Dictionary of computer jargon

Miscellaneous info on the Web
Want to make a website? It's not difficult. You can learn the basics pretty quickly, and that's what I'm going to show you. You don't need any special software, you don't need to go on a course : in fact you don't need to spend any money at all. All you need is a computer (practically anything will do), an internet connection (which presumably you already have, or else how are you looking at this page?), a browser (ditto), and a basic text editor like Windows Notepad. That's it! You're ready to go. I'm not going to try and teach you everything, just what you need to get a decent website up and running, with the emphasis very much on doing things the easy way - the "It still counts as a goal if it goes in off your bottom" approach. I'll try not to use jargon, but if I do say something you aren't sure about, you can look it up in my Dictionary of computer jargon . If you aren't too sure of yourself in Windows, have a look at

A Beginner's Guide to HTML
This is a primer for producing documents in HTML, the markup language used by the World Wide Web.
  • Acronym expansion - the World Wide Web alphabet soup
  • The minimal HTML document
    Introduction
    Acronym expansion
    WWW
    World Wide Web
    SGML
Standard Generalized Markup Language - This is perhaps best be thought of as a programming language for style sheets.
    DTD
Document Type Definition - This is a specific implementation of document description using SGML. One way to think about this is: Fortran is to a computer program as SGML is to a DTD.
    HTML
HyperText Markup Language - HTML is a SGML DTD. In practical terms, HTML is a collection of styles used to define the various components of a World Wide Web document.
    What this primer doesn't cover
This primer assumes that you have:
    • at least a passing knowledge of how to use NCSA Mosaic or other WWW browser
    • a general understanding of how World Wide Web servers and client browsers work and
    • access to a World Wide Web server for which you would now like to produce HTML documents
    Creating HTML documents
HTML documents are in plain text format and can be created using any text editor (e.g., Emacs or vi on Unix machines). A couple of WWW browsers (tkWWW for X Window System machines and CERN's WWW browser for the NeXT) do include rudimentary HTML editors in a WYSIWYG environment, and you may want to try one of them first before delving into the details of HTML.

The Gurus Network. A network of gurus . It started as a dream, and perhaps it always *will* be a dream, but now it's a dream that has been given life. Welcome to our dream! The Gurus Network is a collaborative effort, designed and produced by one of the biggest and best collection of lunatics I've ever had the honor of knowing. Not everyone you meet here will be officially in "guru" class yet, but they will be. We are all working towards the same end, a full and proper sharing of knowledge, experience, technique and inspiration. A willingness to dream is the only requirment for membership. Our associate members are typically webmasters of their own domains; they participate here because it's a fun place to be - this is just another way of sharing what they know. You don't need to be a full member to benefit from this site, the Network is built on a philosophy of sharing. Have fun! We certainly plan to. Your pals, -the Gurus- What's new at the GurusNetwork?

Short, focused tutorial that concentrates on the needs of the absolute beginner.
    http://www.carnall.demon.co.uk/how_to_learn_html.htm
    how to learn html
HTML stands for hypertext markup language. It's the language of the web. Learning it will empower you to publish your stuff on the web. It's easy to let the best be the enemy of the good. Even with something as straightforward to learn as HTML, many tutorials overload the beginner. The aim of this tutorial is to teach the bare minimum that you need to make web pages as quickly and easily as possible. The tutorial assumes basic competence with standard PC software like Windows or the Mac, but assumptions are dangerous things. Run through the tutorial here , if you're new to computers.
    Lesson 1
Try this: 1) get a text editor: Notepad (windows) SimpleText (mac), whatever. 2) Type "Already I am an HTML genius" 3) Save the file as genius.htm 4) Launch your web browser and use the open command on the file menu to open genius.htm 5) It all just goes on from there really. It's simply a matter of learning a few codes and using a text editor, e.g. BBEdit
    Lesson 2
    false friends
That's fine if you just want to put a flat page up somewhere, but if you want to make links and otherwise control your page you're going to have to understand a little more. So read on. WYSIWYG = What you see is what you get

If you want to get your own customized website report and start getting more traffic and earning more money please take a look at our website report page Before we learn HTML, you will need to know what it is. HTML stands for HyperText Markup Language.
Basically HTML is a system of coding for internet pages
We start out a normal HTML page with the simple tag
You need to know a page consists of 2 parts : 1 the head and secondly the body. The head is the non visible data for your page but which you can manipulate to fool the search-engines or get a better ranking., Also your title is mentionned here.
Notice the "/" before the second usage of "title". This "/" tells the browser that this is the end of the page's title. Almost every tag uses one and you shouldn't forget this otherwise your page won't appear as you want it to appear.

Well, despite looking complicated, html is easy to learn. In fact it is easier to figure out then those html editors which supposedly let you design the webpage as you see it (called WYSIWYG: What You See Is What You Get). I don't think so. Unless you know some html those editors are a real pain to use. So follow along in these lessons as I explain what I've learned while trying to build my web site. Hey, where ya going? I may not be a pro but I'll have you making web pages in no time so stick around. Getting down to business All you need to make a webpage is a browser so you can see the masterpiece you've created, and a simple word processor such as Notepad.Yup, Notepad, even for nice fancy pancy web pages. I don't know what you Macheads use but it's probably something similar so follow along.
