Home Department Overview Degree Requirements Courses ... Links In 1999 the Department of Geology acquired a Noran (Tracor) Scanning Electron Microscope which allows high resolution imaging and elemental micro-analysis. A number of students and faculty make use of this instrument for both in-class and independent research projects. Several students are currently involved in research projects investigating the morphology of modern and fossil foraminifera from around the world. The SEM is also used for geologic studies of meteorites and microspherules. The department has a Phillips X-Ray Diffractometer that is currently being used to identify minerals in sediment and core samples for a variety of ongoing research projects. Current projects include identification of clay minerals in cores drilled by USGS throughout the Low Country, and identification of minerals present in dredge disposal sites along the Cooper River. The department has geochemistry lab, for the analysis of water and soils from pristine and contaminated environments. The instrumentation available in this includes a Jobin-Yvon 38S ICP-AES (inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometer) for the analysis of cations and metals. a Hewlett-Packard Capillary Electrophoresis Unit, Tekmar - Dohrman Total Organic Carbon Analyzer, and St. Johns Assoc. Amino Acid Analyzer. Current student research includes analysis of nutrients in ground and surface waters, and analysis and mapping of metals in contaminated soils.

Structural geology and Tectonics
Research in structural geology at Leeds links between geoscience disciplines and spans all scales, from the interactions of lithospheric plates at mountain ranges to intracrystalline processes. Some of our research is strongly applied, investigating the structural geology of hydrocarbon provinces and ore bodies. We are interested in answering key questions: how do shear zones become weak enough to move and what are their seismological characteristics; what localises deformation in the continental crust; how fast do structures develop and how are they organised across orogenic belts, plate boundaries and basins; what are the mechanisms by which deep crustal rocks are brought to the earth's surface; how do structures control fluid flow in petroleum reservoirs, orogenic belts and associated with ore genesis. The structure group at Leeds has an international flavour with overseas and UK research students. Some projects link with Rock Deformation Research, the School's commercial company dealing with applied research for the hydrocarbons and minerals industries. Training in Leeds will be provided in all necessary methods, such as field mapping, balanced section construction, microchemical and microstructural analysis. All of our projects provide an excellent foundation and training for a career in academia or commercial geoscience.

ANCESTRAL YUBA RIVER FLUVIAL DEPOSITS
NORTHERN SIERRA NEVADA REGION, CALIFORNIA Field investigations pursue biostratigraphic, geologic, and paleontologic studies of Early Tertiary fluvial sediments considered equivalent to the Ione Formation in the northern Sierra Nevada Region, California. The principal investigators propose to extend the project area to include the western Nevada region. Field research activities to date have involved discovery of over 60 important paleobotanical sites within the Tertiary Ancestral Yuba sediments on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) lands within the Folsom District, California. The FWGF conducts several research field trips per year to newly discovered sites which are particularly scientifically significant to the research program. Numerous specimens retrieved from these sediments have been deposited in University of California Museum of Paleontology (UCMP) collections since 1975.

Student Research in Geology Click on the image to the right for a larger version. The Geology Department faculty are all engaged in active research, much of which is funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), including Research Experiences for Undergraduates ( REU ) funded projects. This provides many opportunities for student participation in research during the summer and school year. Research projects vary with student interest and funding, however recent projects have included research in experimental petrology paleontology , geomorphology, hydrogeology, and glacial geology Students are encouraged to complete a senior research project in conjunction with the courses Introduction to Research (GL450) and Senior Research (GL451). Successful completion of GL451 requires a written senior thesis and public presentation of results.
Summaries of Student Research Students can now earn a departmental distinction upon successful completion of both a superior senior research thesis, GL 451 (Senior Research), and the geology degree with a GPA 3.5 for all geology courses and the supporting science and mathematics courses that are required for the major. Marine Geology and Geophysics Cluster Group The marine geology and geophysics cluster group comprises a diverse group of earth scientists interested in the physics, chemistry, and geological evolution of materials forming the seafloor. While this research varies greatly in purpose, setting and methods, there are some common themes. Fisher, Silver, Gill, and Moore are interested in the nature and influence of fluid flow through earth's crust below the oceans, from hydrothermal circulation where the crust is young, to tectonically-induced flows where old seafloor is destroyed at oceanic trenches. Gill, Griggs, Silver, and Moore all study deformation of geological materials in places where the geology is dynamic, where the crust is being changed (squeezed, uplifted, subducted, or worn away) by tectonic and shoreline processes. Dr. L. MICHAEL TRAPASSO is an Applied Climatologist who deals with weather and climate as it affects society in general. In recent years his research interests have focused upon the field of Human Biometeorology/ Climatology . This is a subfield of Applied Climatology that deals with weather and climate as it influences the human body. Through time his publications have concerned such diverse topics as human childbirth, athletic performance, traffic accidents, heart attacks, asthma, migraine headaches, and human perception of the environment, to mention a few. On a grander scale, his work addresses the human impact of larger environmental issues such as water conservation, tropical deforestation, climatic change, and ozone depletion. His research philosophy is quite basic and simple: any way in which the atmosphere impresses human life is wide open for investigation. General Information The Geology Department is one of the oldest in the country. Ever since its inception in 1898, it has been imparting professional knowledge in Earth Sciences and been an active centre of research in several branches. The Department has been successively headed by celebrated scientists and teamed by highly devoted and dedicated teachers. They have not only championed the exposition and propagation of geological education, but also have been pioneers in the cause of basic research in various problems in Geology. During the early years professors in the department also functioned as Directors of the State Geological Department and vice versa. With this combination of field, laboratory and class room experience, a substantial progress was made in understanding the geology of the State during this period.   • A World of Plants
    : overview of botanical studies in Sonora, Mexico
  • Flowers in the Desert : overview of studies of wild and cultivated plants in the Sonoran region
  • Performance of Xerophytes in Cultivation. The compilation of a database of plants for desert landscapes with information on growing season, flowers, habitat, pollinators, and palatability to herbivores. Contains over 2100 taxa. Principal Investigator: Mark Dimmitt.
  • Phenology of Wild And Cultivated Plants in the Tucson Mountains. The vegetative and flowering cycles of more than 200 plant taxa have been recorded over the past two decades in order to determine their seasonality. Rather little is known about the specific triggers to leafing and flowering of desert plants. It is widely assumed from empirical observations that most are opportunistic and respond primarily to rain, but statistical analysis shows a number of unexpected differences and complexities. Horticulturists can use these data to plan seasonal flower displays in desert climates. Scientists can use the phenology and weather data to search for the triggers of phenological events. Thesis projects can have field, laboratory, and modeling components and explore aspects of geomorphology, surficial processes, active tectonics, glacial geology, paleoclimatology, environmental geology, digital terrain analysis and GIS, or cosmogenic nuclide exposure methods. Additionally, undergraduate students are encouraged to participate in graduate and staff research projects as field and laboratory assistants.
