MQTL and NQTL: Software for interval mapping of QTL
MQTL (for DOS or UNIX) and NQTL (for MS Windows95 and beyond) read data for marker genotypes and quantitative trait phenotypes of homozygous lines from a biparental cross. Phenotypic data may represent observations from many different environments. Two types of analysis are performed: simple interval mapping and a simplified form of composite interval mapping. In each type of mapping, tests are performed for the presence of main effects and QTL-by-environment interaction. MQTL can also perform permutation tests to establish thresholds for control of type I error rate. MQTL and NQTL can be downloaded by ftp from gnome.agrenv.mcgill.ca/software/MQTL

Advice on Forage Grain Crops
Proceedings of Field Event at Kilmacow, Co Kilkenny
Wednesday, 17 July, 2002
Introduction
Feed costs are a major cost in producing beef or milk. Alternative feed sources may provide opportunities to reduce feed costs and thereby increase income. Decisions to alter feeding programmes cannot be based on unit feed costs alone as there are opportunity costs associated with land, premia and labour. Risk and extra management time required are also factors which will influence the uptake of alternative feed production systems. Grass silage has been the main stay of winter feeding systems for many years and will continue to be so. However, the competitiveness of grass and grass silage is of major importance to Irish producers. Grass silage in particular is not without its limitations in terms of consistency of quality, cost of production and availability of contractors. It also suffers from high dependence on weather for harvesting and for growing conditions. There is an increased range of alternative forages and feeds available to farmers. Improvements in breeding technology, systems and practices in this area have helped the expansion of alternatives to grass silage.

Identity Preservation of Grain Crops
Some grain customers are now willing to pay premiums for grains that have special characteristics (for example high-oil corn or organically produced crops), and in other cases, some grain customers are unwilling to accept grain that has certain characteristics (for example, genetically modified crops). In order to meet customer demands, farmers and other grain handlers must be able to keep these special crops separate from other crops and they must be able to prove that they have maintained separation (identity preservation, or IP). Develop and instill the proper attitude . Most of us (this includes owners, managers, and hired labor) aren't used to practicing identity preservation and paying so much attention to the needs of specific customers. We need to keep reminding our employees and ourselves that this is important and that customer satisfaction and premiums are at stake. Although auditing and testing are used in most programs to make sure that identity has been preserved, the fact is that honesty and trust are still important parts of most IP programs. Violation of that trust is likely to result in loss of customer confidence, premium prices, and future opportunities. Know what's in the contract!

Introduction
Soil fertility is an important aspect of irrigated crop production. On nutrient deficient soils, applying fertilizer increases yields and improves crop quality. To achieve optimum crop yields, producers should use soil tests to develop an economical and environmentally responsible soil fertility program. It is necessary to understand how the amount and availability of soil nutrients can limit crop growth before management practice are changed to improve crop production. This factsheet contains fertilizer recommendations for irrigated small grain and oilseed crops based on field research conducted by the Soil and Crop Management Branch of Alberta Agriculture, Food and Rural Development.

Identity Preservation (IP) of Grain Crops
Some grain customers are willing to pay premium prices for grains that have special characteristics (for example, food-grade corn or soybeans, or organically produced crops), and in other cases, some customers are unwilling to accept grain that has certain traits (for example, genetically modified crops). In order to meet the demands of these customers, farmers and other grain handlers must be able to keep special crops separate and free from contamination by other crops, and prove that they have maintained separation (identity preservation, or IP). Here are some approaches and considerations that might be useful in an IP program. Develop a customer-service attitude. Most farmers and other grain managers aren't used to practicing identity preservation and paying so much attention to the needs of specific customers. It's important to keep reminding yourself and your employees that identity preservation is critical for customer satisfaction and that premium prices could be at stake. Although auditing and testing are used in most programs to make sure that crop identity has been preserved, the fact is that honesty and trust are still important parts of most IP programs. Violation of that trust is likely to result in loss of customer confidence, premium prices, and future marketing opportunities. Know what's in the contract!

Russia to boost grain crops by 30-40m tons a year
Grain crops may grow by 30-40m tons up to 100-110m tons a year, while grain exports may total 20m tons, Deputy Prime Minister and Agriculture Minister Alexey Gordeyev said at a press conference today. The Agriculture Minister was quoted as saying grain crops of the past two years can hardly be viewed as a long-standing trend but the government is planning to cement the growth of grain production in Russia. In view of this, the Deputy Prime Minister reported that in 2003 the stimulation of the emerging infrastructure for grain production and exports would start. In particular, the government is planning to provide credits for the construction of grain elevators.
Gordeyev also pointed out until recently 20m hectares of land had been underused in Russia, which may become a reserve for the further output growth. According to the Agriculture Minister, grain production and exports may become "a substantial contribution to the state budget, since they are reproducible resources, unlike oil or gas".
As it was reported earlier, in 2002 Russian grain crops were 86.7m tons, while Russia's grain exports in 2002-2003 are expected to total $10-12m tons.
