Prohibition, a legal ban on the manufacture, sale and transportation of alcohol was adopted on a national level with the ratification of the 18th amendment to the US Constitution, January 16, 1919. It became law one year later, as per the conditions of the amendment. Prohibition was repealed by adoption of the 21st amendment on December 5, 1933.
HARDING, WARREN G. (1865-1923)
Warren Harding was the 29th president of the United States. He was inaugurated on March 4, 1921. Harding's administration was riddled with scandals. The conduct of several of his cabinet members brought considerable criticism against the president and the Republican party. The "Teapot Dome Affair" was perhaps the most important scandal of Harding's administration. After jurisdiction over naval oil reserves were transferred to the Department of the Interior, secretary Albert B. Fall leased Teapot Dome to oil interests in exchange for a bribe. He eventually spent time in a federal prison because of his actions. The incident also resulted in the resignation of Secretary of Navy Edwin N. Denby, who had consented to the transfer of the reserves. Attorney General Daugherty was charged with receiving payments from prohibition violators, and was forced to resign by Calvin Coolidge (Harding's successor).

Warren G. Harding Before his nomination, Warren G. Harding declared, "America's present need is not heroics, but healing; not nostrums, but normalcy; not revolution, but restoration; not agitation, but adjustment; not surgery, but serenity; not the dramatic, but the dispassionate; not experiment, but equipoise; not submergence in internationality, but sustainment in triumphant nationality...." A Democratic leader, William Gibbs McAdoo, called Harding's speeches "an army of pompous phrases moving across the landscape in search of an idea." Their very murkiness was effective, since Harding's pronouncements remained unclear on the League of Nations, in contrast to the impassioned crusade of the Democratic candidates, Governor James M. Cox of Ohio and Franklin D. Roosevelt. Thirty-one distinguished Republicans had signed a manifesto assuring voters that a vote for Harding was a vote for the League. But Harding interpreted his election as a mandate to stay out of the League of Nations.

WARREN HARDING 29th U.S. President One can almost feel sorry for Harding, who consistently gets ranked as one of the worst presidents of all time. A former newspaperman and senator from Ohio, Harding was ill-suited to the presidency but was chosen as a compromise candidate on the 10th ballot of the 1920 Republican convention. His administration is chiefly remembered for the Teapot Dome scandal, a messy tale of bribery, fraud, and federal oil reserves. Harding died suddenly in San Francisco during a 1923 cross-country tour and was succeeded by his vice president, Calvin Coolidge
Extra credit : Harding rode an automobile to his inauguration, the first president ever to do so.

Notorious SF: Warren G. Harding If 29th President of the United States Warren G. Harding had lived long enough he may have liked San Francisco. With his penchant for poker and cronyism, the Ohio Republican who was elected by a wide margin in 1920 may have fit right in. Did I say Ohio Republican? Scratch the invitation. Harding died at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco on August 23, 1923 under circumstances that began as mysterious and were then varnished by rumor in the aftermath of scandals and salacious revelations that surfaced following the president's demise. The ailing president arrived in San Francisco and to the Palace Hotel where he died either of anxiety, a stroke, a heart attack, food poisoning, or from deliberate poisoning by First Lady Florence, fed up with her husband's philandering. The legend continues that Mrs. Harding's psychic had, on the eve of his nomination, predicted the president would die in office. The fact that Mrs. Harding refused to allow an autopsy of the president contributed to suspicion of her. A book was published in 1930 that detailed the case against the First Lady. The official cause of President Harding's death is listed as a stroke. In a contemporary book, The Strange Deaths of President Harding, historian Robert H. Ferrell lays out the facts behind these allegations and makes the following conclusions: It was a heart attack that caused Harding's death, not poison. Harding did not know much about the scandals looming in Washington D.C. at the time of his death. There is no proof of an illegitimate child, the existence of which has been said to have driven Florence to the crime. Ferrell asks for a reexamination of Harding's place in American history.

Did he die of a heart attack or stroke? Was he wiped out by the Mob? We believe the US Government did a "1-2 elimination." The question remains: Did he die at his own hand, a heart attack (on record), the hand of his wife or from a mysterious government conspiracy because of his BLACKNESS? Government conspiracies were not uncovered in the 1920’s by the press. Televisions, computers and sophisticated research activities to “hype or sensationalize” a report or story had not been invented. Warren's Death Warrant: Blackness Warren G. She explained...."He could only find work as a teacher in a ‘Colored School’ in Ohio in 1884until he crossed the color line."

Harding addressed the American people in 1921 in giving his inauguration speech. Warren G. Harding - Inaugural Speech My Countrymen:
WHEN one surveys the world about him after the great storm, noting the marks of destruction and yet rejoicing in the ruggedness of the things which withstood it, if he is an American he breathes the clarified atmosphere with a strange mingling of regret and new hope. We have seen a world passion spend its fury, but we contemplate our Republic unshaken, and hold our civilization secure. Liberty—liberty within the law—and civilization are inseparable, and though both were threatened we find them now secure; and there comes to Americans the profound assurance that our representative government is the highest expression and surest guaranty of both.
The recorded progress of our Republic, materially and spiritually, in itself proves the wisdom of the inherited policy of noninvolvement in Old World affairs. Confident of our ability to work out our own destiny, and jealously guarding our right to do so, we seek no part in directing the destinies of the Old World. We do not mean to be entangled. We will accept no responsibility except as our own conscience and judgment, in each instance, may determine.
Our eyes never will be blind to a developing menace, our ears never deaf to the call of civilization. We recognize the new order in the world, with the closer contacts which progress has wrought. We sense the call of the human heart for fellowship, fraternity, and cooperation. We crave friendship and harbor no hate. But America, our America, the America builded on the foundation laid by the inspired fathers, can be a party to no permanent military alliance. It can enter into no political commitments, nor assume any economic obligations which will subject our decisions to any other than our own authority.
