Sifting through the first decade of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet by Lawrence Adams Among many papers in a file, I came across the following. Origin unknown. It fitted perfectly into my ponderings on the beginnings of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. Most fossils that have been found in caves come from layered deposits in the floors. The layers are not all the same. Some consist of rubbish that the cave dwellers have left there, trampling it down, pushing it aside: bones of animals that have been eaten and flung into corners, mixed with flaked stone tools, antlers, traces of charcoal from long-dead fires, bits of fossilized excrement containing the crunched bones of mice and shrews all whispering of past human habitation. "Throwaway" is the word man uses for his culture today. Throwaway it has always been. The habitation layer, with its bones and artifacts, is of course, the layer that will contain human fossils if there are any in the cave. Many layers contain no bones at all. They represent periods when the cave was uninhabited, times when nothing but blown-in dust settled and solidified on the cave floor. It may have piled many feet deep, indicating a change in the climate that may have forced people out of the region entirely for tens of thousands of years. That ebb and flow of humanity may be traced by the presence of a second habitation floor higher up, followed by another exodus. The layer-cake analogy returns: a fossil horizon, a dust horizon one on top of another. The archeologist has only to do his homework conscientiously, noting the position of everything as he digs deeper, to reconstruct the history of that cave.

Major Issues and Trends: Goals 4-6
Goal #4
U.S. students will be first in the world in science and mathematics achievement. This goal is of particular importance to the U.S. business community since it addresses those skills most needed in the work place. Perhaps for this reason, this Goal is stated exclusively in terms of international competition, since more and more corporations are beginning to understand their mission in terms of a global market. Given the current need for highly trained scientists and technicians, and given the fact that 80 percent of the work force for the year 2000 is already on the job, it is small wonder that business leaders are concerned about the performance of U.S. students on international comparative tests in science and mathematics. According to a report by the National Center for Education Statistics, in 1990, U.S. students faced significant problems in these crucial areas. Researchers found inadequacies both in instruction and in student attitude.
  • In 1990, most students were not receiving the kinds of instruction needed to apply science ideas outside of the classroom, and many teachers did not have adequate facilities or supplies to pursue these types of instruction. Only 56 percent of 8th-grade teachers reported that they had adequate laboratory facilities or were well-supplied with instructional materials and resources. Only 46 percent say they have gone beyond the textbook in determining what they are to teach.

The 1936 Olympic Games in Germany
by Arvo Vercamer and Jason Pipes
The saga of the 1936 Olympic games began on 26 May 1930. This was when the German Olympic Committee met with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in Berlin to petition for the hosting rights to XI Olympic games; other applicant cities were Barcelona, Istanbul, Frankfurt am Main, and Nürnberg. Of note is that Berlin was supposed to host the games in 1916, but these were cancelled due to WWI.
The German Olympic Committee organizers and planners did their homework well. When it was their turn to address the IOC, the Germans made an excellent case for showing that Berlin was in the heart of Europe - the city was accessible to everyone by air, by land and even by sea (via a number of German and other European port cities). To further increase their chances of being awarded the games, the German Olympic Committee showed the IOC preliminary development and construction plans as to how Berlin intended to host the games and how Germany would have regulation sports facilities available for all competitions.
On 25 April 1931, almost a year later, the IOC met in Barcelona, Spain, to render its decision. German Olympic committee members were there too. To further increase their chances, the German delegates in Barcelona made a few last minute pitches as well; one of them being that Germany would like another chance to host the games because the 1916 games in Berlin were cancelled.

1. General Report All in all, the three subgroups worked well side by side and benefited from discussions with the members of other subgroups, proving that more than one subject can be in focus during an academic year. The natural scientists once again delivered what they had promised. 2. Personal Report 1996Ð97 Besides being the convenor of the natural sciences focus group this year, I have dealt with a number of issues concerning evolutionary and ecological problems, and also with some problems of life in the Universe. Other works have dealt with problems of early evolution. A renewed account of the first major evolutionary transitions (from the origin of replicators to the origin of protocells and chromosomes) was accepted (4), and a News and Views account of a Gothenburg meeting with a similar topic was published (3). We have analysed an intriguing problem of surface-bound primordial evolution: the dynamics of templates catalysing metabolic reactions on a surface. The applied two-dimensional model is a novel combination of cellular automata (for the macromolecules) and reaction-diffusion algorithms (for the metabolic intermediates); simulations are still in progress (7). Problems and selection consequences of parabolically replicating systems have been re-analysed. We managed to derive a Lyapunov function for parabolic competition (thus proving global asymptotic stability of coexistence, Ref. 5) and we plan to summarise all the major conceptual findings arrived at so far (9).

1.1 Language and Communication
This small-scale project made use of internet tools, combining different skills: searching for information, reading for gist and specific information, writing, and oral discussion of the ingredients of a good holiday. To show what underpinning theoretical background supports this type of activity I will present an overview of language and communication. I will first examine what it means to "know and speak a language". There are several factors we have to account for in answering this question. We must consider three main variables: grammatical competence, communicative competence, and language proficiency. The main exponent of grammatical competence is the linguist Chomsky (1968), who believed that knowing a language is tantamount to knowing "one's grammar," that is, the ability to form and comprehend "grammatically correct" utterances. Grammatical competence has to do with rules stipulating correct usage, formulation and construction of words and phrases by creating propositions. A teacher adhering to a strict grammar-oriented approach to FL teaching is likely to devote a lot of time to grammatical rules, describing language in terms of tenses, syntax, semantics, and lexis, and prescribing correct usage, although everyday experience does not always support the efficacy of this approach.
