Job Postings Changing Griers The Oilers knew it would be tough to move the likeable Mike Grier, but in this business, you have to check your emotions at the door. (posted Oct. 10, 2:24PM EDT) Kevin Lowe called it the hardest trade he’s had to make and don't forget he had to deal away Doug Weight. The Oilers' general manager has had to move popular players before, but nothing quite compared to shipping Mike Grier to Washington for conditional second and third round picks from next summer’s entry draft. The move was necessitated for one reason, but with two angles on it both being numbers. The Oilers had too many forwards and when Marty Reasoner wasn’t picked up in the waiver draft, that left Edmonton with an excess up front. The other number and Lowe admitted this was the $1.48 million that Grier was slated to make this year. Too many forwards and too much money equals trade.

Job Postings Sutter bringing wins, hope to Flames The move to bring in Darryl Sutter as Calgary's new head coach has paid instant dividends not to mention the return of the 'real' Jarome Iginla. (posted Jan. 9, 1:18PM EST) Perhaps patience really is a virtue. Consider the Calgary Flames who, as we all know, took upwards of a month to find a new head coach. Actually, they had identified Darryl Sutter as the guy far earlier, but for an assortment of reasons, it took a while to close the deal and officially get him behind the bench. Despite criticism for taking so long, including some from this corner, the Flames were able to manage fairly well under interim coach Al MacNeil and have seemingly emerged with the right full-time man, at least according to the early returns. Heading into Thursday night, the Flames had won three-straight for the first time this season and were 4-0-1 under Sutter.

Last College: Virginia, '83 Position: Head Coach Birthdate: Experience: 7th season George Gelnovatch, a former Cavalier soccer All-American and assistant coach, enters his seventh season as the head coach at UVa. Gelnovatch, 37, was named the 10th coach of the Virginia program on January 3, 1996, after Bruce Arena announced he would end his 18-year career at the helm of UVa soccer to become head coach and assistant general manager of Major League Soccer’s D.C. United. Gelnovatch has led UVa to an overall record of 99-28-12 (.755), an ACC title and six NCAA Tournament appearances in his six seasons as head coach. With 16 victories in 1998, he became the first coach in Atlantic Coast Conference history to reach the 50-win mark in only three seasons. Last season (2001), Gelnovatch guided UVa to its first undefeated regular season since 1986 after going 16-0-1 overall, 6-0-0 in the ACC. More impressive than going undefeated in the conference, the Cavaliers became the first ACC team ever to go undefeated in the conference after winning all of its games by shutout. Gelnovatch was named the 2001 ACC Coach of the Year and the 2001 VaSID Coach of the Year. He was honored as the state of Virginia’s Division I Men’s Coach of the Year in 1998 and earned ACC Coach of the Year recognition in 1996. In 1998, Gelnovatch had two players named as finalists for the MAC Award and two players named finalists for the Hermann Trophy.

Debbie Ryan Hometown:
Titusville, N.J.
High School:
Hopewell Valley
Last College: Ursinus '75 Position: Head Coach Year at Virginia: 561-210 (25 yrs.) Career and Virginia Record Consistency is the mark of a winner. In her 25 years at the helm of the University of Virginia women?s basketball program, Debbie Ryan has averaged 22.4 wins per season. She has recorded 20 or more wins in a season 18 times and 30 or more twice. In 2002, she guided her youthful Cavaliers to their 19th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. Ryan is the architect behind UVa?s rise to prominence in the 1990s, and she has maintained that level of excellence. No other team in the ACC has been ranked in the AP and USA Today polls more total weeks or consecutive weeks than the Cavaliers. And only a few teams across the nation can match the level of success that the Cavaliers have experienced in NCAA competition. Her teams have been to 19 consecutive NCAA Tournaments, second only to Tennessee and Louisiana Tech. She directed UVa to three consecutive Final Four appearances in the 1990s and has consistently had the Cavaliers in contention for a national title. In 1999, Ryan distinguished herself further by joining an elite group of coaches who have won 500 games at the Division I level. With the win over Florida State on Feb. 21, 1999, Ryan reached the 500 victory milestone. At that time, only five other coaches in Division I had attained 500 wins at one school: Pat Summit (Tennessee), Jody Conradt (Texas), Kay Yow (N.C. State), Mike Granelli (St. Peter?s), and Marian Washington (Kansas). When she won her 450th career game on Jan. 11, 1997 at N.C. State, she reached the 450-win milestone in only her 600th game, faster than any other men?s or women?s coach in the Atlantic Coast Conference. She was the first ACC coach to record 200 wins in league competition. In conference action, Ryan has a record of 242-93.
