About Us Appeals News ... Link to Us PAST INTERNATIONAL PROJECTS Seals in Canada
CFTWI has been involved with seal protection for more than ten years. Our Chairman investigated the killing of Harp Seal Pups in Canada in 1978 and his report on the suffering caused was debated in the European Parliament, which eventually banned the importation of harp seal pups skins into Europe. Elephant re-location, Zimbabwe
In 1993, Care for the Wild International launched and funded the largest elephant relocation project the world has ever seen by transporting over 500 elephants in whole family groups from Gonarezhou National Park to the Save Valley Conservancy some 250km away. This project was carried out by Clem Coetsee, a wildlife management expert in Zimbabwe. Today this project still stands as the largest elephant relocation in Africa. Operation Fix-it in Zambia
in 1996 CFTWI launched Operation Fix-it to assist the the Zambian National Parks. We were initially asked to purchase vehicles for parks but decided it would be far better to fix all the vehicles that had broken down. Once we had raised the money we sent all the spare parts, together with two mechanics, to Zambia. Our mechanics assisted the local mechanics and ran a night school for them in the evenings. Akim Mwenya, the director of Zambian National Parks said of the project:

If you want to win the game you've got to think of the name and catch the most marbles with your hippo...

thomcatspike: that is exactly what I thought... I hope someone tells the squatters.
Aside from that, it's pretty cool! Wonder if they'll settle into a vacancy in the ecosystem, or wreak havoc (read kudzu in Georgia, or mice in Australia).

"Hippos Roam Colombian Drug Lord's Abandoned Ranch. "
I swear to God I thought that said "Hippies", and my first reaction was "Well, duh !" posted by at 3:44 PM PST on January 30 I read this story about a week ago, but it is none the less facinating. The one aspect not brought up is the *real* reason Escobar had these animals on his ranch: essentially, since smaller animals (i.e., drug-sniffing dogs) are naturally wary of larger animals (i.e., hippos, elephants, lions, etc), they would pack some of these beasts' dung in with the the cocaine shipments. If/when drug-sniffing dogs got near, they would shy away and not alert their handlers to the presence of cocaine. Also, for a interesting read on Pablo Escobar, I'd highly recommend checking out

All About : Hippo's -
Hippopotamuses (Hippopotamus amphibius) belong to the family Hippopotamidae and the order Artiodactyla. The name hippopotamus (meaning "river horse") is fitting as these animals are chiefly aquatic herbivores. The hippopotamus, is the third-largest living land mammal, after elephants and white rhinos. The hippo is an amphibious animal with a bulky body supported by strong short legs. Each foot has four webbed toes that can support the huge creatures on land and in water. The thick skin is grey to brown in colour and is almost completely hairless. Hippos have glands that produce a viscous red fluid that is produced when the animal is excited, the reason the fluid is produced is not fully known. The thick hides of hippo protect them from the cold but are the skin is vulnerable to sunburn. There are two species of hippo found in Africa, the large hippos are found south of the Sahara in numbers that often require cropping or culling. This is done to control populations that become larger than the habitat can sustain. The other species is a Forrest dweller ( pygmy hippo) restricted to West Africa, this species is now sadly rare. The larger species is a dangerous aggressive animal equipped with huge teeth. The teeth are sharp tusklike canines that cause terrible wounds when hippos fight and can easily crush a canoe or crocodile. Hippos swim easily in water and can even walk on the river bed with ease. The hippo is well equipped for an aquatic life with its ears, eyes and nostrils set high on their heads. The ears and nostrils can be closed when diving underwater, the animals can stay underwater in excess of five minutes at a time.

Talk tigers and most locals automatically think of the Zambezi River and its impoundments such as Kariba and Cabora Bassa. It's not as widely known that South Africa has its own tigerfish populations in the Incomati River System at Komatipoort and in the Pongola system in Kwa-Zulu Natal. These tigerfish populations are however limited in size and as such are in urgent need of protection. Recognizing this FOSAF (The Federation of Southern African Flyfishers) has launched a Tigerfish Working Group whose aim is to boost the awareness of tigerfish and the importance of wisely managed conservation practices. Based on the successes of its Yellowfish Working Group, the new FOSAF Tigerfish Working Group will provide guidelines and initiate projects for the protection and conservation of this legendary African gamefish.
The Komati River offers exciting opportunities for taking tigers on Fly
Tigerfish are not only one of the fastest and most aggressive freshwater fish on earth but also one of the most challenging to catch on fly. Exciting opportunities for taking tigers on fly exist in the Komati River in the vicinity of Komatipoort. Local fisherman occasionally report landing tigers of over 6kg. According to local Komatipoort fly fishing expert, Domien van Buynder, tigerfish are probably one of the most challenging fish to catch on a fly. His personal best for the Komati River is a whopping 5.5kg.

