I also routinely review proposals for NSF, ACS-PRF, the Canadian Research Council, and NERC. In addition I review manuscripts for a range of national and international journals, including Geology, Journal of sedimentary Petrology, Journal of Sedimentary Research, Sedimentology, Sedimentary Geology, Marine Geology, GSA Bulletin, Chemical Geology, Lithos, Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta, Palaios, and the Journal of the Texas Society for Electron Microscopy.

    This research group is has been active for a number of years! In a nutshell this is who we are and what we do. Six members of staff, bringing combined strengths in basin analysis, seismic stratigraphy, marine and petroleum geology of the Irish Offshore Basins. Closely affiliated research groups within the Department of Geology, University College Dublin provide expertise in isotope geochemistry, palaeoclimatology, fault analysis and geophysics.     This information source is currently under construction. Watch for our improvements! Faculty, staff, and students in Department of Geological Sciences at CSULB are engaged in a variety of Earth science research projects, many of them centered in the western United States. We are fortunate to have strong equipment holdings, particularly in exploration geophysics and organic geochemistry, that allow department personnel to pursue cutting-edge research. We are actively collaborating with colleagues at the United States Geological Survey, California Institute of Technology, California State University at Northridge, Irvine Valley College, Long Beach City College, California State University at Fullerton, San Diego State University, University of Southern California, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and several others.
    We have fun learning about the Earth together.

    In 1995, the Department of Geological Sciences, with funding from the National Science Foundation and the generous support of the College of Natural Sciences and the University, began construction on a NEW geochemistry laboratory. This facility is due to be completed by the fall of 1996.

    Since early accounts in the mid 1800's a great deal has been published on the geology of northern Orissa. Much of this modern work is summarised in regional reviews such as Naqvi and Rogers (1987), Banerji (1990), Saha (1994), Mohanty et al. (1995) and Mahalik (1996). Northern Orissa covers a tectonically complex region where the granulite facies Eastern Ghats Province terminates against the granite-volcanosedimentary Singhbhum Province and bound to the West by the granite-gneiss Bhandara Province. The northern contact of the Eastern Ghats Province with the Singhbhum Province and the NE part of the Bhandara Province represents a significant but poorly understood WNW-ESE trending tectonic margin. The complexity of the contact between these Provinces became evident with the recognition of distinct lithological associations between the Singhbhum and Eastern Ghats Provinces (Banerji et al. 1987, Mahalik 1994, Nash et al. 1996). These lithological associations are collectively defined as the Rengali Province. It is apparent that there has been a widespread high-grade Grenvillian metamorphic event and only recently have Neoproterozoic and early Paleozoic thermal events been shown to have widely affected the high grade Eastern Ghats Province (Takigami et al. 1995, Kovach et al. 1997, Shaw et al. 1997).

    Project Description
    Back-reef lagoons constitute fragile environments with diverse biota. The back-reef lagoon is defined as the area between the mainland and a fringing or barrier reef structure, and hence acts as a bridge for interaction between the mainland and the coral reef. The sheltering effects of the reef provide areas of high recreation value including ecotourism, diving, boating, and fishing, and more importantly they are areas that have high conservation value, being a vital component of the reef system. From a geological perspective, back-reef lagoons are sites of production and accumulation of vast deposits of carbonate sediment. An understanding of sediment distribution patterns within the lagoon provides insights into the long term hydrodynamics of the reef system and a means by which to model the shape and structure of fossil reef systems and processes. There has been very little published research on the Ningaloo Reef and none concerning sediment distributions and sedimentary processes. In 1997 I completed an honours degree in geology looking at sediment distribution patterns in the Batemen Bay back-reef lagoon, within Ningaloo Reef. My research efforts concentrated on analyses of foraminiferal compositions, grain-size characteristics and geomorphology of the back-reef lagoon. In June 1998 I commenced my PhD as a part time student. The Bateman Bay work is being extended by more detailed study and by examination of other back-reef areas along the Ningaloo Reef tract.

    Shales and mudstones are very fine grained terrigenous clastic sedimentary rocks, and they constitute approximately two-thirds of all sediments on earth. Even though a major share of the earth's sedimentary record and thus its history is recorded in them, shales and mudstones have been studied very little because of their fine grain size. Recent research has demonstrated that a lot of valuable information can be extracted from shales and mudstones, pertaining to ancient environments, climates, ocean circulation, and the history of life.
    Further studies will be beneficial to the solution of engineering problems associated with ground movements in the construction of roads and houses as these are often linked to underlying shale and mudstone formations. Also, shales and mudstones are the primary source of hydrocarbons, and better understanding of these materials, their composition, and the forces that bind them may be helpful in the search for energy resources for the future
