History Hungary came under the rule of the Ottoman Turks when the entire Hungarian Army, King Louis II Jagiello and the "flower of the Hungarian nobility" were wiped out at the Battle of Mohacs in August 1526. Hungary fought bravely against the Turks only to find themselves under the rule of the Austrians after that. A series of wars for independence over several centuries finally ended in the Great Compromise of 1867 for which the Austro-Hungarian Dual Monarchy was formed, with a great degree of self government for Hungary. However, this joy was short lived with the dismemberment of the country after WWI. After WWII, the country came under Soviet domination and only re-emerged as a democracy in recent years after the fall of communism. 4th World Jamboree Gödöllõ, Hungary, 1933 The 4th World Jamboree was hel at Gödöllö, Hungary in 1933. It was attended by over 26,000 Scouts representing 46 countries. Its setting was the great park at Gödöllö. It was notable for the excellent weather which was enjoyed and the assembled Scouts were thankful for the shade which the trees of the Royal Forest afforded. Scouts who attended this gathering remember particularly the sight of B.-P. making his rounds on the camp site on a magnificent brown charger. It was also most noticeable that the whole Hungarian nation had cooperated to make the event a success. The flourishing of the medieval Hungarian state The Árpád dynasty died out in 1301. The Anjou dynasty emerged triumphant from the rivalry between European dynasties, and snatched the Hungarian crown. During the rule of Károly /Charles/ I /1307-1342/ and Lajos /Louis/ the Great /1342-1382/, the two Hungarian kings from the Anjou dynasty, Hungary started to flourish again. By pursuing a healthy tax policy and monetary reform, and by more effectively exploiting the rich Hungarian mines, Charles I managed to consolidate his grip on power. In 1335 he called together the kings of Bohemia and Poland, and at the so-called "Visegrád summit" he established the first Central European alliance by initiating political and trade cooperation. The rule of the second Anjou king is memorable primarily due to his policy of conquests, reflecting the considerable strengthening of the country. As a result of the wars waged by "the knight king", Hungary's southern borders touched Bulgaria, the new Romanian principalities /Moldavia and Wallachia/ swore feudal allegiance, and Venice yielded Dalmatia. Hungary had grown to become a Central European great power, and it managed to retain that status up until 1490, the death of King Matthias. A cultural boom and the foundations of the first Hungarian university /Pécs, 1372/ bear witness to the fact that the Hungary of the Anjous flourished while Western Europe was in crisis. King Louis died without a male successor, and the country was stabilized only after years of anarchy when Sigismund of Luxembourg /1387-1437/ took the throne. It was not for entirely selfless reasons that one of the leagues of barons helped him to power: Sigismund had to pay for the support of the lords by transferring a sizable part of the royal properties, and the restoration of the authority of the central administration took decades of work. General History and Information About Budapest Today Budapest has one of Eastern Europe's largest Jewish communities. Situated on the east and west banks of the Danube River, Budapest is one of the largest and most beautiful cities of Eastern Europe. At one time the cocapital (with Vienna) of Austria-Hungary, it rivaled Vienna in the magnificence of its architecture and in its gracious way of life. The city is now the capital of Hungary. Budapest consists of two principal parts, which were merged in 1873: Buda, located on three hills and overlooking the west bank of the Danube River, and Pest, located on the opposite, lower, east bank. A railway tunnel and several bridgesthe first of which was built in 1849connect them. To the north the Danube splits into two channels around Margaret's Island (Margitsziget), which is a park. Buda is the older and more picturesque part. The central hillVarhegy, or Castle Hill, 554 feet (169 meters) highis the site of the old citadel (Var) and the royal palace. To the north of these buildings the old town developed, dominated by the Matthias Church, where many of Hungary's kings were crowned. To the south is Gellert Hill, almost 800 feet (245 meters) high and topped by Liberation Monument, which commemorates the city's capture from the Germans by Soviet forces in 1945. John's Hill at 1,736 feet (529 meters) is the highest of the Buda Hills west of the city. It has a chair lift to the summit that provides a panoramic view of Budapest.

Back to Modern History SourceBook Modern History Sourcebook: Hungary 1956 Statement of the Soviet Government, October 30, 1956 The Soviet Government regards it as indispensable to make a statement in connection with the events in Hungary. The course of the events has shown that the working people of Hungary, who have achieved great progress on the basis of their people's democratic order, correctly raise the question of the necessity of eliminating serious shortcomings in the field of economic building, the further raising of the material well-being of the population, and the struggle against bureaucratic excesses in the state apparatus. However, this just and progressive movement of the working people was soon joined by forces of black reaction and counterrevolution, which are trying to take advantage of the discontent of part of the working people to undermine the foundations of the people's democratic order in Hungary and to restore the old landlord and capitalist order. The Soviet Government and all the Soviet people deeply regret that the development of events in Hungary has led to bloodshed. On the request of the Hungarian People's Government the Soviet Government consented to the entry into Budapest of the Soviet Army units to assist the Hungarian People's Army and the Hungarian authorities to establish order in the town. Believing that the further presence of Soviet Army units in Hungary can serve as a cause for even greater deterioration of the situation, the Soviet Government has given instructions to its military command to withdraw the Soviet Army units from Budapest as soon as this is recognized as necessary by the Hungarian Government.

Links The history of Hungary in two pages Like all countries of the world, Hungary had many important battles, wars, revolutions, extraordinary men and women in its history. However to show you all of them, that would take another website, so here is a brief outline of what happened in the last two milleniums which shaped the country that is today: Hungary. The area where today Hungary lies has been inhabited for half a million years according to the findings. In the copper and bronze ages different folks lived here in tribes and they already used the fourwheel cart and they were familiar with the domestication of animals. In the first century AD Roman legions conquered the areas west of the Danube from the Celts, and made it their own province under the name of Pannonia. At this point the Danube was the border of the Roman Empire. In the next four hundred years they established a flourishing civilization that has left its traces in nearly all Transdanubian cities, and Budapest. The roman city, Aquincum can be seen as the predecessor of Budapest, of which the ruins can still be seen today. The empire of the Romans came to an end when the stronger army of the Huns attacked them in the 4th century AD and they withdrew to their southern territories. After the Huns several other tribes occupied the area, the Goths, Longobards and Avarians, among others, before the Hungarian settlers setlled down here permanently in the 9th century.

St. Elizabeth of Hungary (1207-1231) The Legend of Saint Elizabeth by Ruth Sawyer St Elizabeth is traditionally represented as dressed in rich clothes, bearing in her top skirt-which is gathered up at the front to form an apron-a profusion of red roses, while behind her back she holds a loaf of bread; these are the symbols of her life, her inherited position as Queen of Hungary, and the life she elected for herself of penance and asceticism. The contrast between the two callings is everywhere apparent in the twenty-four years which made up her life. Even before her wedding at the age of thirteen to the saintly Louis of Thuringia, she was marked out for suffering. Her mother-in-law tried to prevent the wedding out of jealousy and constantly mocked Elizabeth for her charity and humility. She said that she behaved 'like a tired old mule,' when she prostrated herself before the crucifix, and that she was totally unfitted to be Queen. Her mortification took the form of wearing the simplest clothes woven of coarse untreated wool and of eating as little as possible; she refused to wear her jewelled crown, when our Lord wore one of thorns. However, more important than these mortifications was her constant and remarkable charity, which was expressed in every detail of her life, inward and outward. When she was not actively engaged in the business of government she spent all her time either in prayer or visiting the poor and the sick, with the result that, after her husband's death in 1227, his family accused her of squandering the royal purse on the vagrants of the land.
