alters what is left of life lived, memories and emotions, creating a synthetic but affirmable reality. Fiction can be as simple as mixing an acid with a base or as enigmatic as quantum physics. It cannot, however, be separate from mind: the writer's mind, the reader's mind. In order to appreciate fiction, minds must share some elemental data that turns what was written into what is read. Tom Spanbauer, John Rember, and Gino Sky draw heavily upon Idaho geography and their own lives. It is a suitable truth that finally creates fictional plausibility. The tricks to the trade are many, but none is so often tried as the manipulation of indigenous imagery and family crisis. Done correctly they construct a dynamic link, a fictional truth, between writer and reader. Tome Spanbauer, John Rember, and Gino Sky are three contemporary writers who draw heavily upon Idaho geography and their own lives to fuel their fiction. They write close to home.
