WARNINGS AND CONTRAINDICATIONS
Anemia associated with therapy may exacerbate symptoms of coronary disease or deteriorate cardiac function. It is advised that complete blood counts (CBC) be obtained at baseline and at weeks 2 and 4 of therapy or more frequently if clinically indicated.
The most common adverse experiences associated with therapy are "flu-like" symptoms, such as headache, fatigue, myalgia, and fever, which appear to decrease in severity as treatment continues. Severe psychiatric adverse events, including depression, psychoses, aggressive behavior, hallucinations, violent behavior (suicidal ideation, suicidal attempts, suicides), and rare instances of homicidal ideation have occurred during combination REBETOL/INTRON A therapy, both in patients with and without a previous psychiatric disorder.
Combination REBETOL/INTRON A therapy must not be used by women, or male partners of women, who are or may become pregnant during therapy and during the 6 months after stopping therapy. Combination REBETOL/INTRON A therapy should not be initiated until a report of a negative pregnancy test has been obtained immediately prior to initiation of therapy. Women of childbearing potential and men must use effective contraception (two reliable forms) during treatment and during the 6-month posttreatment follow-up period. Significant teratogenic and/or embryocidal effects have been demonstrated for ribavirin in all animal species in which adequate studies have been conducted. These effects occurred at doses as low as one twentieth of the recommended human dose of REBETOL. If pregnancy occurs in a patient or partner of a patient during treatment or during the 6 months after treatment stops, physicians are encouraged to report such cases by calling (800) 727-7064.

Web posted at: 11:20 p.m. EST (CNN) Thousands of children were inoculated against hepatitis A Thursday as federal officials investigated how Mexican-grown strawberries became tainted with the virus, and how many were distributed to retail outlets and restaurants. Students in Michigan, Arizona, California, Georgia, Iowa and Tennessee may have been exposed to the virus when they ate strawberries in school lunches. A L S O Consumer groups demand single food-safety agency Hepatitis proves berry bad for growers About 2,000 children in California and Georgia were inoculated Thursday against hepatitis A. More will get shots on Friday, and health officials in Arizona and Michigan plan inoculation plans of their own. One Los Angeles school served the suspect dessert cups on Monday after it was left off a list of schools warned last Friday. More than 700 kids and teachers at Mount Vernon Middle School will have to get shots next week. In Michigan the CDC confirmed 175 cases of hepatitis linked to the berries.

Two-drug mix better at fighting hepatitis C
November 18, 1998
Web posted at: 11:05 p.m. EST (0405 GMT) WASHINGTON (CNN) Researchers have found a more effective way of treating people with the potentially deadly liver disease hepatitis C, according to research published in this week's New England Journal of Medicine. Two studies found that using two drugs in combination worked better than the standard single medicine, interferon. Until recently, interferon was the only therapy available for patients with chronic hepatitis C. But it was successful in only about 15 percent of patients, and the virus often comes back once treatment is stopped. In July of this year, the Food and Drug Administration approved the drug ribavirin to be used in combination with interferon only for patients suffering relapses in hepatitis C after initial treatment with interferon. The combined drug is being marketed as Rebetol by pharmaceutical maker Schering-Plough, which helped pay for the two studies published in the journal. Research using the two drugs in combination showed a "dramatic improvement in response, about tenfold better" than interferon alone, said the University of Miami's Dr. Eugene Shiff, co-author of one of the two studies.

Price, demand drop for strawberries
April 3, 1997
Web posted at: 11:20 p.m. EST From Correspondent Rusty Dornin SAN FRANCISCO (CNN) News that frozen strawberries from Mexico were contaminated with the Hepatitis A virus may have hexed the U.S. berry market for the rest of the growing season. About 80 percent of the strawberries grown in the United States come from California. And while they may be red, ripe and perfectly safe to eat, fears over contamination won't go away quickly. A L S O Consumer groups demand single food-safety agency Thousands get hepatitis A inoculation (1MB/29 sec. QuickTime movie "The prices have definitely been affected," says Scott Salisbury, a produce broker. "Already, there's been as much as $2 off the wholesale price of berries, and there has been some reluctance to purchase." The hepatitis scare is something of a one-two punch for strawberry farmers. Last year, the fruit was initially blamed for bacterial contamination later found to be caused by raspberries imported from Central America. The fact that the most recent scare involves school lunches, found to be contaminated with frozen strawberries, may have compounded the problem. Produce sellers fear that because kids got sick, parents might be reluctant to buy strawberries this season, period.

Hepatitis C What is hepatitis?
Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver. Inflammation causes soreness and swelling. Hepatitis can be caused by many things. Drinking too much alcohol, abusing drugs and taking some medicines can cause hepatitis. Many viruses can cause hepatitis, too. There are 2 main kinds of hepatitis, acute hepatitis and chronic hepatitis. When a person has hepatitis, the liver may become inflamed very suddenly. This is called acute hepatitis. If you have acute hepatitis, you might have nausea, vomiting, fever and body aches. Or you may not have any symptoms. Most people get over the acute inflammation in a few days or a few weeks. Sometimes, however, the inflammation doesn't go away. When the inflammation doesn't go away, the person has chronic hepatitis. How does hepatitis affect the liver? The liver breaks down waste products in your blood. When the liver is inflamed, it doesn't do a good job of getting rid of waste products. One waste product in the blood, called bilirubin (say "billy-roo-bin"), begins to build up in the blood and tissues when the liver isn't working right. The bilirubin makes the skin of a person with hepatitis turn a yellow-orange color. This is called jaundice (say "john-dis"). Bilirubin and other waste products may also cause itching, nausea, fever and body aches. What is hepatitis C?

Hepatitis B and C What are chronic hepatitis B and chronic hepatitis C?
Hepatitis B and C are similar kinds of liver infection that are caused by viruses. Chronic hepatitis B and C are long-term infections of the liver that develop after a bout of acute hepatitis. How does a person get hepatitis B or C? Hepatitis B or C can be caught in different ways. Hepatitis B and hepatitis C are spread by contact with infected blood or other body fluids of people who have hepatitis B or C infection. For example, you can get hepatitis B and C by having sex with an infected person. People who use intravenous drugs can get hepatitis B or C when they share needles with someone who has the virus. Health care workers, such as nurses, lab technicians and doctors, can get these infections if they are accidentally stuck with a needle that was used on an infected patient. What are the symptoms of acute hepatitis B or C? Symptoms of hepatitis B or C include headache, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, jaundice (the skin turns yellow), weakness and fatigue. Bowel movements may be gray in color. The urine may be dark and look like tea. Sometimes, though, hepatitis is a mild illness. If you have a mild case of hepatitis, you may not even realize that you have it. It may not cause symptoms or may only cause symptoms similar to the stomach flu. You might think you have the flu, and not know you have hepatitis.