Tian Tian and Mei Xiang had traveled in individual crates, which were now placed in their new home. The crates were opened, and the pandas slowly began to explore.
Tian Tian (Photo: Jessie Cohen/Smithsonian National Zoo) A year later, she moved to Raleigh, N.C., to participate in what was at the time a brand-new three-year residency program in zoological medicine, administered by North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine and the North Carolina State Zoological Park. Upon completion of the program, she became the first veterinarian to complete a residency, qualify and pass the board certification examination in zoological medicine within the same year. She is one of only about 50 board-certified zoo veterinarians in the country. Then she moved again, this time to care for the 3,500 animals at the 163-acre National Zoo, first as an associate veterinarian and then, in September 1999, as head veterinarian. Spelman said she loves all facets of her job, although several have little to do with her veterinary training, like marketing, fund-raising, personnel management and finances. Spelman acknowledges that her learning curve has been steep, but that teamwork is the key.

A wet and wild African escapade Emily Cheah is a fun-loving 13-year-old who spends most of her time trying to find ways to minimise studying and the only writing she normally does is for school assignments. But after her escapade to Africa, she feels she wants to tell the world about her holiday. She lives in Petaling Jaya with a large assortment of fish, parrots, birds, dogs and miscellaneous humans. By Emily Cheah
I almost could not believe I was going to Africa. Sure, my mother kept showing me pictures of the places she had booked weeks before the flight. It never hit me that I was in Africa until the plane touched down and my journey into the Dark Continent officially began. I resolved to capture as much of the memories as possible in my head and also with the handy digital camera that I was given as the official photographer for the family. I didn’t keep a journal but after coming home, I decided to pen down my thoughts on my most memorable holiday ever… Day of arrival: Oh, don’t worry… I don’t freeze to death yet. That’s why I’m still here and writing this. We wait around in Johannesburg International Airport for three hours. In the meantime, I witness my first ever African sunrise. Seriously! It looks like the one in the Lion King! It’s gorgeous! Even if you are sitting in the middle of an airport. I tried to take pictures of it but proved hard with all the solid steel holding the building up they had in the way and the glass which was a barrier. In the end I settled for a Malaysia Airlines advertisement… I took the perfect picture. The wing of an MAS plane with its logo on it in next to the orangey rising sun.

"The dramatic sight of cape buffalo thundering toward you is a humbling experience, to say the least. The sound of their plate-sized hooves pounding the dry, parched African soil mimics the power of a thunderstorm overtaking everything in its path."
Out of Africa Collection: "Cheetah Watch"
Speed! The cheetah is the fastest land animal on earth. Unlike other big cats, the cheetah does not stalk its prey; it chases after the prey and runs it down. It is able to reach speeds of 70 miles per hour, in just a few seconds – something most racecar drivers can't do! The cheetah prefers to hunt in open savannah where its speed can be of used to the best advantage.
Out of Africa Collection: "Confrontation"
Hippos are considered the most dangerous animal in Africa. They are very territorial and have little tolerance for intruders. Spending hours grazing at night on shore, hippos return to the water during the heat of the day and always large bulls claiming the best spots. This old bull was kicked out of the main pod and found a small waterhole, which he quickly claimed as his own, and was not about to let an artist interrupt his plans.
Out of Africa Collection: "Clash of the Titans" Giraffe are thought of as peaceful almost passive creatures but like all wild animals they possess the ability to display tremendous aggression in a moments notice. What I've always enjoyed about Africa is that one must constantly prepare for the unexpected.

Physical Description : Bulky and barrel-shaped, Nile hippos may look clumsy, but they are supremely adapted to their mixed terrestrial/aquatic lifestyle. Their eyes, ears, and nostrils (which close when the animals submerge) sit atop their heads. They have wide snouts and thick lips for grazing terrestrial grasses. Hippos vary from brown to grayish purple, with pink underparts and skin creases. Their skin consists of a thick dermis (up to 1-3/4 inches thick) covered by thin epidermis that is protected by a red excretion that serves as sunscreen and probably as a disinfectant. Hippos are virtually hairless, with bristles only on their noses, ears, and tails.
