Ice Hockey
Hockey was first brought to North America when British soldiers stationed in Nova Scotia, Canada, played the earliest games. By the 1870s, a group of college students at McGill University in Montreal were organizing games and had developed the first known set of hockey rules. In accordance with this new set of regulations, known as the "McGill rules," a puck was substituted for a rubber ball and the number of players on a team was set at nine. The National Hockey League was formed in 1910; there are currently 30 clubs competing in the National Hockey League.

Grizzlies: Utah Builds Playoff Momentum
By Bretty Prettyman
The Salt Lake Tribune
If nothing else, Sunday's 3-2 overtime win against the Admirals at Milwaukee's Bradley Center sent the Utah Grizzlies into the AHL playoffs on a high note.
Despite a victory on the last day of the hockey season, the Grizzlies failed to move from the ninth spot in the Western Conference standings and will face the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in a best-of-three qualifying series beginning Thursday in Pennsylvania.
The Penguins landed in eighth Sunday after a come-from-behind overtime win that eliminated the Philadelphia Phantoms from the postseason.
Sunday's win also allowed the Grizzlies to exact a little payback against a team that had dominated them all season.
Utah (37-34-4-5) split two games against the Penguins (36-32-7-5) at the First Union Arena in Wilkes-Barre during the regular season, but finished the season series with a 3-1 advantage.

Olympian A.J. Mleczko leads the Crimson to a number-one ranking.
At the winter olympics in Nagano, Japan, the U.S. and Canadian women's ice hockey teams battled for the first Olympic gold medal ever awarded in their sport. The Canadians held a 7-6 edge from previous games, including all the world championships, and in the first-round encounter at Nagano, they seemed headed for another victory, going up 4-1 with only 11 minutes left. Then, stunningly, the U.S. women rained six unanswered goals into Canada's net for a jaw-dropping 7-4 victory, and went on to beat them again, 3-1, in the gold-medal game (see " Crimson and Gold on Ice May-June 1998, page 88). One of the victorious Americans, A.J. Mleczko '97 ('99), says, "What they did and what we did brought women's hockey to a new level."
