FINANCIAL LITERACY COALITION EFFORTS REACH THOUSANDS IN IDAHO The Situation In 1996 bankruptcy and bad debts caused nearly $35.5 million in economic losses to Idaho providers of goods and services. As a result, prices of goods and services increased for all Idahoans. Consumer debt obligations have been growing twice as fast as wage and salary gains. Idaho ranks 12th in the nation in consumer debt. More than two-thirds of the nation's teens are worried about their financial futures and high school seniors frequently are unprepared for many of the critical financial decisions they need to make after graduation. In 1996 teens spent an estimated $109 billion. Teens, many of whom are unemployed, have access to more than 3.5 million credit cards. Our Response Achievements The University of Idaho Cooperative Extension System and the Idaho Financial Literacy Coalition in Boise are striving to improve financial practices by providing workshops and publications for the public, as well as classroom resources for teachers. Idaho Governor Phil Batt recognized the need for financial management education and the Idaho Financial Literacy Coalition efforts by proclaiming January 1997 "Financial Literacy Month."

To help meet the challenges facing today's agriculture, producers must have a high degree of management ability, including not only production management, but also management of their financial affairs. For the past six years, the University of Idaho Cooperative Extension System has been providing farm management training for over 200 local farm families. Return to Table of Contents Economic Independence Fund Awards $500,000 in Second Year The 18 grant recipients and their programs for 2001 are summarized here. This program will provide economic literacy education and counseling to low-income women, particularly those transitioning off welfare, with the goal of helping them take control of their personal finances and plan for the future. Seventy-five economic literacy personnel drawn from state and community action agencies throughout Vermont will be trained using funds from this grant. Within a year, these trainers are expected to directly benefit 3,750-7,000 low-income Vermonters by providing them with financial management education. Low-income residents of Pike County who have special needs related to money and credit management instruction and counseling will benefit from this grant. Targeted groups include youth, welfare-to-work, Head Start, and micro-enterprise individuals. An estimated 180 low-income families struggling to address financial and housing crises will receive money management training under this grant. The project will also train case managers to provide individual assistance to an estimated 300 families at risk of financial instability. This project aims to enhance the Texas State Emergency Shelter Grant Program by providing economic literacy education to homeless families and families at risk of becoming homeless. Existing curricula will be adapted to the needs of this audience, and volunteer instructors will be trained to present the program. Attendance at the program will be mandatory to receive emergency shelter grant funds.
