Craig Meets with Idaho Geography Bee Champ
WASHINGTON, DC - Idaho Senator Larry Craig met today with Alex Price, Idaho's Geography Bee champion. Price placed sixteenth out of 55 contestants at the National Geography Bee competition held this week, making it to the semifinals. "Alex has done all of Idaho proud. He is a bright young man, and what he accomplished is truly remarkable. He only missed two questions during the entire competition," said Craig. "It was an honor to meet Alex and his family." Nationwide, five million children participated in the Geography Bee. Price, an 8th grader at West Junior High in Boise, earned an all-expenses paid trip to the nation's capital to represent Idaho. A ten-year old from Michigan was crowned the national champion today.

Once you leave the agricultural Upper Snake River Valley outside of Ashton, Idaho, you'll actually be driving up the edge of the caldera, a collapsed valcano. Once you're on top, the landscape is relatively flat with rolling hills and surrounded by mountains. http://coehp.boisestate.edu/interchange/lessons2000/idaho.htm
Landforms of Idaho Subject: Social Studies/Landforms of Idaho Grade 4 Presented by Olivia Kardos and Linda Porter Anticipatory Set:
Students will watch the video Visions of Idaho: Geography . The IPTV video will introduce to students where Idaho is in relation to the United States and will identify and describe Idaho's key physical features.
The teacher will ask questions to get an idea of what students know about Idaho before the video:
1. List what you know about the landforms or geography of Idaho.
2. What is a landform? Objective:
Over two weeks the students will research and make a replica topographic map of Idaho. Important landforms of Idaho will be made and identified by students. Besides identifying important landforms, students will also be able to:
1. Compare and contrast different landforms of Idaho.
2. Analyze why people moved in specific geographic areas of Idaho. Input:
The teacher will group students into five groups of five. Each group will draw one of the major landforms from a can.
Mountains/Valleys
Rivers Lakes Unusual Landforms The mountains and valleys will be grouped together because they are one of the harder landforms to make, and they take up most of the area of the maps. Students can decide how they will split up the tasks in their own groups. The teacher will be available for help. The teacher will have several reference books for the students to use, and the pages will be marked so the students can easily find important material. We will discuss the importance of a glossary, index, and gazetteer.

Alliance of Idaho Geographers
Hits The Superhighway
With their pockets full of rocks and a car full of animal pelts, flowers, old photographs and maps, 28 teachers from throughout Idaho converged for the Annual Alliance of Idaho Geographers Conference. Their mission: To design an international, online resource documenting the diverse geographic regions in Idaho. Each year the Alliance of Idaho Geographers (AIG) holds a special training session for its regional directors and senior geography trainers. The Summer Institute focused this year on how to improve geographic education in Idaho against a backdrop of computer technology. Twenty-eight AIG members spent seven days in June in a computer lab at Boise's East Junior High exploring hypermedia and designing a new Internet resource for Idaho teachers. Led by Boise State University Educational Technology Outreach Program (BSUTOP) staff who took time off from work to help organize the conference, the teachers completed a rigorous training schedule of 12 hour days. They learned how to search the Internet, send/receive email, digitize video, record sound bytes, scan and manipulate images, and storyboard hypermedia presentations. The Alliance, under the direction of Dr. Katherine Young, consists of seven regions with a regional director overseeing activities in each region. Together with senior members of each region, the regional directors outlined an ambitious plan to illustrate Idaho geography through the development of seven inter-connected web sites.

Much of Idaho has an unspoiled beauty, with rugged slopes and towering peaks, a vast expanse of timberland, scenic lakes, wild rivers, cascades, and spectacular gorges. From the northern Panhandle, where Idaho is about 45 mi (72 km) wide, the state broadens south of the Bitterroot Range to 310 mi (499 km) in width. The Snake River flows in a great arc across S Idaho; with its tributaries the river has been harnessed to produce hydroelectric power and to reclaim vast areas of dry but fertile land. To the north of the Snake River valley, in central and north central Idaho, are the massive Sawtooth Mts. and the Salmon River Mts., which shelter magnificent wilderness areas, including the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness, the Selway Bitterroot Wilderness Area, and the Idaho Primitive Area. In the central and north central regions and in the Panhandle there are tremendous expanses of national forests covering approximately two fifths of the state and constituting one of the largest areas of national forests in the nation. Idaho's jagged granite peaks include Mt. Borah, which is 12,662 ft (3,859 m) high. Hells Canyon, which at one point is 7,900 ft (2408 m) below the mountaintops, is the deepest gorge in North America. The state also contains Craters of the Moon National Monument and a protected grove of ancient cedars at Upper Priest Lake.

Rushing rivers such as the Salmon and the Clearwater, and many lakes, notably Lake Pend Oreille, Lake Coeur d'Alene (often described as one of the world's loveliest), and Priest Lake, as well as the state's mountain areas, make Idaho a superb fish and game preserve and vacation land. The state is especially inviting to campers, anglers, and hunters (Idaho has one of the largest elk herds in the nation). The state's climate ranges from hot summers in the arid southern basins to cold, snowy winters in the high wilderness areas of central and northern Idaho. The capital and largest city is

Even farther west is the large Pacific Ocean. Across the mountains to the east are the states of Montana and Wyoming. Nevada and Utah are Idaho's southern neighbors. To the north is British Columbia, a province of Canada. Idaho's location makes it a Pacific Northwest state. Geography The thirteenth largest state (in size) is Idaho. The southern part of the state is a rectangle 316 miles, east to west, and 175 miles, north to south. The upper part is a narrowing panhandle 45 miles wide at the north end near British Columbia. Idaho's western border is divided between Washington and Oregon, which stretches 483 miles north to south. South of Idaho is Nevada and Utah. Finally, east of Idaho are the states of Wyoming and Montana. Idaho has three major land regions: the Rocky Mountains Region, the Columbia Plateau, and the Basin and Range Region, the largest being the Rocky Mountains Region. This region covers the panhandle and forms a bow down three-quarters of the state, and on the East, forming a strip along the Wyoming border. The region includes some of the most rugged areas in the United States. Parts of it can be explored only on foot or horseback. There are many plateaus, valleys, mountains, canyons, and gorges in the region. In these valleys, there are wheat and pea farms, with some hog and beef ranches.

    HISTORY MOMENTS
    For presentation on Monday/January 13, 2003
    • Boise County was created on January 12, 1863, by combining all of Washington Territory south and east of the Payette River and the Bitterroots. The county included most of what later was southern Idaho and a fourth of Wyoming. Idaho Geography was not well understood by Washington Territorial lawmakers in Olympia in those days. All the important Coeur d'Alene mines were shut down on January 16, 1892, because of adverse freight rates and the low price of silver. Cackling hens, crowing roosters, barking dogs and mewing cats inaugurated the 2 nd annual opening of the Idaho State Poultry and Pet Association meeting on January 13, 1902 in the YMCA building on the corner of 10 th and Main in Boise. Judge Weldon B. Heyburn was elected to the U.S. Senate on January 14, 1903. Judge Heyburn received the vote of every Republican in both houses. The Democrats voted solidly for James H. Hawley. The total - Heyburn, 50; Hawley, 11. On January 15, 1905, the Idaho Supreme Court ruled that cities cannot discriminate against women who patronize saloons provided they behave themselves. Cities were given power to prevent women from entering saloons for immoral purposes, but could not subject them to a fine if they visited bar rooms for a legitimate reason.
