The Charlotte Checkers are a minor-league professional hockey team in the East Coast Hockey League. They play in (you guessed it) Charlotte, NC. The librarian and the hockey fan in me have combined to create a page containing links to all the Checkers information on the web. This page contains complete descriptions of each site or other resource, and is organized by site. If you would like to see these links organized by type of information - i.e. you go to "scores" and get a list of sites that have Checkers scores - please go to my "alternate organization" page! THE OFFICIAL CHECKERS PAGE This page has all the basic information - schedules, stats, roster, player bios with pictures, team history, promotions calendar, merchandise (you can shop online!), ticket info, and more. There are game recaps after every game, news about trades and injuries and such, and all of those are archived. You can listen live to games, answer the fan poll, chat with other fans in the chatroom, or post on the message board. Dave Kindred The Sporting News Elected NFL commissioner in 1960, Pete Rozelle served until his reluctantly accepted retirement in 1989. Of the several measures of his enduring effectiveness, we might first note that seven U.S. presidents came and went in Rozelle's time. Baseball, hockey and basketball had 12 commissioners. It would be a tolerable stretch to say neither the nation nor the other games fared as well with their 19 men as football did with its one. So Rozelle's tenure is No. 4 on my list of the Five Most Significant Developments of 20th century sports.

    Shivers gets green Christmas
(Calgary) - Calgary Stampeder General Manager and Head Coach Wally Buono today confirmed that long-time Stampeder Assistant General Manager and Director of Player Personnel Roy Shivers is leaving the 1999 Western Division Champion team to become the General Manager of the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
"The entire Stampeder organization would like to congratulate Roy on his appointment as General Manager of the Saskatchewan Roughriders. I personally would like to thank Roy for his dedication and assistance in making our organization one of the CFL powers in the decade of the nineties. He will be missed, but it shows the strength and the respect that our organization has established in the CFL. Our goal is to continue with the same infrastructure that has been our model in the past. My search to replace Roy will begin immediately" stated Wally Buono
Current Stampeder players slotback Allen Pitts, linebacker Alondra Johnson, cornerback William Hampton, running backs Kelvin Anderson and Rock Preston, cornerback Marvin Coleman and rover Daryl Hall were all Roy Shiver recruits. Most recently quarterback Mike McCoy and defensive back Shadwick Criss were diamonds in the rough that were brought to Canada by the talented Roy Shivers.

    Ford steps down
Today Alan Ford advised the Club of his intention to step down as the Saskatchewan Roughriders' General Manager.
Alan Ford spent 28 years in the Roughrider organization as a Player, Coach, Administrative Assistant, Director of Canadian Player Development, Assistant General Manager, General Manager and Chief Operating Officer.
During his 11 years as the Roughriders' General Manager, the Green and White made the playoffs six times, won two Western Finals and appeared in two Grey Cups, winning in 1989. Ford is also the only person who has, as an employee, been part of both Saskatchewan Roughrider Grey Cup Championships (1966 as a player and 1989 as the General Manager).
During his media conference, Alan Ford stated, "I consider myself very fortunate to have had the chance to do something I love for so long. The Saskatchewan Roughrider Football Club has a proud history and I hope I have made some contribution to that."

Richard Dean Anderson was born on January 23, 1950, in Minnesota. All through his high school years, his goal was to become a professional hockey player. Fortunately for us RDA fans, that did not work out, and upon graduating high school, he attended St. Cloud College and Ohio University, to study drama. Anderson got his first big break in 1976, when he got the role of Dr. Jeff Webber on General Hospital. In 1985 came his most memorable character to date, MacGyver. MacGyver went on for seven seasons, before it came to an end in 1992. Shortly after Anderson signed on to another show entitled Legend. Unfortunately it only lasted one season, and was gone. At present Anderson is playing Colonel Jack O'Neill in the Stargate SG-1 series. He took over the role that Kurt Russell portrayed in the feature film, and added a new comedic twist to the characters personality. I've really enjoyed Anderson's version of O'Neill very much!. Ten years later Tyler has played many other sports but the speed, intensity and camaraderie of lacrosse has focussed all his attention on the game. The 18-year-old Victoria native is an attack specialist with a lot of family history tied up in lacrosse. In addition to a brother (Nolan) who plays, Tyler's father referees, coaches and manages the Junior Shamrocks. "It's my family's life," says Tyler, "my grandfather is strongly traditionally native and playing the game is a great way to touch my family roots." As to the prospect of playing in the 1999 World Championships, Tyler is excited at the thought of travelling, playing against his heroes in the sport, and representing his country.
