Fireworks explode over the doused Olympic flame at a grand finale. Salt Lake Bids Farewell
Salt Lake City said goodbye to the Olympics , sending the Games off with an upbeat display of lights, fireworks and rock 'n' roll. Bickering dominated the spotlight for most of the 17 days, but that's all right , writes Jim Caple. What else would you expect at a family reunion?

U.S. shatters medal goal

Now, it's Turin's turn

Canada ended 50 years of frustration Sunday, beating the United States 5-2 to win its first men's hockey gold in 50 years. Jarome Iginla and Joe Sakic each scored twice. Cross-country athletes Larissa Lazutina (Russia) and Johann Muehlegg (Spain) were stripped on their most recent gold medals after testing positive for darbepoetin. The French judge at the center of Skategate has changed her story again. She now says she was under pressure from Canada before voting for the Russian pair. It's no wonder that when Canada sent its best to face the USA's best, it brought an entire country inside to watch TV and

To start with, Magnus, the president at the time of foundation, replaced the acting president van den Bulcke, but he resigned immediately because the delegates did not follow his programme. Vice president Patton then moved up as president and immediately called new elections with the result that van den Bulcke once again became president and Patton himself vice president.
Just a few months later, World War I hit also the sports world. During the war, there were no LIHG activities, neither at the sports field nor in the administrative area.
After World War I, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) expelled the "war losers" Germany and Austria from their ranks. The LIHG followed this decision in 1920, and at the same time, the membership of Bohemia was transferred to the newly established Czechoslovakia (TCH).
At the LIHG congress which was held during that first Olympic ice hockey tournament, Canada and USA were admitted on 26 April 1920 as new members thus extending the federation beyond Europe. The LIHG leadership was totally replaced in Antwerp: Acting president was now the Swiss Max Sillig, who was at that time still actively playing, the two vice presidents were the Belgian. Paul Loicq and the American Frank Fellowes.
In 1929, the congress decided in Budapest to organize from 1930 world championships every year, whereby the best placed team from Europe should win the title of European champion.

Y ou know where you are when the crowd in the stadium spring to their feet and cheer while a javelin glides through the air still far from its landing site. The guys with the strong hands and rustic faces know to the nearest metre where it will come to earth. You could only be in Finland, where spectators have the deserved reputation of being the most knowledgeable in the world, particularly when it comes to track and field events. Of course, there are Finns who claim to be indifferent or just plain hostile towards sport but they would be regarded as folks with a pointless attitude problem. Most Finns love sport. Three out of four youngsters between the ages of three and eighteen say they practice some form of sport or voluntary physical recreation in addition to the compulsory dose they receive at school. N T he Finns, like any reasonable people, accept that some folk need folk heroes and they do not dismiss fondness for sport and its heroes as a symptom of immaturity. On the contrary, they generally see sport as a commendable form of human endeavour. This may be because in this small society top athletes of either gender tend not to behave like overpaid prima donnas. Even when they are overpaid they remain recognisable to the public as mortals, people who live next door. In the 1920s, the early years of Finnish independence, the dominant sporting hero was the long distance runner

Sports Campaign To Aid Buckeye Sports
The Ohio State University’s fiveyear, $1.23 billion “Affirm Thy Friendship” campaign, the Department of Athletics secured more than $138 million in private support. As a result of these efforts, Ohio State now boasts some of the finest competition and support facilities and numerous newly endowed scholarships. Success during this campaign has secured Ohio State’s place as not only the most comprehensive, but also one of the best and most financially stable athletics departments in the country. The Buckeyes have played host to NCAA regional baseball tournaments and have been selected to play host the men’s 2005 NCAA Frozen Four Ice Hockey Championship. However, there is much more to Ohio State athletics than football, baseball, basketball and hockey. Featuring 36 varsity sports with more than 1,000 participants, the department has led the way in creating opportunities. While Ohio State certainly is known around the country for its success on the football field and basketball court, it is less well known for its rich history of excellence in Olympic sports. The university has nurtured many notable athletes who went on to compete or coach in the Olympics. This year, the Ohio State Department of Athletics has launched the $45 million Buckeye Olympic Sports Campaign. The campaign will enable the Department of Athletics to partner with the Office of Student Affairs to secure private support for the project that will replace Larkins Hall, the student recreational center that is also utilized by the department of athletics.
