FROM NEURONS TO NEIGHBORHOODS (N2N2):
New ways to prevent and repair emotional trauma in children and adults
Second Annual L. A. Community Conference,
May 17th and 18th 2003
Two years ago the National Academy of Sciences published a major compendium of research on the science of early child development entitled From Neurons to Neighborhoods. The report combines research and information from such diverse fields as neuroscience, biology, early child development, neurochemistry and biochemistry. This research links both cause and cure of common learning, mental, emotional, and social problems to traumatic events caused by interpersonal experiences that influence the brain. Emotional trauma is defined not only by easily identified shocking incidents but a series of persistent low intensity experiences that result in miss-attunement, confusion and isolation. The report concluded:
  • Social experience shapes the biology and the development of the brain throughout life. Interpersonal processes are the cornerstones of early childhood development.

W hat we eat where it comes from, how it is raised, processed, cooked affects our health in many ways. Traditional native diets in those few places in the world where people still mostly eat what they raise, hunt, gather, fish have been found to promote health and long life, for reasons only gradually coming to be understood. I t isn't practical to recommend now for most of us that we eat buffalo, harvest wild rice, farm corn in single hills, gather waupatoo or teepsinna. We'll see why those traditional foods are health-promoting as modern biological and medical sciences have belatedly learned. We'll see practical ways to improve health by food and diet starting when you are young to eat well to avoid health problems later. Cultural food stories and practical recipes are here too. InfoSeek Select Site for this Traditional Foods section. InfoSeek also selected First Nations, Canadian Native and Inuit as worth checking out. It's always nice to be appreciated. I really put in a lot of work on this section the recipes take quite a while to type and index-link. I have lots of fun with this food section. But I think it's appropriate to point out at the start of info for fun (good eating) and health that some Native people youth and elders especially are going to be affected to the point of malnutrition, hunger, and serious health problems due to the political direction the U.S. is taking. Here's a couple of brief statements from Native leaders about that. I hope you will take the time to read and think about them, if you are not Indian, but just interested in our culture or our foods and recipes. Indian people (U.S.) already know, and are worrying.

The Global Volunteer Network currently has volunteer opportunities available through our partner organization in the beautiful Kingdom of Nepal. Volunteers have the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational and community aid programs. This will give you a chance to make an important contribution to the people of Nepal and while doing so gain an in depth experience of the country and its culture, that will stay with you the rest of your life.
:: The Program
The volunteer opportunities are in areas such as Teaching English, Environmental Awareness, Health and Sanitation issues/Primary Health Care and a Home Stay Programme/Cultural Exchange. Your placement will be tailored according to your individual needs and interests.
Teaching English
Volunteers will be provided with training about how to teach in Nepal. The system of teaching is different in Nepal so volunteers will be taught their teaching methodology. Volunteers will stay with a Nepali family near the school. Volunteers will teach for about 2 to 3 hours each day for six days a week (Saturday is the day off). They will also be involved in teaching in youth clubs or a women's group for informal education for 1 to 2 hours a day. School children will be 10 to 14 years of age and have basic level of English. Volunteers for this program will also be engaged to let the teachers of the school know about teaching practices and conversational English to enable them to teach English in the future.

How to Talk about HIV
in Spanish

"It is our responsibility to educate our young. The need is critical. The lives of our young people depend on our fulfilling our responsibility."
C. Everett Koop, MD
Former Surgeon General of Public Health of the United States
HIV/AIDS is an epidemic that can be as frightening as it is deadly. As parents we need to know the most current information on HIV and how it is spread. Then we need to teach our teens and children how to protect themselves. The National PTA believes that teens and children must be educated about HIV/AIDS. The spread of HIV can and must be stopped. The only way to prevent HIV/AIDS is through education. This brochure provides basic information, but it may not answer all your questions. For more information, see the resources at the end of this brochure, or contact the National PTA for an HIV/AIDS resource list.
