Thomas W. Christopher
Story
After 20 years as a professor of computer science, Thomas Christopher resigned to spend two years writing books. Having finished the second year of this project, he is pursuing his long-term love of supercomputing by consulting at Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque. For relaxation, he is a storyteller, contra dancer (and choreographer), and poet.
Books
This book teaches the Python programming language with a emphasis on how to use it to write larger programs. It describes and demonstrates over 20 object-oriented design patterns. It provides code for abstract container data types: doubly-ended queue, set, and priority queues. It has the best explanation of threading in Python of any current book. It explains the re module and the use of regular expressions in pattern matching. This book really kicks ass: There is enough in there to learn Python, files and processes in Linux, principles of networking, how to put together a home or small business network, how to set up Apache, how to write CGI programs, and how to use MySQL. It includes a working web-commerce application and a wiki system we're calling "slither" (hence the web site name). This book shows you how to use threads in Java. It provides a significant package of thread synchronization and scheduling classes for your use. It includes examples of a number of parallel algorithms showing different parallel programming styles. Reviewers are calling the book excellent, the "best of breed."

Click the JokePicker Chip and you're in control. Inside Funny Bits from Your Talking Chips you'll find 5 little joke-telling-and-laughing icons just waiting for you to tell them what to do. Do you want the Robotto to tell only knock-knocks using silly voices and demented laughter? This is the chip that will let you make it happen.
Icons unbuttoned
Some people like demented laughter (right, Igor?) and some don't. Some people live for puns, others think punsters should be expunged. With the Laugh and Joke Chips, you get a purely random selection of jokes and laughs. It's a quick way to sample Funny Bits From Your Talking Chips in all its full-bodied glory. The mustache-disguise Groucho icon goes for puns and insulting barbs. As you know if you like this kind of wordplay, a lot of the laughs you get in response are sarcastic or demented. Well, thatÕs what happens with this icon too. The Robotto icon uses weird computer voices When you drag some or all of your icons onto the desktop, you can get jokes and laughs at a moment's notice. If you double-click on an icon, it does its schtick and takes you back to the Finder.

    My main interest is programming.
For a couple of years I have been programming for OS/2 PM but in the spring of 1997 I switched to Linux an began programming on the Unix platform instead.
It is really enjoyable to program for Unix but I soon discovered that it was impossible to find a good, non-expensive (free) graphical user interface.
The need to edit setup files to manipulate the desktop items should not be found in a modern desktop environment. Then I found the KDE Project . The project consists of a lot of people around the world who are making a new user-friendly desktop environment.
KDE makes use of the QT toolkit which can be found at Troll Tech

    KDE Icon Editor
The KDE Icon Editor is a small graphics drawing program especially for creating icons using the standard KDE icon palette. It has most of the tools which are needed for easy creation of icons including: Line, Ellipse, Circle, Rectangle, Freehand, Eraser and Spraycan. More tools are planned but not fully implemented.
The latest version of the Icon Editor can be found here or at ftp.kde.org

    Date: 09/23/1999 06:05AM PST
    Answer Grade: A
    Points:
I think that I must be missing something basic about how Windows displays icons. My large 32x32 icon looks good but when Windows displays it as a 16x16 icon (as in the taskbar), it looks crappy because every other row of pixels is removed. I tried inserting a 16x16 icon as a New Device Image in the icon editor, but Windows did not want to display that icon. I thought that the code:
SetIcon(m_hIcon, TRUE); // Set big icon
SetIcon(m_hIcon, FALSE); // Set small icon would set the icons such that the 32x32 icon would get displayed for cases that call for 32x32 icons and the 16x16 icon would get displayed for cases that call for a 16x16 icon. Obviously, this assumption is wrong. How can I get Windows to display a nice 32x32 icon (such as in the desktop) and a nice 16x16 icon (such as in the taskbar)? Comment from Madshi 01/11/2003 05:15AM PST Have you tried using SHGetFileInfo? I don't remember why, but I have in memory that it worked better somehow. Perhaps it was because of the color depth, but I'm not sure anymore. Regards, Madshi.
