What Does Science Have To Say
About Miracles?
What Is The Purpose Of Free Will
If All Is Foreseen?
These, and countless other questions about creation, space, time, the universe and all things in between were considered long ago by those who understood how to read the Torah at its deepest level of meaning. Those not familiar with these commentaries believe that there is an insurmountable conflict between the Bible and science. But that is not the case. On the contrary. The latest scientific discoveries are in full accord with the Torah. The more science uncovers, the more we find agreement with impossible-sounding statements made centuries and millennia ago on the basis of what the Bible tells us. Learn how our understanding of the universe, based on the twentieth-century science of quantum mechanics, relativity theory and big bang cosmology, compares to predictions made centuries ago from the Bible. How did the early universe get from chaos to order in seeming defiance of the second law of thermodynamics? How is it possible to reconcile a 6000-year time period with one counted in billions of years? Does G-d need to use a time machine to observe all space and time? Why are prominent scientists claiming that the universe is so strange that it really should not and cannot exist? Read this book and find out.

" The Heavenly Time Machine deals with a very big bang. Author Engelson proves harmony between science and Torah, using words small enough for us ordinary mortals to grasp. Faith, of course, does not stem from scientific proofs but from a relationship of trust in the One. But science offers reassuring evidence, which scientist Engelson deftly clarifies. I urge Christians to read this precious gem." Comments by Dr. George Patterson, Adjunct professor of Intercultural Studies, Western Seminary, Portland, Oregon
A Wonderful Book
"I have now read it. Well – it is a wonderful book. Of course, I greatly enjoyed your insights into the relationship between science and Torah. I was especially intrigued by your comments about the Fourier transform containing information from all times. I also enjoyed your comments on quantum mechanics and Torah, and your comparison of computations of the age of the universe. But – I think what I liked best was the enthusiasm and wonder with which you approach the subject. Perhaps it is my bias, but I think that HaShem has created a beautiful world and it is filled with wonders and puzzles. I think you know what I mean." In the beginning
We all know the first English words of the Hebrew Bible: "In the beginning created..."; B'reishis bara , in Hebrew. But it is not that simple. Numerous essays, and even whole books, have been written on the meaning of the first words, or just the first word. For example, the popular commentary by Rabbi Hirsch spends six pages on the first words of the Bible. B'reishis is a compound word which can be understood as "in the beginning of," and not just "in the beginning." Thus Rashi, the eleventh century commentator on the Bible, who always strives for the clearest and simplest meaning, says that the opening statement is, "In the beginning of G-d's creating..." But this word, b'reishis , can be understood in other ways as well. It is a compound word consisting of " be " and "

Thanks to Pythagoras, our numerical ritual can take on new meaning. There is a time each year when our Western society honors in ritualistic form the late great quasi god, Pythagoras. The ritual often begins by forsaking social endeavors, food as nourishment and even sleep. In the time of Pythagoras, this ritual was meant to free up extraneous worries. It initiated purification of the mind for a communal experience with God. But today, it is often felt as complete pan-demonium, relentless searching for tiny scraps of paper that bear witness to the legitimacy of our assertions. Yes, as we begin attending to our annual tax returns, we recognize that it is that time again. Pythagoras was born in 560 B.C. on the Greek Island of Samos. It was rumored in his own time that he was the son of the god Apollo and child of a virgin birth by Pythais. It was said he worked miracles, conversed with manifestations of divine power, taught in parables as well as ascended bodily into the heavens after his death. He was a mystic, a mathematician and a philosopher, yet he was noted first and foremost as a religious figure, a virtual god. We trace his path as he absorbed the best in the West, to the East, to Egypt where he learned their sacred rites and secrets. A decade later, when Persia invaded Egypt, Pythagoras was captured and taken to Babylon. There he was initiated into the mysticism of Zoroastrianism as well as the many mysteries of mathematics. The Babylonians were great mathematicians and Pythagoras learned well. Another ten years lapsed. Pythagoras finally returned to his homeland, Greece, where he brought with him the enigma embodied in mathematics.

Date Posted on Friday, September 22, 2000 2:45:04 PM Twenty students from the Hispanic American Leadership Organization at Garden City Community College have been doing fund-raising and getting ready to attend the U.S. Hispanic Leadership Conference next week in Chicago. HALO president Ana Medrano, who will be attending her second conference, said last year's speakers inspired her to become more involved in the community. "When you go there, you feel like a professional," she said. "I've never been in a place where there are students from all over the country." Medrano, a sophomore majoring in education, said the conference inspires people to success. "That's exactly what they tell you: ?If you want to have success, be around successful people,'" she said. The Salvador native said she's looking forward to hearing this year's speakers, who include a cross section of past, present and future leaders.

