Hayes' motto in his campaign? The Answer: We couldn't find the motto or slogan of his campaign for president during the election of 1876. But we thought maybe you were looking for Hayes' best known quotation, which was taken from his inaugural address in 1877. "He serves his party best who serves his country best." Rutherford Birchard Hayes (1822-1893) , the country's 19th president, is generally considered a president who did both. He was a dignified member of the Republican Party who believed that a president should not run for more than one term, and he was a Civil War veteran who was wounded four times. After being involved in the most fiercely disputed election in American history , Hayes' term as president was highlighted by his successes in bringing together divided Southern states after the Civil War and pushing reform of civil service.

RUTHERFORD B. HAYES 19th President of the United States Rutherford B. Hayes was an Ohio lawyer who was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives while still on active duty in the Civil War. He served three terms as Governor of Ohio, then received the Republican nomination in the presidential race of 1876. Although his opponent, Democrat Samuel J. Tilden, received a plurality of the popular vote, the electoral votes from four states were in dispute. A special congressional commission gave the election to Hayes just three days before his inauguration. In turn, President Hayes removed Federal troops from the South. After his term expired, he did not seek re-election. He was succeeded by James Garfield

Rutherford B. Hayes, 1822-1893
Rutherford B. Hayes, the 19th president of the United States, was elected to office by a 1-vote margin after a contest of counted votes in Florida, Louisiana and South Carolina in the election of 1876. The results of the Hayes-Tilden election were unsettled for months as a committee determined a victory for Hayes, who as president ended 10 years of Union Army occupation of the South and terminated Reconstruction. Rutherford B. Hayes, the first president to own a telephone and founder of the annual White House Easter Egg hunt died January 17th 1893 at the age of 70. Born on October 4th, 1822 2 months after the death of his father, Rutherford Birchard Hayes was raised by his mother, Sophia Birchard Hayes and the financial support of her brother, Sardis Birchard. The youngest of the widow Hayes 5 children, her brother financed an excellent education for Rutherford, who attended Norwalk Academy of Ohio, a preparatory school in Middletown, Connecticut and Kenyon College at Gambier, Ohio where he graduated as valedictorian in 1842. After working for a year in a Columbus law firm, Hayes left Ohio to attend Harvard Law School, passing the bar in 1845 and eventually establishing his own practice in Cincinnati. Hayes initially pursued law as a passionless means of supporting himself and his cultural pursuits. Hayes was an avid attendant of plays, symphonies, lectures and took many travel tours of Canada and the United States. He sponsored readings by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow at his literary club, and joined several lodges, including the Odd Fellows and the Sons of Temperance. His views on the law were gradually influenced by his fiancee

    President Rutherford Birchard Hayes
Served 1877- 1881 Rutherford Birchard Hayes was born October 4, 1822, in Delaware, Ohio. Hayes married Lucy Webb December 30, 1852, and together, they had eight children. Hayes was a congressman and Governor of Ohio before becoming a "dark horse" Republican candidate for President in 1876. Running against Democrat Samuel J. Tilden, Hayes lost the popular vote but won the Presidency by one vote in the Electoral College, the closest Presidential election in history except in 1824, when John Quincy Adams received fewer electoral votes than his opponent but was elected in the House of Representatives, and in 2000, when George W. Bush narrowly won over over Albert Gore. Some people accused Hayes of "stealing" the election, but he turned out to be so honest and hardworking that both his own party and the Democrats respected him. His Vice President was William A. Wheeler. The period between the end of the Civil War in 1865 and 1877, when Hayes took office, was known as the Reconstruction Era. Northern troops stationed in the former Confederate states kept a close eye on the South as it rebuilt. There were many hard feelings, and Hayes promised to remove the last of the Union troops, which he did shortly after he become President. Hayes was the first President to visit the West Coast, taking the train all the way across the country. He was also the first President to have a telephone in the White House. While Hayes was President, Thomas Edison invented the electric light bulb and the phonograph.

    President, 1797-1801
The entrance exam to Harvard in 1751 was rigorous and proved a frightening prospect to many an applicant. The young John Adams was no exception. After mounting his horse and starting the ride from nearby Braintree to Cambridge, Adams experienced sensations familiar to almost all of us. He was so "terrified at the Thought of introducing myself to such great Men as the President and fellows of a Colledge, I at first resolved to return home: but forseeing the Grief of my father . . . I aroused my self, and collected Resolution enough to proceed." Though grueling, the experience ended happily, and Adams "was as light when I came home as I had been heavy when I went." Soon after entering the school, Adams fell in love with learning, to the point where he might today be considered not quite well-rounded: "I perceived a growing Curiosity, a Love of Books and a fondness for Study, which dissipated all my inclination for Sports, and even the Society of the Ladies. I read forever . . .'' Before 1773, the graduates of Harvard were arranged in a hierarchy not of merit but "according to the dignity of birth, or to the rank of [their] parents." By this rather undemocratic standard, Adams graduated 14th in a class of 24.
