Hungary's first 1000 years
Y ellow trams rattling down grand boulevards, faded neo-Baroque interiors, facades marked with signs of revolution, streets of cobblestone, grand turn of the century apartment blocks. Like the bathers lingering in the steam of Budapest's famous baths, this is a country infused with memories and history.
H ungary celebrates a millennial double in the year 2000: the 1000th anniversary of the Hungarian State and the arrival of the new millennium. These thousand years have seen a tumultuous history in Hungary as rulers came and went and empires rose and fell, but Hungary's distinctive charms have never waned nor its welcome ever been less than genuine.
T he foundation was laid in the ninth century by the great Magyar chief, Árpád, who lead the people from paganism toward Christianity. On Christmas Day, 1000, Árpád's great grandson, Stephen ascended to the throne with a crown sent from Rome by Pope Sylvester II. The kingdom and nation of Hungary was born.
T he three hundred year reign of the House of Árpád saw the country become increasingly westward-looking and the succeeding House of Anjou brought expansion - into Poland, towards Dalmatia - and a great flowering of art and architecture. The first Golden Age had begun. Under King Matthias, ebrated for his fairness and justice, Hungary flourished, but his passing eventually led to decimation under the Ottomans for 150 years during the 16th and l7th-century. However, the Hapsburgs helped oust the Turkish, heralding a more stable time of reconstruction.

SCOUTING IN HUNGARY HUNGARIAN SCOUTS IN EXILE HUNGARIAN SCOUT ASSOCIATION Mr. Gabor Bodnar has led the Association since 1945. As a young Scoutmaster (25 at the time) he started organizing troops in Germany with several Scout friends (we refer to them collectively as the Countryless Eagles). He is still active as our General Secretary. His tireless work built the organization into what it is today. We who now are responsible for carrying forward this work owe him an eternal debt of gratitude for his work and sacrifice. Typically, we have a Boy Scout and Girl Guide troop in most cities that have substantial Hungarian populations. We are either closely affiliated or actually operate most Hungarian weekend schools around the world. We held celebrations of our 50th anniversary and had Jamborees in the USA (Fillmore, NY), Europe (Germany), and Australia (near Melbourne). Our South American troops will hold their Jamboree late in 1996. We base on our work on carrying out our obligations at four levels (God, our adopted countries, our fellowman and the Hungarian nation). Our ties are close not only with the Hungarian Scouts Association (in Hungary), but with the Hungarian Scout Associations in Slovakia, Subcarpathian-Ukraine, Romania, and Yugoslavia. Each of these countries has significant Hungarian minorities who have re-established the Scouting movement. Since the advent of democracy (1988) we have trained almost 500 scoutmasters and assistant scoutmasters for these brother associations.

    Communist Takeover
The provisional government, dominated by the Hungarian Communist Party (MKP), was replaced in November 1945 after elections which gave majority control of a coalition government to the Independent Smallholders' Party. The government instituted a radical land reform and gradually nationalized mines, electric plants, heavy industries, and some large banks. The communists ultimately undermined the coalition regime by discrediting leaders of rival parties and through terror, blackmail, and framed trials. In elections tainted by fraud in 1947, the leftist bloc gained control of the government. Postwar cooperation between the U.S.S.R. and the West collapsed, and the Cold War began. With Soviet support, Moscow-trained Matyas Rakosi began to establish a communist dictatorship.
By February 1949, all opposition parties had been forced to merge with the MKP to form the Hungarian Workers' Party. In 1949, the communists held a single-list election and adopted a Soviet-style constitution which created the Hungarian People's Republic. Rakosi became Prime Minister in 1952. Between 1948 and 1953, the Hungarian economy was reorganized according to the Soviet model. In 1949, the country joined the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance (CMEA, or Comecon), a Soviet-bloc economic organization. All private industrial firms with more than 10 employees were nationalized. Freedom of the press, religion, and assembly were strictly curtailed. The head of the Roman Catholic Church, Cardinal Jozsef Mindszenty, was sentenced to life imprisonment.

Until 1918 it was part of Austria-Hungary and was three-and-one-half times its present size, including sections of present-day Romania, Croatia, Slovakia, and Ukraine. Hungary was a one-party Communist state ((((forced to be by the bloody russian red army)))) from 1948 to 1989, when it adopted a multiparty, democratic form of government.

    History, Culture, Psychology
Raphael Patai The Jews of Hungary is the first comprehensive history in any language of the unique Jewish community that has lived in the Carpathian Basin for 18 centuries, from Roman times to the present. Noted historian and anthropologist Raphael Patai, himself a native of Hungary, tells in this pioneering study the fascinating story of the struggles, achievements, and setbacks that marked the flow of history for the Hungarian Jews. He traces their seminal role in Hungarian politics, finance, industry, science, medicine, arts, and literature, and their surprisingly rich contributions to Jewish scholarship and religious leadership both inside Hungary and in the Western world.
Patai also shows that in the Hungarian Jewish culture a specific set of psychological motivations had a highly significant function. Hungarian Jews remained convinced that they were 100% Hungarians, differing in nothing but denominational variation from the Catholic and Protestant Hungarians. "In