Berg's Time John Covach A version of this article originally appeared as "Balzacian Mysticism, Palindromic Design, and Heavenly Time in Alban Berg's Music" in Encrypted Messages in Alban Berg's Music , ed. Siglind Bruhn (New York: Garland, 1998), 5-29. To Glenn Watkins Introduction Turn-of-the-century Vienna was an extraordinary place. As the nineteenth century came to a close, the capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire was home to figures who would in many ways set the intellectual and artistic agenda for the twentieth centuryfigures such as Ludwig Wittgenstein, Adolf Loos, Sigmund Freud, and Gustav Mahler. Allan Janik and Stephen Toulmin have written that this culture "is, or appears at first sight to be, our own twentieth-century culture in its infancy." Karl Kraus, in one of his many caustic moments, chose rather to characterize this same Viennese culture as a "proving ground for world destruction." Over the last three decades or soa time in which this area of inquiry has become a popular research topicscholars writing on the Jahrhundertwende have explored a Vienna rich in coffeehouse debates, concert-hall scandals, political as well as psychological struggles, and Ringstrasse promenades.

"Few of us doubt, gentlemen, that human life on this earth is but a state of probation; which among other things implies, that here below, we mortals have only to do with things provisional. Accordingly, I hold that all our so-called wisdom is likewise but provisional. "This preamble laid down, I begin. "It seems to me, in my visions, that there is a certain most rare order of human souls, which if carefully carried in the body will almost always and everywhere give Heaven's own Truth, with some small grains of variance. For peculiarly coming from God, the sole source of that heavenly truth, and the great Greenwich hill and tower from which the universal meridians are far out into infinity reckoned; such souls seems as London sea-chronometers ( Greek , time-namers) which as the London ship floats past Greenwich down the Thames, are accurately adjusted by Greenwich time, and if heedfully kept, will still give that same time, even though carried to the Azores. True, in nearly all cases of long, remote voyages to China, say chronometers of the best make, and the most carefully treated, will gradually more or less vary from Greenwich time, without the possibility of the error being corrected by direct comparison with their great standard; but skillful and devout observations of the stars by the sextant will serve materially to lessen such errors. And besides, there is such a thing as

The Heavenly Time Machine: Essays on Science and Torah
Author: Morris Engelson
Publisher: Joint Management Strategy
ISBN: 0964287005
Pages: 254
"The Heavenly Time Machine" is a brilliant series of essays on the current state of science and how it relates to the Torah (the first five books of the Hebrew Bible). While often very scientific in nature, the essays are still written with the layman in mind. The author does not give a deep, in-depth discourse on complex scientific theory such as quantum mechanics, matter, space, time, big bang theory, and the mathematics of extremely large numbers, but still explains enough that the reader can understand the point being made.
While normally a very fast reader, I found myself purposely slowing down to make sure that I gained a complete understanding of each chapter. I found myself often stopping to consider a point and contemplate the consequences and logic of the analysis.
Under Newtonian ideas of the universe everything was logical and predictable. This is not the case today. Many experiments have shown that the Newtonian laws break down completely when dealing with atomic and sub-atomic particles. As physics and mathematics have shown the importance of various relationships and the probabilities that they might occur by chance calculated the end conclusion is that the universe required for our existence should not exist and yet it does. Now more and more scientists have come full circle to agreement that the universe was created with us in mind.

The Manufacturing Skill Standards Council, a new coalition of labor and industry, will address increasing demands for occupational skills in the U.S. manufacturing sector. Overseeing manufacturing, installation and repair, the MSSC is the first of 15 industry councils that together will represent 95 percent of the U.S. working population. The effort was launched by the National Skill Standards Board, a congressionally mandated organization formed in 1994. "We're attempting to create a voluntary, business-led set of skill standards for front-line workers, something nobody has ever done before," says James Houghton, NSSB chairman. The MSSC currently consists of 30 people, with an equal number of representatives from business, labor, government and education and community-based organizations. The group's goals include developing a language and standards system common to all stakeholders, codifying performance-based skills standards, and establishing proper assessment procedures and a sector- specific certification system. Reaching these goals will require examining the skill standards already in place. "We're looking at academic employability or work-related skills," declares Edie West, NSSB executive director. Decision making, problem solving, communicating and teamwork all factor into the skill set, she says.

Based On A True Story his film was probably Jackson's most successful film, and can be considered a 'U' turn in his filmography. He moves away from his usual genre of splatter-fest horrors, and takes on a dramatic, factual account of a murder trial. It's a story of teenage angst, friendship, obsession and murder. Peter Jackson's fourth film was made in 1994 on a budget of $5 million, which was the largest sum of money, that he had available to use on any film at the time. eavenly Creatures is based on a true story that happened in Christchurch in the1950's. The case shocked the world, and was the O.J. Simpson trial of its day. The script was written partially because of his wife's curiosity surrounding the Parker-Hulme case, and involved a year of extensive research. He interviewed many people involved or related to the case to find out what exactly happened, but it is important to note that he had no contact with Juliet Hulme or Pauline Parker (Rieper). ackson's perfectionist attitude drove him to film at all of the authentic locations (except the Rieper home, which had been demolished). He ensures the accuracy of most of the events and dialogue by pulling information directly out of Pauline's diary (the diary entries in the form of voice-overs were genuine).
