    Grenada Summer Program
introduction island overview academic program description general info ... How do I apply? Grenada study abroad Application Form APPLICATIONS FOR SUMMER 2003 PROGRAM DUE MARCH 3, 2003 APPLICATIONS DEADLINE HAS PASSED Tentative Program Dates: May 27th - July 13th Introduction:
Warm, gentle tradewinds rustle palm fronds above a sugary white sand beach lining a turquoise sea. Brightly colored sailboats splash across picture-perfect bays; the scent of tropical fruits fills the air along with the bouncing rhythms of reggae and calypso music. To most people, these cliché tourism industry advertising images are what the Caribbean is all about. Most visits made to the Caribbean by outsiders are spent either on cruise ships or in the artificial environments of all-inclusive hotels. This study abroad program is about learning how to see a different Caribbean, and gives HSU students an opportunity to live and study in a unique region of the world. The entire program will take place in the small Eastern Caribbean nation of Grenada (located 90 miles north of South America).

The islands are geographically divided into "inner" and "outer" chains. The inner islands are volcanic in origin, and are characterized by rugged, mountainous terrain, heavy rainfall and lush vegetation. The high points of these islands are generally in the center, except for a few spectacular sheer slopes on some coastlines. High points of elevation vary from 1,000 to 5,000 feet. The outer islands have a coral limestone base and are relatively flat and less rainy than the inner islands.
Dominica is the largest and most northerly of the Windward islands. It lies between Guadeloupe to the north and Martinique to the south. Its terrain is rugged and mountainous with considerable annual rainfall and extensive rainforest.
St. Lucia is 27 miles long and 14 miles wide. It lies between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean and is situated to the south of Martinique and the north of St. Vincent. It is a volcanic and mountainous island whose highest peak is Morne Gimie (3,145ft).
Antigua's 108 square miles (280 sq. km) are mainly coral based and low lying, but the south is particularly fertile, with undulating hills of volcanic origin. The highest point (1,319 feet, 405 m) is at Boggy Peak. The coastline is deeply indented and provides many natural harbors.

    Is There Racism in Grenada?
Introduction Of course there is . . . and because discussions of racism are so touchy this is an opinionated essay by Ann Wilder. And, I suggest, and this is a very important suggestion, that race does not exist except as a figment of political reality. Needless to say, a discussion of race compels us to proceed. People continue to group others into their own preconception. Acknowledgements Acknowledged: Leaps and bounds of improvement concerning the lessening of overt racism in Grenada over time and a 98+ percentage of Blacks in the population [using the US predominant one-drop theory of blackness] exist today. Acknowledged: When talking about race, be aware that a person may be discussing ethnicity, culture, colour, gender and/or class. Gairy and Black Power Gairy's speech occurred after the February-April 1970 'February Movement' in Trinidad with its line of continuity extending from the US Black Power Movement. At the same time, according to Tafari, "For [Walter] Rodney—as for [the Oilfield Workers Trade Union] OWTU and to a lesser extent, [National Joint Action Committee] NJAC—the notion of 'black' actually corresponded more broadly to 'non-white,' and hence embraced both East Indian and African workers and peasants, whose common interests sprung from the fact of being dispossessed classes." Eric Mathew Gairy unwittingly made a huge difference in relation to Black Power; i.e. his example was a fact of the power of blacks and the working class, but it was not the consciousness of the Black Power Movement. And that made the difference.
