Introduction
A lmost every informational account of the hippopotamus makes some mention of the animal's violent temper. Various writers have described the hippo as "ill-tempered," "dangerous to man," and "wantonly malicious." But is this reputation deserved? There is no doubt that the hippopotamus is capable of serious damage and violence. Hippos will stand up to lions and have been known to bite full-grown crocodiles in half. Countless African natives have lost their lives when the boats they were traveling in were attacked by hippos. By some accounts, hippos cause more human deaths than any other wild creature in Africa, including lions and elephants. But the question remains: Is the hippo violent by nature or merely territorial? Dominant male hippos will defend their territories fiercely, and female hippos will attack any creature that threatens their young. In this regard, however, are they behaving any differently than numerous other wild species? Below is a list of quotes from various authors which address the issue of the hippo's innate temperament. I will allow you to draw your own conclusions.

From marching brooms to dancing hippos
Why 1940 was a great year for Walt Disney Walt Disney's first animated feature film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), was rapturously received. In the following years, Walt worked on several more animated projects simultaneously and moved to larger studios at Burbank, California, where the Disney company is still based. Now, on the occasion of Walt's centenary, we take a look at one amazing year in his life - Within nine months of 1940, two full-length Disney animation films were released in cinemas. Pinocchio , based on the story by Carlo Collodi, led the way. The designers based the film characters on clay and wooden models, and were also inspired by actors photographed in costumes. In the finished film, kindly old Geppetto is joined by Jiminy ('When You Wish Upon A Star') Cricket and Monstro the whale, as well as Pinocchio, the little puppet who dreams of being a real boy. Then came Fantasia , even more bold and original. This was first conceived as a short film - of which Walt had already produced many examples - with Mickey Mouse acting out

Swahili Name: Kiboko Scientific Name: Hippopotamus amphibius Size: 13 feet long and 5 feet tall Weight: Up to 3 tons Lifespan: 50 years Habitat: Rivers, swamps and protected areas Diet: Herbivorous Gestation: About 240 days Predators: Humans, lions, crocodiles The hippopotamus, whose hide alone can weigh half a ton, is the third-largest living land mammal, after elephants and white rhinos. It was considered a female deity of pregnancy in ancient Egypt, but in modern times has been wiped out of that country because of the damage it inflicts on crops. The hippo continues to thrive in other parts of Africa.
The hippo's proportions reflect its sedentary, amphibious existence. Its plump and bulky body is set on short, stumpy legs, with each foot having four toes. Although webbed, the toes splay enough to distribute the weight evenly over each toe and therefore adequately support the hippo on land.

SITE MAP WILDLIFE NEWS WildNet Africa News Archive "Craft and hippos are our diamonds now." (28 April, 1999) Twenty years ago the Caprivi was Namibia's richest wildlife area. Apart from elephant, rhino, hippo, crocodile, wild dog, lion, leopard, cheetah and other predators, it was also the habitat for 22 species of hoofed mammals, including giraffe, eland, roan, sable, buffalo, blue wildebeest, impala and kudu. Today numbers of all these species have decreased while some have disappeared altogether, mostly due to uncontrolled hunting and the loss of habitat. The black rhino, for instance, is now extinct in the Caprivi, while giraffe and wildebeest are no longer found in eastern Caprivi. In the past, wildlife played an important role in indigenous African people's cultural heritage since both wild animals and plants made significant contributions to their traditional economies. This changed during the colonial era when elitist and protectionist nature conservation policies resulted in the alienation of African people from wildlife, while also creating hostility to conservation authorities. Modern education and values, which until recently did not recognise wild animals as a valuable economic resource, also contributed to the general belief that wildlife conservation was in opposition to rural development in communal areas. In spite of this, wildlife based enterprises have become major generators of foreign exchange by annually attracting large numbers of tourists wishing to hunt big game or simply to see wild animals in their natural habitats. Because of past discriminatory legislation the rural people who live with the wild animals on communal land have received little benefit from the booming tourism industry. A Namibian non-governmental organisation, Integrated Rural Development and Nature Conservation, was launched in the late 1980's, first in the Kunene region and later in Caprivi with the specific aim of changing the status quo to the benefit of rural communities.

Nature CBBC Wild ... Help Like this page? Send it to a friend! Hippopotamus There are two species of hippopotamus, the Nile hippopotamus and the much rarer pygmy hippo. Both are found in Africa where they spend most of their time in, or near, the water. In fact, the word 'hippopotamus' means 'river horse' in Greek. As you might guess, the Nile hippopotamus is found along the length of the River Nile. They prefer rivers with deep water and nearby reed beds and grasslands, but are also found in saltwater areas and near river mouths in Central Africa. The hippopotamus has virtually no hair, and its smooth skin is quite delicate and prone to sunburn. But hippos have a built-in sun block. Their skin secretes (produces) a sticky pink liquid to protect them from the sun’s rays, and help stop their skin drying out when they are on land. This is why some people used to think that hippos sweat blood. Hippos have long canine teeth, and if they seem to be yawning they are actually showing off their teeth to frighten rivals or predators. Nile hippos spend most of their day wallowing in water to keep cool. They can weigh up to 4,000 kilogrames (four tonnes), making them the third heaviest land animal in the world. In water their huge bulk is supported, and they are amazingly agile swimmers. At night they venture onto land to feed on grass and fallen fruit. Hippos make excellent lawnmowers! They can crop plants so close to the ground that grass fires are unable to spread over land where they have been grazing.
